Surf and bhop mechanics are ubiquitous in gaming. Titles like CSGO, TF2, and Apex Legends have integrated airstrafing mechanics into their movement systems. However, a few lesser known games have also taken advantage of this unique system, with varying results. KoboldKare, Bunnyhop: Eggstreme, Fragsurf, Vivid Surf, and Momentum Mod are the focus of our exploration today. If you'd like to check out any of these titles check out the links below.

I think in order for Momentum Mod to really take off and become THE hub for all the surf communities to combine it will take the top surfers from all the different respected communities to actually make the switch. The problem with this being that KSF pros and other competitive server pros are not going to want to give up all that they have worked for getting stage and world records, years and years of work. KSF for example has so many years of data in their database and all the little things that the pros are used to. It really is going to take these top players banding together to decide that its like a fresh start in the world of surf and they will all compete for the new leaderboard. Plenty of other competitive games have leaderboards that reset at differing amounts of time and the top players of those games still want to compete after a wipe. I'd like to know what some of the top surfers think about this issue.

on another idea, you could theoretically just write a script to transfer data over since they are pretty "similiar-ish" systems so it may be possible to one day move data, but I doubt that would happen.

I personally like “Hot Lava” by Klei. In certain levels it has additional movement mechanics like pogo sticks, jet packs, wall-jumps, ropes, etc.

Hot Lava was pretty great, but the surfing is extremely lackluster in comparison to any other surfing game.

@@EZHNO True, the surfing does feel weird. I just really like the other aspects of the game and the aesthetic. It's underrated in my opinion.

Vivid surf is unreal engine 5. It has lumen support ie software ray tracing. Not that it matters in a surf game. Vivid surf feels quite different but its real nice. Played the demo last year. Took me several hours to be able to beat the hardest maps and get used to the physics.

I think Hot Lava is a successful take on taking bhop movement mechanics and making it their own. It is still weird too hold "w" while bhopping but otherwise it is cool.

Are you an ambassador for Momentum Mod, or just really excited for it? Of course I am pretty stoked for it too, but something about the transition from Vivid Surf to Momentum Mod seemed like you were kinda minimizing Vivid - it looks super nice, is definitely an transformative/iterative concept not using Source engine, & the mouse-only controls will be massive for getting new players onboard w/ it. EDIT: it seems that Techen, the Vivid Surf dev, has been radio silent since Nov 1st, 2021. The last thing on his twitter was from Nov 27th, 2021 was retweeting the Momentum Mod announcement. I dunno if he called it quits, but I hope the vision shown in the gameplay of his game makes it to market - looked soooo dope.

@@benjisurf it definitely potentially could, but it also could open up things to allow for maps far beyond what would be feasible for normal surfing. I hope it sees the light of day so we can at least find out for ourselves someday, no doubt

You should check out bunny hop league, it has both bhop and surf, but the surfing feels kinda janky

tried adding surf maps from cs files directly to the map folder in momentum mod and the map doesnt seem to be showing when i load it up, any ideas on how to make it work?

I don't think a lot of people ONLY surf, at least I don't. I mix up surf inbetween matches and it would be much more cumbersome to switch game all the time, especially because when playing surf in cs then you still get the cs feel of the game and it won't take away inbetween matches, but if I was to play another game inbetween then I would have to warm up every time again. I also think a lot of people like to combine the surfing elements with gameplay and thus a standalone will take away that. Surfing is a part of cs, it can't just be taken out.
