First impression those are absolutely ridiculous. Second impression after learning they were modeled after Astro Boys boots, honestly that's kind of neat
Hahaha I loved them from the start - like sure, can they be combined with clothes to create a good outfit- hardly. Or rather: it’s a challenge. But these boots are so ridiculous, they’re great! Art doesn’t always have to be deeply philosophical, it can be weird and fun as well! It makes me even more happy to see that they were actually done rather well!
They make me smile. I am 52 and grumpy but they make me smile. Also when I saw them I thought Astro Boy so they got that spot on. I also thought Lazy Town for some reason. I think it's just the rubberyness and that they are a caricature of a boot. This is the first time I've heard of the MSCHF brand. I will keep an eye out from now on.
@@ruthmoreton6975 lol, don't worry, the projection is *STRONG* with Kia El; It's not you who has the sexual view of Lazy Town, he's subscribed to 'Magic Dance,' a youtube channel featuring preteen girls in leotards, and 'Chic Magic' which is nothing but slideshows of large busted women posing in skimpy "fashion". Must go well with his Matt Walsh and Sargon of Akaad subscriptions. Do you think the creep knows his subscriptions are public? Oh jesus, it just keeps going. 'Saginaw Girls Dance Studio,' multiple yoga chicks, do I keep scrolling?
I think you described them best in three words right at the end. They're just Big Wacky Boots. I think they're fun and different. And they definitely have the effect of making you look like a cartoon character.
I'm not only impressed by your approach to examining the boots, I'm impressed at your take on boots/footwear/fashion and art in general, and even further impressed at how you've made something I would've never given a thought to highly entertaining and engaging. If someone told me 3 days ago I'd watching hours and hours of some dude cutting shoes in half and looking forward to hours more, I wouldn't have believed it! Cheers!
They wouldn't be out of place in a haute couture fashion show, the kind where designers go all-out, showing off wild pieces no sane person would wear in public, which occasionally turn viral and/or cause outrage. MSCHF's innovation is actually selling them in the same price range as regular streetwear fashion.
People don't even wear that shit, it's just stupid designers pretending they are artist, instead of making clothes they are making cartoon characters and they believe they are epic LOL
My cousin bought one as a joke and I tried them on. Felt so comfortable. I can't express how good they felt. If the desigh were a little less childish and a little less clunky, I would def buy one pair for myself. Edit: Some guy down in the thread told me to get some crocs and I did. They are def lighter than these. I wouldn't say same level of comfort as these but they come pretty close for their amount.
I had a friend in the 90’s who had a pair of Moon boots.. they were skiing fashion, and through winter he wore them at Uni, they were really cool and good fun. We were artists, so it was ok. But I think people should play if they want. It’s not chaos so much as it is debugging the stasis of ordinary. Girls would rock in these pretty well. The guys, yeah they can do it:)
In the 80's there was a similar fashion item called "Moon boots", they were build for walking on snow, thick foam insulation for protection against the cold and a big footprint to keep you from sinking too deep in soft snow, I think these boots will do the same during the winter in ski sports ressorts.
Ironically, ghese boots would likely make excellent snake boots because if you got struck at by most snakes, there's no way that it's fangs would be able to reach your skin through all of the foam shapes.
I'm not familiar with this brand at all so I have to thank you for keeping me up to date lol. I'm often amazed at what's considered art these days..... and then I remember the paper dresses that women wore in the 60's that started off as mail order dresses from the Scott paper company (better known for their toilet tissue) for pennies and shortly after fashion designers were selling hand painted paper dresses and gowns for thousands of dollars. They remained in fashion for much of the 60's decade. These made me think back to artists creations in my young life when I found it absolutely wonderful to know someone was able and willing to think and step outside the box and realize I would've thought that these were Interesting before, which in reality makes it hard for me to criticize them now. It's good to know creativity on this level still exists, and that not only are they a work of art but the company put real effort into making them functional. That for the time they last they really will be functional and although clunky, pretty comfortable as well. I for one would LOVE to see the wavy shoe cut in half. 😁
Art is garbage these days, in some museums janitors have thrown the "art" in the bin and they have to replace it, like that famous piece "banana stuck to wall with duct tape"😂
@@MercenaryBlackWaterz people have said "art is garbage these days" in just about every century. The same is said about music, literature and just about everything else with each decade
Mschf has made a lot of interesting stuff, you might want to take 5 minutes to google the many products they put out. It's certainly a fun experience, like driving around a car that you could get, buying exclusive stuff at a convenience store that only a few could buy if you have the right ID, imagine baseball card packs but instead there were fake IDs, etc. While it's a hype brand, they put out a lot of silly fun stuff
Tbh, I was looking at these boots thinking “I’ve seen these before in a cartoon” but for the life of me couldn’t remember which one!Thank you for reminding me of a show I used to watch when I was little!
