This happens because Sonic 3 & Knuckles is essentially built on top of Sonic & Knuckles. Sonic & Knuckles's cartridge has a lock-on feature, and locking on Sonic 3 to it lets you play Sonic & Knuckles. What basically happened here is that when the game reset, it couldn't find that bit of data that tells it that Sonic 3 is locked on. Hence why you boot to Sonic & Knuckles instead. I've seen rare cases where the game will actually boot to Blue Sphere instead, the game that boots when you lock on a cartridge that isn't Sonic 2 or 3.
The bug happens because of the way the additional water spouts interact with that specific setpiece. If the game has a crash, it will usually default to playing the bottom cartridge, or S&K, to prevent cartridge damage. This happens in emulators because the game is exactly the same as the cartridge, so it loads the S&K rom instead of S3&K rom because it thinks it could damage a cartridge.
The debug mode in Sonic 3 is very different to the others episodes, this one can make crashing your cartridge and this is very laggy, this one is really for the developpers

Gbj: also known as softlock, basically you can control mario, but you are stuck in a place that you cant escape.
This glitch usually happens if there is object overflow. I was doing that with S-Monitor (the one that makes you hyper) and when you break them you can lag the game to the point that Sonic & Knuckles loses its ability to understand the Sonic 3 disc, and just ignores it.

I remember a S3 to S&K glitch happening to me once... can't remember how, though. I know it had something to do with Super Sonic, and I remember discovering something about Hyper sonic being fully functional in S&K. The transitioning to S&K happened just like it did in the video, but I remember making it occur had to do with Super Sonic. I can't remember whether or not I was doing it on S3 or S3&K, because I was playing on the GC Sonic Mega Collection. FOUND IT: I found the glitch and recognized it instantly. What I did was I placed tons of supersonic monitors and spindashed into them, hitting them all. The game on occasion freaked out and reset into Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I think that's when I discovered that Hyper Sonic could be used in Sonic & Knuckles. From what I've seen in these comments, there are apparently a lot of ways people got this glitch. I still think the 12 Super monitors works the easiest for me.
I found a similar version of this in s3k Normally the spindash will stop you from hitting every monitor in a giant clump like that but when I rolled into them it had no restraint and my game crashed I was messing around with sonic in knuckles sky sanctuary along with debug
I think I can actually explain what's going on here: Whenever Sonic and knuckles tries to start, it checks if sonic 3 or sonic 2 is attached, if yes, then load/Read the data of that game and continue If no Boot sonic and knuckles So doing that same glitch without a sonic and knuckles cartridge attached would result in a crash, with the sonic and knuckles cartridge, it falls back to sonic and knuckles
@@sonofmixit correction: If sonic 3 crashes with S&k locked on, sonic 3 never even starts back up, but s&k still tries to load the data, but can't due to the cartridge not being mounted as a Rom :P
I also got this bug a lot of times but in other stages, like Hidden Palace, and Somehow I even discovered an way to turn it back in Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Flying Battery
What seems to happen is that the crash confuses the cartridge. Because the cartrages hold their own RAM, the game has to read from both, but can only read from one at a time. The crash causes it to read from only the S&K RAM and it forgets about the Sonic 3 cart, just running the S&K data. The reason why this works in an emulator is that the rom is actually the 2 roms in 1 file.
That actaully happened to me one time... I was very wondered, I think to try it and get the glitch again... I got that glitch by: 1. Go in the Debug Mode. 2. Get into the Final Boss (Giant Robot before the Doomsday Zone) in Sonic & Knuckles (in Sonic 3 & Knuckles). 3. Get so many rings and turns into Super (Hyper) Sonic. 4. Get 0 lifes while you're in Super (Hyper) Sonic. 5. You'll go into Sonic & Knuckles after the ham restarts. I HOPE THAT HELPED YOU! Edit: Thanks for ❤ me!

i found another one, go to the start of act 2 in carnival night zone and then go into debug and start spawning hyper sonic boxes until the game starts lagging. after that you have to jump on the boxes at once and then you're gonna start flying everywhere and then you can press start to go to the sonic and knuckles menu screen.
more simple: go to any zone with debug mode enabled place a bunch of super sonic monitors without getting them outside the screen(don't stack them) spindash through the monitors when the game starts going crazy,reset the game by pressing start + a
Trance The Hedgehog Happened to me! What you have to do is open the sound test, by inputting left x2, right x1, left x 3, down 1, up 1, then start the game. Once the sound tests screen boots up, input 02, then 07, then 10, then 03, and finally 08. Then you will boot into Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but you also they the option to play Sonic 06.

