Man, I love these eldritch cartoon villains! I really like it when animated shows treats it's target audience like mature. It really gives away challenging themes and development. These sinister and demonic baddies really stands out for their respective shows! And it's so inspiring for how they're all portrayed.
I think Belos is the most unique eldritch one in this video essay, because he was once a human who became a demonic being somewhere along the way and lost his humanity as a result.
Well, Belos is my favourite villain. I wouldnt clasify him as eldritch being tho, he is more like a wendigo/skinwalker type of evil creature since in mythology skinwalkers start out as humans but their continuous practive of evil canibalistic dark magics prolongs their life and slowly turns them into a grotesque spirit capable of shapeshifting and possession. Belos doesnt directly eats witches flesh but he consumes palismans which contain living essence and were once a part of the witches that made them. Similar thing basically. He is actually scary precisely because he torments heroes psychologically and not so much with brute force, but boy does can he dish out brute force when he wants it..
19:43 yeah, well the Collector was clearly a victim of Belos' manipulation. Plus, he had older siblings that rejected him and refused to play with him as i recalled
spicy take but eldritch horror also allows you to keep stories simple they allow you to create a VERY clear distinction of good and evil you can sprinkle in moral complexity episodically if you want to but you always have the potential for a main plot with a villain who is completely inhuman and evil, you don't have to deal with grey or complex morality any more than the writer feels like moment to moment
Eldritch horror is, weirdly enough, perfect for children's media in terms of dodging censors, because it's just such an unknowable nonsensical concept that will always sound silly on paper to a corporate executive, but then is made and leaves people and children astonished
Patrick :" hes scared of minorities" Lovecraft :" I AM NOT!" patrick :" oooooh, person whos different to you" Spongebob : " STOP IT PATRICK YOU'RE SCARING HIM!"
Hush now, hide, all you little ones Rush now, into the middle of nowhere Singing and laughter will die Dreamless sleep, follows the Nowhere King When his kingdom comes, darkness is nigh Quiet, crawl to the in-between Silent, secretive feeling Of fearsome hatred that reaches the skies You will bring joy to the Nowhere King When he sees the light leaving your eyes
This video is amazing and explains it all so eloquently. Will definitely be keeping my eye out for future vids of urs. Never even heard of eldritch before but have always gravitated towards that style so is nice to know what it actually is!
A suprising amount of the vilians listed were defeated by mostly unnamed characters from their past who, bu defeating them, in sone sense killed their most loved one.
I have to wonder if anime and video games had a hand in giving more modern cartoons eldritch abominations to fight. Stuff like DBZ and Sonic the Hedgehog have featured pitting the main cast of colorful characters against cosmological horrors that threaten existence for little over a decade before we started seeing it in cartoons.
one of the only threats that made me say "yeah that's an eldritch/Lovecraftian horror" was surprisingly the wither storm from Minecraft story mode. (It even has the tentacles that Lovecraft hated so much) it goes sucking up parts of blocks from the world to turn into its own body. making it grow more and more. and the main characters had to stop it with a nuke (The Formidi-bomb). but that didn't even work. it just split off like a virus and continued to grow! and all because it just started as a wither with a command block in-between its ribcage. The wither storm also has a mod for it now (Or even multiple) that showcases how DEVASTATING it is. just completely tearing up your world. and also, it gives you stage 4 cancer (Wither sickness). It's one of my all-time favorite forces of nature villain. even if the game itself is iffy at times.
I think that the overlord from Lego Ninjago would also be a great example of eldtrich horror, since he is the embodiment of evil and has been present since the creation of Ninjago, a being opposing God and he is the one that shifted the balance between light and shadow, and also Lloyd is forced by destiny to face him, because God didn't defeat the overlord and only delayed the inevitable
12:11 The Lich is a primordial, basically one of the beings that were shown and elaborated on from the sea of monsters and the scene of the Lich traumatizing the king of ooo. All primordials like hunson abadeer coconteppi and orgalorg existed before time and space and the multiverse and some, like the Lich and even beings like Arklothac from the adventure time comics transcend space and time and usually entire planes of existence with statements explaining (on the Lich) of his cosmic origins after the sea of monsters having one of his incarnations being a catalyst comet. But instead of being a comet of change, it's of destruction and evil, since the Lich is well the embodiment of evil, stated by the purple catalyst comet in the rightfully named episode "The Comet" where orgalorg also shows up. The Lich while not directly classified as a god is basically above them, as even death was a victim of the Lich and old death was literally scared of the Lich in the comics. Not to mention him killing the immortal cosmic citadel guardians, possessed death with no difficulty, killed prismo (as a sleeping old man) destroyed entire multiverses created by dreamers as a comet (this is stated in the enchiridion and marcy and simon's scrapbook which you can buy) and has shown multiple times that gods and even universes mean nothing to him even calling death a pawn and worthless entity and after becoming omnipresent and destroying countless universes in the infinite multiverse, that's a justified sentiment
2:13 BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Man, I just love this moment, it cracks me up every, bloody, time I watch it! 😆
THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT PLAYGROUND 7:38 I generally love the short so much and wish every day that it does end up turning into something more and by people like you talking about it. It helps make that little step more towards that ❤❤❤
Eldritch horrow is really good, but its also just too nebular to actually get to you... I remember being more scared of Slade from OG Teen Titans, and how he continued to torment Robin even after he was gone... Damn it sucks they cancelled it.