Over 10 years ago, I bought a pair of Caterpillar boots. I decided I didn't particularly like the design when I got them home, and put them in a closet. I recently took them out, and tried them on. The midsole completely disintegrated. I wish I'd known that TPU had that susceptibility. I see Caterpillar are still selling very similar boots in the £100-£130 range. I'll be sticking to more traditional materials in future. I've kept the upper, insole, and outsole. I might try reconstructing it with a leather midsole at some point for entertainment. It wouldn't make sense to take it to a cobbler for that. The construction quality is too cheap to justify the expense.
That happens with more shoes than not, it's not an issue of caterpillar's. The only way to avoid that is to store shoes susceptible in a humidity-controlled dry environment.
@@Neomalthusiano A humidity-controlled dry environment is a difficult thing to accomplish in damp Scotland. I don't want the expense of buying, and running, a dehumidifier. I brought out other pairs of shoes and trainers that had been in my closet for a long time, and seemed to use a similar material in their construction. They seem okay for the time being, but I will be prioritising their use before they fall apart on me. The annoying thing is that I quite like the feel of these spongy synthetic midsoles. Live and learn. It'll be leather from now on. I have bought the leather to reconstruct the boots that fell apart, along with leather working tools. Now I just need to find the time for it. I wish I hadn't given away the cast iron shoe anvil set that I inherited from my father. One of my ancestors was a cobbler. I've given a number of things away over the years that I now regret. That's definitely one of them.
@@HistoricGentleman I generally hate buying clothes and shoes. About once a decade, I'll buy a load of them to see me through the next ten to fifteen years. I've had things no longer fit before when I try them on later, or decide I don't like the style. These get given to charity. This is the first time that something I bought new has completely disintegrated on me. Though I have experienced a few other occasions where rubberised materials start to 'sweat' and disintegrate.
Saw the ysl boots repaired on another channel, what utter shit it was, more or less a scam sadly. But I concur, I’d love to see that as well. My dream would be Carol Christian poell boots!
@@dennisnordlund902 CCP is probably the most out of budget shoe that has been asked on this channel hahaha. But yeah I'd also love for some CCP, Guidis, Rick Owens, or other more "artisanal" shoe brands out there
The first time that I saw these, someone had bolted a pair of rollerskate plates to them and took them for a trip around the skate park. I thought that they would be really floppy but seeing how difficult it was to get them off, my mind has been changed.
I bet they'd be great in snow. If you had to walk through 10 inches to a foot of snow to get to the store or wherever, these would probably be wonderful. With the hollow voids they'd be pretty well insulated. The large footprint would be grippy and lessen the amount you'd sink into the snow.(Like a snowshoe) They appear to be waterproof. SO yeah if you had to walk in deep snow, with these boots, it appears that your feet would stay warm & dry. Are there more practical solutions to walking in snow? For sure. are these boots fun and silly and lighthearted? Again, for sure. Another commenter said these would be great for cosplay. They'd be a good starting point for building up a beastly pair of feet or the feet of a mech by adding more foam, fur, claws, spikes ..whatever, and then painting them or covering them in an appropriate material to achieve the look for the costume.
I get the Astro Boy immediately. They also make me think Mikey Mouse feeling fancy in red. I was surprised by how detailed it was inside. I also expected it to be just foam.
Thank you for exposing the substance to go with the form of this shoe. I love how it looks dumb but a lot of real thought went into it. It just goes to show that something so simple can be industrially designed so well.
I think it would be interesting to have you do a blind review. Where your staff picks out a boot or shoe in your size and you have no idea what it is they don’t even give you the box just the shoes and from there do you have to provide feedback as to wearability, comfort, design And construction. As well as guess the price
Probably the best take on the Big Red Boots I've seen so far. I was one to dismiss this... but you have to give them credit for the design to make it work. The burning tests also made me aware of something I've never thought of in terms of designs of things like these as well. Great job on the video. Very objective.