It’s called overuse of debug mode. The game switches to its alternative, sonic & Knuckles, when it’s not able to take that much power. I think we’ve all learned something today.
DoctorEggrobo64 I think back in the MegaDrive days, SEGA wouldn't allow games to crash. They just looked everywhere for glitches, bugs and all that stuff and wouldn't publish your game until you fixed everything. The developers, knowing they couldn't make a flawless game, just added some lines of code to send you to the TITLE SCREEN (for example) if the game crashes or if there's an error. I think I saw that on "GameHut" 's channel.
This Happens To Me In The DS Classic Collection's S3&K, The Same Exact Effect Happens Using Debug Mode In Any Zone With Sonic And Tails Together By Spamming "S" Monitors And Geting Them All At Once, Eventually You Lose Control And You Will Slowly Loose All Your Lives. And It Will Revert To The S&K Start Screen.
@@randominternetman8177 It's been so long, but I remember being able to do the stage select cheat in Mushroom Hill and using that to get debug in Angel Island.
For me it's not really strange, actually... This is what I think: first off the glitchy sprites in the beginning were because the water's graphics are only loaded when Sonic is in certain areas of the level (to create the illusion of more VRAM). When placed in the wrong spots, you can sometimes be pushed inside the wall. Then, Sonic loaded a special area of the level improperly, which crashed the game in a way that the program counter jumped directly to the start of the code for Sonic & Knuckles. Sonic & Knuckles has a port where you can plug in another cartridge, like Sonic 2 or Sonic 3. When you started up your Genesis with Sonic 3 plugged in Sonic & Knuckles, the game starts Sonic & Knuckles differently, because another cartridge is plugged in. This crash started Sonic & Knuckles in a way that bypasses this check, and therefore the game assumes that no cartridge is plugged into Sonic & Knuckles, so Sonic & Knuckles starts up that way.
This glitch only occurs if you have the Sonic 3 & Knucles and to have it you have to insert the Sonic & Knucles enzyme cartridge from the Sonic 3 cartridge
My brother showed me this, but with a different way. He would go to angel island act 2, place a ton of super monitors, and then spindash into all of those, and it would show that but without any sprite glitches.
There's another way to do this too. Add thousands of super monitors (monitors with a blue letter S on it) in a line (i did that in the beginning of angel island act 2) and then spin dash as many of them as possible, at the same time. The game breaks down like that in this video when Sonic turns into Hyper Sonic. It will may need some trial and error for this one
Синий Крипер Well, the original S3 without S&K does have debug mode, but it is extremely hard to enter. At the start of the game, you have to wait until the Sega Screen fades, and then press up up down down up up up up up up up...... Until you hear a ring sound. But you'll have to do it in under a second (I think between the first 2 drum sounds), so you will need a few tries ;)
it doesn't Sonic 3 & Knuckles is just Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 3 levels added on and a tiny bit of Sonic 3 code this glitch screws with the game's memory and it resets into Sonic & Knuckles
Not to mention the title screen showing "Sonic 3 & Knuckles". Although, I like the fake extended version of the Sonic&Knuckles title screen track. It would be fun to make a real genesis version of that.
i also found this glitch by messing around with debug mode, i spawned a buuuuuuuuunch of S crates and broke all of them in 1 shot and it did the same thing xD

Here's a variation of the glitch: Start the game enabling Level Select + Debug Mode Go to Mushroom Hill Play the Knuckles cutscene then backtrack to the beginning Place about a dozen or more S monitors Spindash into them Either one of two things should happen 1) The game screen will go crazy 2) Super Sonic will teleport to where you usually start in Sonic & Knuckles (you cannot move) If you get these two without the game crashing, either the game will reset itself or just simply press start and then the Lock-On tech will forget Sonic 3 is inserted, booting up Sonic & Knuckles alone. I will also mention this is the only way to access debug mode in Sonic & Knuckles without cheating
I've done that glitch before. I think it has to do with something with Sonic 3 originally being Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Since Sonic 3 locks onto Sonic & Knuckles, it makes Sonic 3 and Knuckles. So it has Sonic & Knuckles stored so when you lock on Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles, it makes the Sonic and Knuckles stored in the ROM of Sonic 3 turn into Sonic 3 and Knuckles. This is just my own theory though.