The least I can say is that not many people agree with the separation and division you've established between "Lovecraftian", "Eldritch", and "Cosmic" horror categories. Actually, I cannot find a single source that would back up your take.
Probably Golb. Like, in the actual show, unlike the other characters from the shows that I've seen like Bill cipher, and belos, Gold was never actually killed. Betty fused with golb, buy ot isn't dead like the other villians. Also based on how it easily turned the Lich into a block... yeaahhh I'm not sticking around after seeing it.
If I had a nickel for every time cartoon teens or a teen defeated a eldritch being, I’d have 8 nickels. It’s not much but it’s weird how it happened 8 times. ( there’s definitely more that I haven’t talked about )
The beast is the most unique in my opinion. Even now, we are don't know who or what he is since the show didn't give us any information about him and it's one of the reasons why i love him so much, and unlike the others, the beast isn't really a power villain who you can only defeat with super powers. He manipulated people in order to stay alive and at the end, he was defeated by his own lie. The most popular theory is that he is a creature between life and death that represents purgatory, but I guess we will never know for sure
watch 0:53-0:55 at .25x speed (don't if you have tropophobia)
Bill is the Most Unique villians, or even character, that ive ever seen. He was born in Euclidya(the 2nd dimension) except...he could "see the stars" so see the 3rd dimension, but no one believed him, So he Bùŕñţ èvéŕýţhïñğ down to 1 Singular Atom. He escaped to the Nightmare realm at the centre of the Multiverse with No laws of physics and is very unstable. Bill Conquers the Nightmare realm over 1 TRILLION years. After realising that his realm wouldn't last forever he sought a stable reality, eventually finding Our universe. From the beginning of Humanity he tried to get people to build a portal for him to leave the Nightmare realm, eventually he found Ford...and then Gravity falls Hè§ śţįłł øųť ţhëřě...
1) What did my boy Khan ever do to you? He is not an eldrich horror, he's basically just a fay. Not evil, not very powerful, doesn't think mortals are insignificant. 2) YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, DEAD SOUND FOOTAGE SPOTTED!!!!!!!!!!!! 3) It's 2024, everybody knows that Bill is just one big pathetic triangle of parental issues and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Doesn't sound very eldrich either.
Yes, Bill might have that, but he is also one trillion years old, you don’t get that far in life without knowing some ancient secrets, and plus, he is the king of the nightmare realm, a place where the laws of physics forgot about.
I don't think some of those characters are eldritch horrors the litch is a type of dark sorcerer that made himself immortal for all of eternity and the monster from over the garden wall is probably an ent or a tree spirit and the monster from the centaur cartoon is a wendigo and bill cipher is based on the illuminati triangle eye thing and the other creatures are probably based on other dark mythological creatures from folklore an eldritch horror is a space alien behemoths that's bigger than a planet that has many eyes and tentacles and mouths and they eat planets and make people go mad and they are worshipped by cults and they'll have minions sometimes like Nyarlathotep and his minions the migo
In my villainous AU the red evil AU and snakes and spiders my lover and I has our eldritch horror hybrid characters fight heroes and save civilians and raise a family and yes they have they're own human like ways and moments my lover and I characters have children they made some and adopted some
Eldritch can describe super ancient, or can more generally describe stuff that is spooky, inhuman, disturbing, or weird. For the purposes of this video, I'm talking about eldritch creatures as strange/disturbing characters who draw from lovecraftian ideas
I think the word eldritch originally described fae-related things - ancient and darkly whimsical, with motivations that were incomprehensible to mortal minds.