I actually love these, they're definitely not my thing but imo fashion should be fun. I love seeing people enjoy themselves in their clothing and footwear
Someone wore a pair of them to my daughter's community college graduation. They look so crazy in real life! I'm 50 years old and I would absolutely rock a pair given the chance.
This is absolutely the most interesting video in a good while, simply because you look at it and WONDER what's inside it. We all have a pretty good idea of what most boots or sneakers have on the inside, but this is just so out there and so cool because of that.
I like them. They’re ridiculous but they’re also so out of place that they completely stand out. I kinda want one now after watching this, just for the chaos it would cause.
I love that these exist. We need art that pushes boundaries, and this is certainly wearable art. We need creatives like this to keep innovation and progress going forward.
The three-chambered section above the foot is a squish chamber so you can get your feet into and out of them. That chamber collapses so your foot can angle in and angle out. See the cutaway to understand.
Honestly I can see these working as wonderful cosplay boots for some characters. Could potentially even work as a fursuit foot base to build on. Its a fun reference for the Astro Boy nerds or expensive rainboots for the rest of the crowd 😂
I tried to find an astroboy nerd, but it seems that they are all either in a cemetery or nursing homes. Not a very marketable target audience, I believe. lol
You might even be able to justify the $350, despite being made in China, because they must have developed a pretty wacky process to fuse all those different foam parts together and have it look fairly seamless in the end. The tooling needed to start production of these things probably wasn't cheap at all.
Honestly, it doesn’t really matter how well made they are. If a person legitimately wore these as their main pair of shoes, the weight of them alone would quickly cause serious hip pains.
My first thought was that one's foot would just be swimming in this boot but thumbs up to the designers for making it wearable on the inside and ridiculous on the outside😅
I think they're fun, but I also think if they were rain boots people wouldn't make fun of them quite so much. Because, y'know, rainboots are sort of huge already anyways.
I can see how these sell - my (53 year old and Japanese) wife saw me watching this and asked what they are. She said they are 'Cool' but you need to dress up to wear them. 😆
Seeing where their inspiration is from, the only correct way to wear them is these boots, a speedo, and an improbable hairstyle... and nothing else. Pass.
I remember a Calvin & Hobbes Sunday strip from the mid 80s where Calvin wants his hair cut to look like Astroboy. Even then I thought it was weird Calvin would know Astroboy. But Calvin would want these boots, and I don't remember if he has nipples.
Awesome analysis. I appreciate how well you cover the technical aspects as well as give the boot's artistic side its props. I was STUNNED by the cross section. So much more thought went into the design than what I had expected. Thanks for a great look at the weird truth of Big Red Boots.
Quick rundown: if these boots easily catch fire from a stray ember, ensure you have someone to pull the flaming red boot off. Other than that they are surprisingly practical.
Does RosebAnvil have any kind of a "TRIP HAZARD" test? I thinkgoing down or up a regular set of stairs could be a life safety challenge. So many are willing to suffer for their art, but to go through traction after buying somebody else's art is a step too far. Thanks for the analysis.
Wow, much more functional than I would've thought - personally would never wear, but respect that MSCHF is out there doing this kind of experimentation and punking the culture.
I'd love to see you cut a Danner RAT boot. I've been wearing mine for over a year, everyday.... Very impressed with them. Love your videos, keep up the awesome bisections!!
Question: I see that you want boots to cause a bounce in the bar drop, but I have Footprint Kingfoam insoles which sell based on deadening an impact, especially for skateboarding. I'm thinking maybe it's two different things maybe going on and that maybe these don't contradict. I have spinal issues so i wear them to absorb impact, not to return energy. am i doing the right thing?
Greetings from Canada! I don't know if you take requests from the comments section, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to make a video on some Canadian made work boots? There are dozens of companies to choose from here, like dayton, Canada West, and companies that also have very unique boot designs, like manitobah Also, seeing reviews about Canada West's 34309 lace-up boot or Daytons 6406 csa work boot would be good because I've been looking at purchasing those, but no reviews exist about them online. Thanks for making such great videos!🇨🇦
tbh it's oddly refreshing to see a Hype Object that has some legit engineering, art, craftsmanship, + thoughtfulness justifying the Hype somewhat, at least.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind them around the shop, they seem like quite good protection for toes and don't pick up wood shavings (and in any case could be just washed with hose).
