My family and I were fortunate to be given a tour of this incredible ship by Captain Paul at Moss Landing California today. Beautiful! I felt excited to feel the history benighted my feet. I was told that it was fitted with a diesel and electric engine. I should have asked what the purpose of the electric engine was used for. Thanks to Don Kohrs for his introduction to Captain Paul. It was a wonderful experience.
The line of these old wood fishing boats is classic. They are appealing to the eye. They feel different compared to a metal or a glass boat. They move and flex water. I watched the project while I was home sick. This is a great crew of shipwrights. This is a great project I wish more of these boats could be saved and used in a similar way as what is planned for the Western Flyer. To have a fleet of these boat up and down the coast being used for education would be great.
preserving and saving the lines of such a magnificent Vessel is so worthwhile ! she really is a good looking boat and with her added Maritime history makes it more special as the old saying goes they just don’t make em like that anymore i’ve been a boater my whole life and i was a professional Woodworker for over 20;years boats in general have lost part of their charm and performance by using other materials to build them nothing beats the ride of a Wood boat as the two of nature’s greatest items Wood and the Ocean blend together to make something great !
Great to see this happening! I've been out to see the boat twice, once when its doom seemed imminent, and once when it had been pulled inside for work, but not much had happened yet. I can't wait to go to the open house next week! Ed Ricketts helped to create the science of ecology, and the Western Flyer had a big role in his work. I'm so glad to see the boat will be used to train scientists (and shipwrights, and literary fans, and historians). Yes it might have been cheaper to build it anew, but it wouldn't have the same value and draw. The restoration is a big part of the story.
Beautiful documentary. I truly enjoyed it. We need more of this. And what I mean by more of this are we good I would help with resurrecting the Arizona. Reality that is a war grave but honored the young men who passed on this beautiful Legend Odyssey cut down in her prime. But we all know this will never happen because it is a grave. So I can we couldn't build a new Arizona and honor of these young men. But build it out of wood on a smaller version. Wood boats are a Dying Breed and it's only because we have become a throwaway Society which is sad to see. Long live the Wooden Boat of yesteryear and the present.
I remember cruising by here in my boat, sailed out of la Connor. Seen her sinking i always wanted to know her story. Bring her back. We need to see touch and smell the history. She is beautiful.
Where Kevin Bailey is standing is where the Western Flyer 99% complete is moored this evening. She is tied to the West Wall at Fisherman’s Terminal. I just walked over and admired her gleaming paint and amazing wood work. A far cry from her condition in this video.
Wow what a. Story many people may not understand but i totally get it she is a Classic and her lines Are Awesome If circumstances were different for me i. Would be there to help you guys fulfilling the dreams Just to be a physical part unfortunately ive suffered. A Traumatic Brain Injury a few years ago and my current health wont allow me best. Of luck to everyone involved its a wonderful project and hopefully the young people take Advantage of a once in a lifetime oppurtunity
I can’t address the waste of time. Each person is given a certain amount of time to be on this earth. Isn’t it up to each person to use their time as they best see fit? As for waste of money - does the complainer think they are papering the interior of the boat with $100 bills? They are using the money to pay skilled craftsmen, who are using their pay to support grocery stores, tool sellers, car dealers, clothing stores, 16yr old baby sitters, and uncounted others. I’d hardly say that’s wasted money. They’re using the money to purchase supplies and wood needed for restoring the boat, supporting businesses near and far thus making it possible for those businesses to pay their employees, who are using the money in all sorts of ways. I’d hardly call that wasted money either. And then there is the historical aspect... The short sight of some people amazes me.
How was the original western flyer powered? Plesase advise thankyou where can I find this information I can not find much about the boat as built dalehjanssen in Arizona I would come see the boat because I am a stroke survivor and handicapped
When you learn that a "boat" is a legal entity... it has been incurring debts, be it moorage, storage, care taking, security, port charges and the list of items go on and on... history has a price... so glad to see this preservation... KUDOS!
I could hardly believe the chap stating that "ocean acidification" was to be studied (not to forget "global warming"). I wonder if he's ever heard of pH and what it means. Let's hope this boat does not fall into the hands of such "scientists". She deserves a far better future.
about 1000 Years the climate will have made at least a 50 temperature changes and back to what it really is today around +20 degrees increase in some places and a 20 degrees -minus in other place because of not what man is doing but what the sun is doing and Earth's magnetic field changes the Earth also has a tilt in it rotation sometime we can measure it over a period of months and years between the Sun and other planets by calculations of positions a 1/4 degree tilt can change temperature by .4 degrees over 10 years and up to 1 degree hotter in places that say used to be a maximum of 80 degrees is all of a sudden 96 degrees for several days sometimes weeks, then every green person on earth says it is global warming pollution causing the hot days of summer to be hotter, not true If you take a close look at Albert Einstein theory of motion of masses you can see that the Earth/Sun/moon work not always to gather but fight each others MASSES effects on the physics of the tilt of the Earth the pulling of the Moon and the radiation of the sun affects Climate Change here on Earth more than Man ever could in fact without man the Earth would still be faced with Great Climate variations each decade no more or no less effect would happen until we lost our magnetic Field then all hell could close the door on Human's or life at all left on earth.
