If this vlog were exclusively about the liquor, it wouldn't appeal to me as much. It's the dynamic of two very different individuals, you, Daniel, enthused, informed, and eager to describe the bottle at issue, often with some history of its origin, and T-Rex, cognizant that too much detail can wear on your viewers, providing a lackadaisical impression of the first few sips with humorous comparisons and scenarios.
A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, Doctor, doctor, I can’t feel my legs!” The doctor replied, “I know you can’t I’ve cut off your arms!”
I've taken a lot of advise from these two! Heaven Hill is definitely near the top for my flavor profile and ELIJAH CRAIG is was up there too. Great review and breakdown y'all
Elijah Craig was my first Bourbon love. Haven't tried it since they changed to NAS, but not as a form of protest. Just because I've been trying new things. I'm sure it's still great and a great bargain. Plus, I love the acetone/shoe polish note that I get with the EC. That being said, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is one of the best bourbons I've ever tried. Great review.
At 38 years old I’ve been drinking bourbon for 24 years. They start us young here on the bayou. Elijah Craig has been my go to bourbon for the past year. I went through the port finished phase. I’ve tried everything from old charter to Pappy van winkle. Elijah Craig, to me, just epitomizes everything a bourbon should be.
I just worked my way through a bottle of Elijah Craig small batch. What tasted balanced at first, ended up a little too sweet. They could reduce the sweetness by half and it would be ideal. It affirms, once again, that long term drinking is much more reliable than the sniff and snort sampling we get in reviews. The irony with the EC small batch, is that it does not fit the taste profile of the E.C. high end bourbons, which tend to be oakey and very neutral/dry.
New to Bourbons. So far bought Four Roses yellow label(nope...) and Buffalo Trace, Larceny, and Elijah Craig that I really like. The Elijah Craig is especially good.
Right here with me I still got the 12. The cork isn’t exactly airtight which tells me I should finish it sooner rather than later, but I just love the smell when it leaks into my hands then I’d just cover my nose and face with my hands and breathe..
Love your shows. The only thing that would make it better is if you gave a time stamp that told us when the chatter stopped and the whiskey talk began. As it is it's hard to click through the video and find the good part.
The king of hell Crowley, from supernatural. "Don't even bother drinking, unless it's Craig" I love this bourbon! Great flavor, excellent price. High end whiskey at low end prices. I brush my teeth prior to tasting whiskey. I find that I can taste every note of the whiskey if I brush my teeth first. I know, it's weird, but I won't drink whiskey without brushing my teeth first. Thoughts?
Mingling of 8-12 year old barrels. Small batch around 200 (or fewer) barrels. Great everyday bourbon neat, rocks or in a classic cocktail! Barrel proof is all 12 year old juice. Cheers
I just bought my second bottle after a few years of trying different whiskeys. Elijah Craig has held true to my first evaluation of a good whiskey to keep on shelf alongside Buffalo Trace. Hopefully, these won’t become as hard to find as my other favorites.
As a noob starting for the first time I got knob creek rye and elija Craig small batch bourbon. Though I know they are way different. They smelled the same at first. But going back and forth I started to pick up on brown sugar and vanilla/ maple notes in the nose and it was drastic. It caught me off guard.
After binge watching this show all day I've come to realize just how poor my taste in whisk(e)y is. I need to get myself some good whiskey. What would you recommend as a good entry whiskey for someone wanting to appreciate some of the better whiskeys out there?
Hmmm. It depends on why you classify yourself as "poor whisky taste". What do you like? I have only found a handful of whisky that I truly disliked, and some of the cheapest ones are often awesome.
I've mostly had your standard super market bourbons and only mildly enjoyed them. Jim Beam and the like. Beam specifically I found to be a bit overpowering at first. I wouldn't say harsh, but not easy or particularly smooth. Now I am fully aware that part of this can be attributed to the fact that I am very inexperienced in the realm of whiskey and I don't have the palette or the experience to pick out more than a few things in any given whiskey. When it comes to beer I'm a fan of pale ales and IPAs if that gives you anything to go on when it comes to recommending a whiskey. Thanks for the help, really enjoy The Vault. Keep up the awesome work guys.
An easier cheap whiskey I'd recommend is Jim Beam black label, or maybe try an Irish whiskey first to get your feet wet, like Jameson/Jameson Caskmates. Super smooth.
If you find Beam too harsh, perhaps you are not accustomed to the strong wood in Bourbons. If that is the case, whiskey matured in second fill barrels might be more to your liking. Perhaps a sherry forward Scotch like Balvenie Doublewood 12 or Glendronach 12. If you don't want something that is so fruity and sherry forward but still has a smooth finish similar to a salted caramel and some tea, Bunnahabhain 12 is a great place to start. Also, Daniel turned me onto Teeling Irish Whiskey and it is a dram to savor. Good luck!
