The sample sounds so real with the pitching/slight panning difference. I definitely want to try this technique, but use some M/S eq to get the sub centered more than the mid/highs. The pitching difference is incredible. So real

That’s brilliant. The two LoG albums produced by Machine are my favourites. I’m glad to be able to get some insights into the nuances that created such great sounds.

I did something like this using EZ drummer 13 years ago where i would actually manually tweak EACH kick hit so it sounded more natural.
@mastod0n1
@mastod0n1 5 месяцев назад
I use some natural drum sounds programmed in my songs and I always go in to the step editor and move most of the hits ever so slightly off grid. A milliseconds behind the beat or before and it really helps get a more natural sound. It takes some fine tuning but it's a great technique.

This was SO interesting. I've always been fascinated with Chris Adler's kick drum sound in Ashes of the Wake. It sounded so unique, powerful and punchy when the album was released and still does to this day. I loved it but never fully understood why until now. Crazy that they used a typewriter sample. I would never have guessed. He achieved what he set out to do: create a signature kick drum sound. I love it, I'm so glad he had this idea and followed through on it. This was great, thank you.

I still remember watching this stream live (and when he finally zapped that damn fly!!!). This moment here about separating the double-kick drums was just one of MANY insane knowledge bombs Machine dropped that day, and I still find myself revisiting the VOD for this and his Suicide Silence session every few months. Machine is a true mad scientist in the best possible way, with a helluva lot of rock solid information to pass on to younger engineers.

I remember back in the day i had a nice maple mapex kit and i had axis pedals. The plastic part that was the beater stripped out and would rip my head. I pulled it off and just used the metal part on the beater against a metal kick pad. When my kick was miced up at a show it sounded so wicked and unique

I've been in a producing hole. Been using new programs and methods and I got overwhelmed with the new stuff I was using tricked out Ipads for a while but then I switched to a MacBook pro. Now I have way more options and variables than I'm used to. So I kind of shelved it I really needed this video, I found it on accident. While driving back home to base, I have a small tracking studio setup in the barracks. I am artillery and I love groove metal and nu metal and speed metal and I guess you could call the 3rd wildcard genre atmospheric sludge blues tech hop? Idk man. Gordon light foot, zakk wylde and Wes borland are simultaneously influencing my guitar work

It's of course not as dynamic, but I believe if you put your double beater pedal off center, you will get decently varying tones between the two. Sweet spot and tuning, but yeah not as good as two separate drums. Side note, this kind of reminds of when sequencing MIDI drums, you can change the velocity of the notes to create a more natural sounding drum part or fill, particularly on the snare drum.

If you were sitting 20 ft or so in front of a double kick kit being played irl the kicks would be slightly in stereo. This is great advice and really should be obvious if you think about it.

Not sure the mono/stereo explanation makes any sense given that each speaker doesn’t know or care about what the other one is doing. It definitely sounds better in stereo but I don’t think because of it ‘being harder for a speaker to reproduce mono’

3:05 what are you talking about? :D that's completely dumb. What you are saying does not make sense whatsoever. There is nothing in the construuction nor operation of a speaker driver that prevents it from handling _various amplitudes of frequencies over time_ because _That is the very definition of what the driver is designed to do_ : move according to the amplitude of the input signal.

That's fucking great! I've done the detune and uptune, but not the slight pan thing...errhh actually I did on a single vocal that I had to make into 4 backgrounds, but not a fucking kick! Crazy. But please....NO MORE SAMPLES!!! If your gonna do any samples. Take 20min-1hr before you start tracking the very first song, and hit each drum with different intensities, record it and label it correctly as so and so's drum-set sample pack or whatever. Then take those hit's and use them like samples. If not then your just doing what everyone else does, which is why every single fucking thing sounds THE SAME and robotic!
@Gravengaard
@Gravengaard 5 месяцев назад
I hate samples with a passion too... Makes most records sound sterile and boring and at the end it's really just lazy! I've recorded my top of the line Pearl Masterworks in some of the best studios, with some of the best mics and preamps. Only to get them quantizised and sampled to death. I might as well have recorded the stuff on some cheap as electronic drum kit. Sadly I didn't have creative control in the band I was in at the time, because now I'm fucking adament to have my drums sound like MY drums. However - typewriter. I have to say that's pretty hilarious..
