"The Whipping Man" by Matthew Lopez embodies the lives of three men confined in an abandoned home during World War II. Caleb Deleon, and two former slaves Simon and John. In this particular monologue John expresses his full range of raw emotion when he relives the traumatic experience of being sent to The Whipping Man as a young boy. Quenched and starved of love all of his anger builds up during this monologue as we see the suppressed feelings that have haunted his life since that particular day.
