Odysseus says "this is the last thing we have to do to get home" a couple times throughout the musical. He says their journey will be over after killing the cyclops, and he calls the storm his final fight. Which I feel could either be him believing that it will be smooth sailing after they're done, or, like telling himself and his crew what he has to in order to be able to keep pushing forward. Like, "if I focus on all I have to do I will never be able to move, so I'm going to tell myself that this is the last thing that I have to do, one thing at a time."

Fun fact! In the Odyssey they refer to this island as a floating island. Jorge took that literally as an island floating in the sky. However, as he later found out, what the Odyssey was really referring to was an island that isn't connected to a body of water's floor and just floats around, usually naturally made of plants or pumice or manmade, often with woven reeds. So the island in the sky became an Epic the Musical easter egg, to those who know.

About depictions of characters in animatics: it's a common practice for musical animatics to use the actors' likeness as the baseline for character design, as you would see it on stage. People tweek it however suits their artstyle, but usually you find a lot of resemblance
Except for polites everyone has just unanimously agreed he has medium hair, glasses, and a headband. Doesn’t really look like Steven but I think it matches politeses vibe

HE CAUGHT THE BRASS MOTIF. I love that. A lot of people don't seem to make the connection after it's revealed whose motif it is. In this, it's signifying who's responsible for the storm.
That was some really clever gas-lighting to make sure that he's surprised when Poseidon comes. "Mm, yes, Poseidon probably will be in the musical, but _we_ don't know what act or saga he's gonna appear in" Nice save lol
I might be reading too much into the animatic of this, but when Odysseus throws the harpoon, he is the only one who actually knows how to throw it correctly, as opposed to the crew. Probably because he got mentoring from Athena. I love this detail if it is correct.
Little tip for when you guys get to the Underworld saga, gigi released their animatic for the song Monster, and I highly recommend watching it when you eventually react to that particular song.
The trumpets are such a good addition. because they really DO herald the arrival of someone important. Poseidon himself. The god of storms. It was foreshadowing all along!
For the character designs in the animatics: Sometimes, the character design is based off of the voice actors/singers. Like Polites and Ody. They are based off their singers with certain traits like ody's hair style and Polites glasses, etc. Eurylocus' design. Mainly based off of the singers with tweaks and edits with each animators art style.
I'm actually kinda excited for the one song per because then you can speak more in depth! For underworld - will you have the animatics if available? I know we forced you a bit early to react 😂🙈
Honestly, please PLEASE drag it out as much as you can. Im being so serious, ive been spoiled by other media and Im already so starved for Epic content and I cant cope with the fact that act 2 is probably going to be a while. Right now, you guys are my only light in this endless abyss
A lot of storyboard artists do also reference the voice actors’ appearances in addition to drawing inspiration from each other. For instance, a number of artists DO give Polites glasses because of his actor, which drives my OCD tendencies just a little bit nuts because glasses wouldn’t exist for another two millennia.
@@hel117I’m not diagnosed but I do have tendencies, and I’m a writer who graduated with a degree in animation, so I don’t think a lack of suspension of disbelief is the problem. It drives me a little bonkers when folks don’t do their research and make arbitrary aesthetic decisions that are actively contrary to the worldbuilding they’re trying to create. It’s not a suspension of disbelief, it’s a breaking of IMMERSION, which is the responsibility of the creator, not the audience. You can’t set up your worldbuilding, setting, and time period seriously, then completely break it just because you feel like it and expect the audience to “suspend their disbelief” when it was your inconsistencies that broke their immersion. I feel the same way about modern swearing in Game of Thrones and modern dialogue in just about any serious period piece, fantasy or otherwise. It’d be like if Frodo pulled out a smartphone and asked Google Maps to get him to Mt. Doom. It’s a storyteller’s job to set up the laws of the story’s world, and it’s that storyteller’s responsibility to operate WITHIN those boundaries. When you break the rules that you created, you risk coming across as inexperienced, ignorant, or apathetic to your audience.
@@cosmicbreath But it's not necessarily "contrary to the worldbuilding they are trying to create" or "Breaking the rules they created", it's breaking the rules you personally think should be there, which is a very different thing. It is not "apathetic to their audience" if a creator does not cater to your personal tastes- it just means that you are probably not their intended audience. A modern reinterpretation of a classic such as Epic, or certainly any of the animatics created of it, is never going to be historically accurate, not really, creators have to pick and choose their language (it is simply not possible to write in a fantasy or historical setting and not have anachronistic language, at least if you want it to be intelligible to a modern-Tolkien audience. Even Tolkien didn't publish his works fully in elvish), along with their aesthetic choices, to cater to their modern audience. It's fine if you don't like their choices, but it's not a sin or a slight on their part, it's a difference in taste.
@@hel117 Hoo boy. I’m not talking about Epic in general, I LOVE Epic. I’m talking about artists putting eyeglasses on Polites just because his voice actor has glasses. It’s a detail that bothers me personally, see my comment about OCD tendencies. If the artists give us historically accurate settings and costumes to Greek history, we as the audience are operating under the assumption that that’s the kind of world we’re set in, nothing else about the visuals communicates that this takes place in anything but Ancient Greece. So for the rest of that world to be historically accurate except this ONE THING that has no story or cultural significance but is just done “because the artist wants to” breaks immersion for me. I was simply explaining WHY it bothered me from the perspective of a writer and artist who happens to have OCD tendencies. And I’m allowed to be critical of things I love. Me criticizing a detail doesn’t mean I hate something or “it wasn’t made for me,” I’m not that stodgy. I’m not required to think the things I love are perfect. Most of my favorite things have problems. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King are two of my favorite Disney films, but the former makes an Eiffel Tower reference when the Eiffel Tower wouldn’t be built for another 100 years, and the Lion King has a hula gag that makes no sense to why the character would have any idea what hula is. The LOTR films and books I ADORE, but the films spend an annoying amount of minutes on Arwen going over the same plot points with Aragorn over and over again, when their love story was relegated to the book’s appendices, and Faramir and Eowyn get 30 seconds in the extended where the got a whole chunk of a chapter in the book that I frankly found more engaging. And the book is long winded and prone to rabbit trails that bloat the story and sometimes interrupt the mood. My favorite animes have pacing issues, unnecessary episodes, and rushed endings. But they’re still my favorites. Just because Polites having glasses drives me a little bit nuts doesn’t mean I hate the work of the storyboard artist that made it. Ximena’s animatic of a certain particular song in a saga later on is my singular FAVORITE ONE of that song. Ximena’s sense of movement and cinematography in general is FANTASTIC. I do think this animatic is rendered a little too dark and makes it harder to see, and it just drives me a little bit bonkers that a number of artists are so attached to the VA’s that they alter the appearance to match the VA so much that now glasses exist in what we are supposed to believe is Homer’s 700-something BC Greece. But the only thing I’ve mentioned that I actually DON’T like is Game of Thrones.

