Join me on my solo West Highland Way adventure. Unfortunately things didn't quite go to plan and I had to bail. I loved every minute whilst out on this iconic trail in the Scottish Highlands and I'll be back next year for another crack at it. Luckily it was nothing serious and I managed to get home just fine, albeit a few pounds lighter, both in my wallet and on the scales.
To all the amazing people who stopped and helped me out on the trail, by packing my gear away, giving me tablets, water, walking with me for a bit to spur me on and even calling the park ranger for assistance. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The hiking community really is amazing and it's great to know that even if you are out there alone, there is always amazing people around to look out for you.

Hi, i’m one of the two guys who helped you pack up. I can testify you looked rough and in hindsight we should have accompanied you back to the hotel. We alerted a few other walkers heading in your direction to look out for you. I hope you get a chance to do it again.

Hey, so glad you got in touch. I wanted to thank you both so much for helping me out, you were life savers. You did more than enough and I would never have let you walk me back to the hotel. Thanks also for alerting some of the other hikers. It set of a chain reaction of everyone passing stopping, checking on me and helping out in some way. It was a bit embarrassing putting the video together...I looked a state. 😂 I hope you both had a great time on the rest of the walk and thanks so much again.

Good effort, it goes to show that you never know when life is going to throw a spanner in the works. Prior to that you looked as though you were struggling a tad, possibly because whatever you had was already at work. A few lessons from that which chimed from my failed attempt, one was about the amount of gear you were carrying. The WHW has a great deal more places to pick up essentials, and you can save a lot of weight by eating meals at pubs and cafes en-route, only carrying one day's food at a time. I made the mistake of carrying a horrendous amount of food, which added a considerable amount of unnecessary weight. Good luck on your next attempt.
@trickofthetrail
@trickofthetrail Год назад
Hey there. Yeah you are correct, I was struggling a bit before hand, but that was because I suffer with a small blood condition that can give me fatigue. Annoyingly it came on the day before I started, so I knew it was going to be a slog for me. Whilst not the cause, it certainly wouldn't have helped the issue. Sorry to hear you also didn't make it to the end. May I ask what happened? Funnily enough my pack wasn't actually that heavy. I have pretty lightweight gear and in fact, a few people on the trail couldn't believe how light the pack was. However you are absolutely right. I took far too much food. Next time I will carry much less for sure (I'm not compromising on the beer though 😁). Like you say, one days worth is enough. Thanks so much for watching and commenting mate.
@AirdrieRambler
@AirdrieRambler Год назад
@trickofthetrail I was camped at Inversnaid. In the morning I went down to the loch to fill my pot with water, slipped, and fell in the water. With my gear soaked, I chafed my inner thighs and by the time I got to Crianlarich I could barely walk... Because of the weight of my tent,sleeping bag, etc, I had cut down on spare layers. Had I had some, I could have got changed into dry gear, but that wasn't an option. Lesson painfully learned...

I've run some figures through it and it looks like it would be around 385.38 GBP in total. Thanks very much Joe, glad you found the video useful...whilst it lasted. Fingers crossed I'll do a full version next year. Re the water bottle holder. I've actually got two: 3F UL GEAR Water Bottle Storage Bag - www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004777968563.html Prickly Gorse Shoulder Strap Pockets - pricklygorsegear.com/backpack-accessories/ The one I had on the WHW was from 3F UL, but I think I actually prefer the Prickly Gorse one as it's longer and so the bottle sits lower on the shoulder strap. I found with the 3F UL one it was a bit high and occasionaly hit my face when I turned. I chose the Lightening, because I find it more comfortable at higher loads. I also find I can fit a little more in it, especially with the addition of the Flash pocket. For me personally I find the Mo is great for lighter loads, but the Lightening just handles those higher loads slightly better. Also the Lightening has more airflow on the back, so I find it is better at stopping my back from getting too sweaty. How are you getting on with the Lightening 45?
@TwoLovesAndLou
@TwoLovesAndLou Год назад
@@trickofthetrail Thanks for the details on the bottle holders. I have just came from an Osprey Atmos 50 before picking up the Lightning and I only have the two to compare: * Much better back ventilation. * Half the weight whilst having a frame in case of heavier amounts of water to carry. * Easier to rummage through as the pack materials are thin and light. * I like the way the adjustment straps allow you to set a maximum extension so you can make the range of loosening and tightening fairly precise. * The compression system has got me thinking about not compressing my sleeping bag, just stuffing it in a dry bag in the bottom and using the bag to compress (in theory the down would then only be as compressed as required? Rather than maximum, meaning it should loft quicker and less compression means it should preserve it?). It's a rare scenario where you feel like you've upgraded but the upgrade was £100 less 😆

Can I offer a bit of constructive criticism, you said you’d done a lot of planning but didn’t know your bail out points or methods of transport from those bail out points, next time work out your exit routes in case of emergency. One was the ferry across Loch Lomond to ardlui from where you could get the train or bus to Glasgow. When doing a long distance route especially in remote areas know how to get out if need be and that includes frequency of transport no good finding a bus stop on a Sunday and no bus until Wednesday. I know this sounds a bit harsh but could be the difference between a 24hr bug and a survival situation. Good video very honest 👍

I did know my exit points at various stages along the way and was aware of the ferry that crosses Loch Lomond (although had forgotten whilst being sick), unfortunately it wasn't running at that point. Although I have to admit, there are points along the way where I didn't plan for the worst and next time I will absolutely mark down how I can get out of dodge at each and every stage. I do always carry my Garmin InReach Mini with me, so I do have communication if the worse comes to the worst. Obviously a last resort that is. I was also amazed at the kindness of all the fellow hikers along the route, who helped me get to safety. Thanks so much for watching and your feedback. Absolutely will take it on board. 👍

@@trickofthetrail glad you saw it that way, on all my hikes I know all my bail out points and I have them stored digitally and I also take them on paper folded in a tiny plastic bag because in an emergency you need clear concise accurate information fast to make the correct call, I copied this Approach from Andrew Skurka and use his planning sheets/tools for every trip it details everything and have it saved on my phone so I know who, where and when etc but anything I’d need in an emergency I take in paper form as well. The west highland way is a good training exercise due to that stretch along Loch Lomond having no obvious ways out, if your going to do say the cape wrath trail this type of preparation is essential. I’ll keep watching as I want to see how you get on with Dan’s tent before I plump for the dcf pro 👍

@@SteveSmith-67 Ah good tip, I've not looked at Andrew Skurka's content. I've just had a Google and it looks great, I will check that out. 👍 I would love to do the Cape Wraith trail one day, but I'm far from being ready for that one. I plan to get more well trodden long distance hikes under my belt before tackling that. I do plan on doing a little review on the X-Mid at some point, but I am loving it. It's my go to tent and you won't be disappointed in the purchase I'm sure.

really good advice - on day 4, when we wrongly calculated the extra hike time after staying at Ardlui, I was losing it as we reached Crianlarich with another 10 km to walk, and wanted a train or taxi or a stork to get me out of there...ended up making it to Tyndrum but day 4 was a brutal day!

I'm sorry you got sick, but this has nothing whatsoever to do with a Durston (or any) tent. Very misleading header.

Fair point mate. I didn't intend for it be misleading in any way. The point of putting the tent name in the title is for people searching for it and using it on the WHW. I've altered the title ever so slightly so hopefully it doesn't come across as misleading.
