Thankyou for being that photographer. I love that you explain your bias and give real side by side comparisons with real world scenarios in mind. One of the more transparent channels on YT.
2 things that have me thinking about switching to Wescott fj400… 1: For sports action portraits the Wescott recycles way faster. So you can do 10 photo bursts. It’s better than godox and even profoto. (Watch John Quartz comparison) 2: You can plug it into the wall and use it on AC. No adapter needed.
Thank you for this comment! Your comment about the recycle time is the deciding point for me. I do a lot of dance photography. I'll look up John Quartz video next!
For sports action, it's depend of the sport you want to shoot. If you need to freeze action, the Godox is really better (take a better look at their flash durations). If you only need to shoot faster, it also depend of the recycle time that you need (it's decrease with the output you're using). But it's true that at full power, 0.9s by far better than 2.3s. The Godox AD400Pro is also a very fast strobe, but with shorter flash durations.
I'm researching portable strobes for outdoor use, as I no longer have studio space. I'm looking at the Westcott, and this video was very informative for me. Thanks!
Your videos make it clear that you understand lighting and it’s interesting that these two lights are basically the same. In a world where rebranding happens a lot it’s good to know where alternatives exist. I use Godox flashes (V860ii) and honestly I love them. I’ve used camera brand flashes in the past and these days there’s no need to pay marque premium prices. I have more of a mish-mash of video lights however, but the Godox again are strong contenders. Now all I need to do is up my composition game to match the camera gear I have 😊
Hi Marcus! I have the Westcott FJ-400 with the universal trigger because hubby uses Canon and I'm Nikon but that's not the point. I watched this video AND your video on reflectors. THANK YOU! The Leftfoto plus the Gogox defuser does increase the output by about 2 stops and I'm thrilled. Thank you for all your hard work and excellent information.
It's amazing how a simple thing like a reflector can make a world of difference. Thanks for another great vid and good luck to whomever wins the flashes.
It never ceases to amaze me how many items, whether studio strobes of cordless power drills are made by the same over seas manufacturer with just a few tweaks to color and secondary components.
Ha, this was brilliant. I love that no one else has pointed this out. I always figured the Wescott 400 was smaller never seeing one in person. Don’t know why but this was super entertaining for me.
Good comparison, thanks! You may have saved me with that high-speed sync info, since that's entirely what I need it for. Fuji GFX sync speed is only 1/125th sec, so for outdoor beauty dish use with apertures that product bokeh, I'm going to need HSS.
Thank you for sharing this!! I just tried Wescott FJ400 in HSS with Canon EOS R3 / Electronic 1st Curtain shutter & it is unusable as you demonstrated, with Mechanical shutter mode is ok. Oddly enough FJ 200 is better in HSS mode with Electronic 1st curtain...
Another great video to keep us on our toes about marketing. Reminds me of the video lights video you did a while back. Keep creating and sharing your knowledge brother!
Would love to see you compare the Godox AD400Pro vs AD600, focusing on the importance of the differences in their light output, color stability feature, and refresh time in real world photography scenarios like weddings and portraits.
THose plastic diffuser tabs break often, so I switched to sock style, would love to see such a test!! Always enjoy your videos!! Read outs on back I like but use those Godox 600s and 200s
In the market for a large flash. Deciding between 400, 600bm, and 600pro. I knew you had a vid on these flashes. Gonna get me a AD600BM now after watching your video.
Our local camera store sells both Westcott and Godox. The Westcott rep has been to the store several times for shows and classes. He says that the Westcott flash output is cleaner in terms of color cast, and that the Godox has a color cast. I've heard customers say this also but I have not seen it in my shoots, which is all Godox. The manager of the store puts it this way - Godox is good but Westcott is a step up. With Godox you will likely have to do more processing to take away a color cast. Any comment on this? Have you compared the color output of these two flashes? Many thanks, Joe.
I use to wonder and languish over the problems with "Cookie-Cutter" products. SO I really enjoyed your thoughts on these two flash strobe's Mr Markus, thanks!
Firstly - you realise that Westcott don’t manufacture this product - it’s a rebadged Jinbei HD400. The big advantage of the Jinbei/Westcott is that the battery can also be used with mains too.
Thank you for your video, Markus! We sold all our Profoto B1 strobes and A1, but we retained our light modifiers. I would like to adapt our Profoto soft boxes (with Profoto Speed-rings), Beauty Dish, Barn Doors, and Snoot with a FJ400 or, possibly the Godox unit. Unfortunately, all I can find are adapters to add other modifiers to Profoto strobes but nothing to add Profoto modifiers to Westcott. Today, I called Adorama and Westcott. I got the same answers - nothing to adapt Profoto to Westcott. Do you know of any adapter(s) available or would I be better off selling the Profoto modifiers and buying new? I really liked that the FJ-X3 trigger can be used across different camera manufacturers. Will horizontal lines appear for those using Nikon Z7 II or Z9? Thank you!