1st thought: "TOO COSPLAY!" 2nd thought:"maybay?!🤔" Thanks for doing these! as a big astroboy fan(and lover of interesting fashion) ive been fascinated by these but thought they werent worth the hype and looked way too cosplay to buy. Now that youve dissected and broken them down i want a pair to display & perhaps sometimes wear! 😭 i wish u guys woulda tested going up or down stairs though haha like are they functional enough for that?! ANOTHER greatttt video nonetheless! 👏🏾👏🏾💕
These are super fun boots. I love it when you do unique footwear like this boot. I'm not surprised by the engineering. Seeing people walking in them was an indicator that they were well made because they had a fairly normal gait. If their gait was stompy and wide then I would assume the boots were gimmicky garbage.
Art. It demands interpretation based on its form, rather than its function. Boots are boots. These are a challenge to anyone made uncomfortable by mischief and whimsy. The Astro Boy ref is just icing on a deliciously intriguing cake.
This would be the most interesting shoe to see Retail vs Reps. Very interested to see what the differences in their structure is considering these are some pretty intricately crafted boots.
That's great! Thanks for your willingness to step up and admit to it. If I could afford them I'd buy a pair just to give myself joy everytime I looked at them and to make others laugh and give them a release. Too much rage in the world. We all need a fun break.
@@nuthinbutlove You wouldn't worry people would potentially direct their rage at you for wearing them? People are getting violently triggered seeing clothing items with rainbows on them today.
I have seen these boots for so long, heard a lot of things, and now that the trend has died down, I know that I still really love these boots. I’m a fashion designer and love artsy looks and was wondering if these shoes were worth buying. After your amazing review, I honestly might !
Great video, interesring and in depth. Just a to nitpick, I think the flame test may lead to misleading result. A torch is a really focused source of heat, I would've liked to see what happens if you wear them next to a fireplace, stove or even a stage light.
Excellent analysis. I’d seen these boots around online endlessly (as well as the collective’s other art/commerce pranks), and I LOVE Astro Boy… Even though he’s SO important in the history of Anime, he’s not the first or the “grandfather of all animation” by a long shot. The first Anime feature was 1945’s Momotaro: Sacred Sailors, and the first animated film was Fantasmagorie in 1908.
Well, I gotta give them credit for actually making a real boot and not just a gimmick. Initially, I thought they were pure, solid rubber just moulded into the shape ad that they weight like 15-20lbs per boot.
Its way more expensive than it needs to be considering the materials... so is almost every other brand name shoe on the market today. I'm just happy to see they made them actually comfortable. Not many things like this take the time to.
These made me think of some kinda soviet era rain boots that everybody would wear just because they look different than the only other, sad-looking, usually-available model
Have you ever put a pair of Keen boots through your tests? It’s too late for me to see it before I buy them but I own two pairs of them, two pairs of their sandals and one pair of their shoes. I didn’t purposely set out to get Keens. It just happened that way. Those were the ones I liked. Now I’m curious to see what you think of them. Are they good quality? Mine seem to be and they are comfortable (after kind of a tough break in period on one pair).
The creator of the big red boots is such a genius..matching oversized boots for today's oversized fashion. It's a beautiful climax to the oversized fashion trend that pervaded during the pandemic.
OK this was cool but now someone needs to make a video taking it to The Club & hitting the dance floor. (Subbed bc this was good thorough open-minded fair exploratory commentary for what could be easily disregarded as "meaningless superficiality" & I respect people willing to look at fashion, art, Hype Objects, + pop culture phenomena with a healthy mix of awe, skepticism, wit, curiosity, + genuine willingness to fully engage with the thing being explored & kaleidoscopic potential meanings or deeper impulses guiding its design + creation.)
they are beautiful. i was wearing astroboy merch in the 90s. i would love wearing them with black and green shorts or whatever. this being said, now they are a status symbol for influencers and public weirdos and i don't wanna be one of them. there is a difference between playing along with the hype and being actually fashion forward and individual.
im surprised that mschf wouldnt put that cutaway view on their website, it would make the price alot more justifiable since most people think it will be a single piece of foam like a croc,
A lot of people bought these for around $400 and immediately put them for sale online, even before they received their own orders. Of course, we saw them for sale at $1,000 each pair. Yeah, nah, how's that working out?
