I did my first Game Boy modification in 2012. Things have changed a lot since then!
In this video I am revisiting a few of my older Game Boy builds and explaining the many weird and wonderful alterations I made to the consoles and how they form part of an evolution towards the incredible upgrades possible today.

I think the fact that the Game Boy Color has an OLED screen available for it is the great illustration of how far we've come

Can't take credit for the idea but it definitely isn't as common as it used to be, so definitely worth passing on to people who haven't heard of it before!

I first found out about modding gameboys when I saw the band powerlifter in like 2012. They used a DMG that looked a lot like the ones you showed in the beginning and I've always wanted to build one myself but haven't had the skills. Awesome video, thanks for showing these.

Such a great trip down memory lane! I think I actually remember seeing you post that clear DMG with the teal paint on the inside when you originally made it... I sortof regret selling a lot of my earlier mods. I made what I believe to be the first and possibly only DMG with TWO 1/4" jacks in it, which I traded to KeFF in exchange for the art for one of my albums. I reached out recently to see if I could buy it back and he had JUST sold it to someone else.

I love this so much! It's giving me nostalgia, bringing me back to the days when the AGB was new and the SP wasn't out yet. In the states we had something called an After Burner kit, that would install a light (I can't recall if it was front or back lit). I recall people paying top dollar for the mod. Thankfully I was able to wait for the SP. Still I just love these older mods because they required skill. When I did my first bivert I was so pleased with myself haha 😂

Yessss you're right! I had forgotten about the afterburner kit. That was my first game boy mod in that case, and what a tricky job it was

Other than aesthetic mods, have you dabble in speed up mods? Would be great if someone on youtube did a PSA on speed up mods. Its just changing the crystal value on the motherboard. You could make it complicated (using arduino mcu to switch using combination button presses) or easy (a simple toggle switch) .

One thing I've never dabbled with is the clock speed. I'd meant to on many occasions but never got my hands on the parts!

@@JoeBleeps Actually you don't need to buy already made parts like gbaccelerator or clockxcontrol to do this simple mod. You can solder crystal oscillators in parallel with the onboard crystal which costs $1 for a pack of 10. There's a decade old japanese website that has detailed schematics. Too bad I can't link them here as youtube will delete the comment.

@@jackipiegg it was the crystals that I never got round to buying, they always seemed to be not quite the right one. And the variable clock mod often involved removing the speaker and I don't like doing that. This was a long time ago, before the kits haha