You want a profoto to Bowens mount... Westcott among others use the standard Bowens mounts.... I do believe some of the profoto accessories are not compatible. I only use the RFI line of soft boxes so I am not sure about the other accessories... I used a Profoto Rfi to Bowens speed ring not cheap but it works great....
@@cafellemusic3295 They have supposedly “tweaked” the software, but other than the visuals they are essentially the same. What Westcott do provide however from what I understand is excellent customer service.
thank you. Excellent video. I was just looking for a battery light to take with me. Packing a generator and cords and setting up lighting really limits where i can shoot.
@@MarkusPix I bought some cheap Godox 400w mono lights and some places I don't have electricity. So, I would bring the generator and rare occasions. Like when I had a friend's son getting married out in the sticks where they first met. I needed the generator then. I live in Washington state. Sometimes i can be pretty dark out from overcast.
Hi Markus ! I happened to have bought Your much behated Godox 600 pro 🙂 I have read some place on the internet, that its not as bright as Your 600 model, and it was speculated if it had something to do with the reflector. Seeing Your video that seems to point in that direction. Do You have any idea how much improvement i can get, putting on that new reflector You showed ? Greetings from a small town right north of the German border 🙂
Yes the new style reflector is stupid, that's the main reason. Get one of the old style reflectors and you'll double the output. They use those stupid new style reflectors on everything now- the AD300, 400, FJ400 etc which makes no sense. I guess they figured compact size was more important than light output.
Hi Markus, Have you tried the EOS-M with the new Magic Lantern "Crop Mood" yet? It is pretty awesome. I think it has the C100 and C300 look to it. I can record in 4k and export it to 1080p and it looks perfect. Better than recording in 1080p mode.
I find it funny that everyone gets so caught up in the watt power in the name. 400 watts has nothing to do with the output, that's just telling us how much power it takes to charge a full power flash. I've seen 250 watt strobes give off the same amount of light as a 400 watt strobe.
That is really interesting. Thanks for always just being brutally honest with the reviews. I am looking to put lights in my new studio set up. Fingers crossed for the giveaway!!!! 🤞🤞😀 Thanks again!!!! #respect!!!👊
I'm choosing the Westcott hopefully soon, I have the Sony a iv and have turned off e-rear shutter thank you for pointing out a big problem I would of encountered.
Have you checked out Celestial from Paul C Buff. it's an American made product. back when I had a studio before my xwife took it all. I hade two of there White Lightning lights and there external power pack Vagabond and it was great. the now have there Celestial light and Link are there battery / AC powered units.
Maybe the 600 is really the 400. Test the PCB Celestial, which is 500 watt seconds true rated, it comes in brighter than the AD600 no reflector vs no reflector.
Another great video!!! 🔥 You are right, no other RU-vidr is talking about the size of the fj400. I would definitely buy the Godox 600bm instead and because of the 265g difference. That's crazy! Don't care for the side screen on either strobe. Once I have set the channel and HSS I never look at it on my ad200.
I like Godox, they have a good system of lghts. I don't know if other cameras have this, but with my Canon R5 and the Godox X2T trigger I can change the flash settings in the camera menu. I don't need to touch the trigger. To make it quick to access I set my DOF button to the flash menu. I just press the DOF button and my flash menu is on the screen and I can change the flash settings. Your Westcott give away sounds tempting but I'll wait for your Godox give away. Thanks again for your videos.
I owned both lights, when it comes to recycling time, wescott never disappoint and more reliable and more faster than godox. If you have camera that has very nice white balance or good color science, you will love wescott fj400 light some bcs it looks more cleaner than godox, but if you use a camera light sony with less color science, godox will be very good for you bcs it tends towards cooler color. From my own user experience, wescott kills godox in overall comparison, am not capping
The westcot is a Chinese company called JINBEI. This company JINBEI produces the modifiers that they sell like the Lindsay Addler spot light and others.
The Westcott light is made by Jinbei Photographic Equipment and has no relation whatsoever to Godox. The similarities are only skin deep. Otherwise a good video.
Yahoo I don’t know if you even know how good a salesman you are. You have sold me almost everything you show us for the last 2 years and your not trying to sell, your only trying to help us, and I am 10 times the photographer I was before I found your channel,
A great and worthy "Royal" comparison! You've answered my internal burning questions of each. Seems Godox is the way. Not going to turn down a chance to win some Westcott lights though!
They don't compare the FJ400 to an AD600 because it is 400W/s while the AD600 is a 600W/s monolight; it's in the name. It is literally not the same light and the power output is also different only similarity is the size and design (which isn't even that similar)
They are almost the same size and weight. If the Westcott only had the same output as a Godox 400, then it would be too annoyingly big, bulky and heavy, but since the light output is way more than the Godox and more similar to the 600, hence this video.