When you hear someone drop the F Bomb, regardless of if it's a modern setting or a setting like Epic, I can PROMISE YOU that the words have been around a lot longer than you think. Also, read the A Song of Ice and Fire books, Seasons 1 through, like, 5 are almost exactly word for word from the book series
I do suggest you pair up multiple songs on a video if its... tied? Like polyhemus and survive together or the horse and the infant and just a man, cause some songs would feel a bit jarring without the second hand in hand part

The trumpets you hear in Storm are from Poseidon, trumpets are his instrument, it is a way to show that this specific storm comes from Poseidon, later on Ruthlessness you hear in one part of Poseidon's lyrics a trumpet coping the 'sto-o-o-oorm' from Storm

The trumpets during the storm is symbolizing Poseidon since he is causing the storm preventing them from getting home. Kinda similar to the way you hear the piano for Athena even when she isn't explicitly present in the song/video. You hear the trumpets again during Ruthlessness.
19:00 - Most of the character appearances for the main characters are, by and large, based on the vocalists' appearances. Jorge and the other cast members put out clips of scenes for many of these songs, so especially Odysseus, Eurylochus, and Polites are based on Jorge, Armando, and Steven respectively. Some of the Gods are more stylized but H--- and Athena are usually pretty on point. Jorge when he's being goofy and Jorge when he's acting AS Odysseus actually come off very different and once you watch more of his content you can totally see the vibe difference and more of the similarities lol. Also, the animatics he specifically commissions, he usually has anime references as well as his own facial acting references lol

This is the beginning of the rift between Eurylochus & Odysseus (at least from Eurylochus' side) Notice how all but 1 (arguably 2) of his lines are him questioning, doubting, or disagreeing with Odysseus "Captain we will capsize/our fleet will fail" "We're taking to much damage to survive" "At this rate we wont make it out" "What?" Each of those is challenging Odysseus' claims that he can get them through the storm AND he never responds to a direct order from Odysseus Odysseus tells Eury "Have them follow my ship [etc]" And we get NO verbal response from Eurylochus Eurylochus is NOT happy with Odysseus' choices here, & it starts to boil over in LRO, but it _starts_ here

Yes, otherwise the videos were over an hour long 😭 but don’t worry, keep your friends close and ruthlessness are coming on Wednesday, we’re not gonna pad them out by a whole week; only 2 days. So for ocean, Circe, and underworld, you’ll still be getting the whole saga in the same week (a 2-3 day span, max), just not in the same day
I had a really long comment for y'all but RU-vid is a broken piece of crap lately so it ended up on the wrong video and wouldn't let me copy it, and I do not have it in my to try and make it again. To summarize though, onc e video at a time is great because I love you two analyzing things and it actually gives enough time for you to get everything you want to say discussed. Keep it up and I hope you can do other things too asking with Epic.
I really hope you guys use or have used Ximena Natzel's animation for the second song in final saga as well, Theirs and Gigis animatic for that saga really nail what (at least I heard) in such a beautiful visual I really would love to see your takes on them

Well, it is worth mentioning that Casper and I will always have our videos premiere one after the other. So even though it’s one song per “video” it is still two songs per upload slot! So when we get o Circe saga next week, Done For and There Are Other Ways will still premiere and be uploaded in very quick succession, even if they’re technically two different videos
The animators seem to always depict the characters as the actors. Mircsy is impressive with it. I can't recall for certain if the animatic I'm thinking of is Mircsy, but Polites WAS Steven Dookie. Like, nearly exact, and only "nearly" because colors. 😂
But Odysseus does get floaty again just a smidge when sommoning Aeolas cause of what he picked up.from.polites but the chest voice is there more than in the horse and the infabt and just a man