Hello you magnificent bastards! just got this whiskey available to us here in Newfoundland Canada in the past year or so ( i know we dont get much selection up here for some stupid fucking reason) but big fan of your vids and im a mooch at heart as well lmao. Love the fact that im actually drinking a dram of this exact whiskey while you guys talk about it. Cheers guys!
So this Elijah Craig Small Batch has been reviewed by you guys multiple times through the years. Is this the same small batch every time? Or is it a different variation of EC each time since it is a small batch? Other feel free to chime in!
Damn I just finished this same bottle(750ml) in 2 days.... is that too much for am I semi normal? I don't want to consider myself an alcoholic, I'm very stressed so I'm a heavyweight and love whiskey.Great channel by the way I follow every vid!! Thanks!
Yeah, may want to slow down on that. It should take at least a week to finish off a bottle of you're staying healthy in your consumption amounts. Preferably two weeks
During the last 10-15 years, I've been slowly turning into a bourbon snob. Elijah Craig Small Batch is the best I've tried so far. Yeah, I'm sure there is better, but I drink so infrequently that it takes about a year for me to go through a bottle. Any recommendations for what to try next?
Had to come back to this video because I was at the bar after drinking a Manhattan and figured I would try out this bourbon on the nose I actually got caramel notes which I've never smelt before and I'm pretty excited to be smelling this for the 1st time
I don't think it's nearly as good without the age statement. Personally, Elijah Craig was a "go-to" bourbon for me. You could get it anywhere and it was somewhat of an oddity at that price considering how good it was. They've added 8-yr old barrels now and it's just not the same. I bought a case of the stuff when I found out they were doing it and I'm hoarding it like some Pappy Van Winkle!
Chocking on whisky might not be the worst way to go, but I plan on staying alive for some time still. I did like the slight change of camera angle - Seems to give a better perspective on where you are, rather than staring at the unending "whiskywall". I'm not so sure that the Rex-love-heart thing will get you the increase in subscribers your looking for...? I might be wrong though.
I thought your description of who you would send to get this was a little too accurate. I just picked out EC at random today from the store as my first bourbon. I normally only drink Irish whiskeys and some Scotches. I tried it while watching your review and I am very surprised that I like EC more than my go to Irish whiskeys.
I'm going to be opening my first bottle of EC tonight. Still consider myself new to bourbon. So far of the 4-5 others I've tried my favourite has been Woodford Reserve. Thanks for this channel, it is my go-to for whisky reviews.
I agree, this is the channel to go to, to find out what Whiskey to get next! I just got in to Whiskey during the COVID19 Pandemic and I've tried about 17 different bourbons, 3 Tennessee Whiskeys and 1 scotch so far and this channel is my go to first before I make my purchase!
I love the reviews, recommendations, and the back-and-forth. Daniel, am I to understand that EC12 is now released as EC Small Batch? Also, I'd love to see a review of Four Roses - Yellow Label, Small Batch, & Single Barrel (trying to help you out, Rex!). How do they differ & what's the deal with all the different Four Roses recipes? If you've already done this please disregard my comment. I'll get caught up eventually! One last note - Rex, learn to embrace the spreadsheet!
BTW, I picked up a bottle of Green Spot over the weekend & love it! I'd say keep it coming, but this could get expensive! I clearly need to take more notes from Rex!
I just bought a bottle because of all the good reviews but I found this to have an almost non-existent nose. No burn on the finish. Even though it is 47% I found this to be "less potent" than some 40%-45% whiskeys. They called it friendly and too smooth which is spot on. Perfect starter bourbon. I'll finish the bottle but probably won't buy any more.
Try Ezra Brooks, ( is very good) It has an overpowering nose and a heck of a burn on the finish, It was a good starter bourbon for me but I was looking for something more refined than that or Jim Bean or Evan Williams or Jack or even Makers Mark. The list goes on to include Bullet , Woodford Reserve, and Knob!!!! I think no burn is magical ?????
I'm new to exploring whisk(e)y and recently finished a bottle of Buffalo Trace. I just picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig small batch today. I really enjoy it.
This is Mike R enjoy your crazy clips . Watched the ten best show first. I am a 74 year old man who has always been a JD drinker! After your video Top 10 I went out bought Elijah Graig & Four Roses looking forward to some pleasant evenings! Keep drinking and enjoying!
Just purchased a bottle of the Elijah Craig Small batch. Was previously sipping on Jefferson's Small Batch. Elijah Craig beats the Jefferson's hands down for complexity of taste and flavors. Jefferson's was just too sweet for me.
I bought a bottle of this (Elijah Craig Small Batch) three days ago in order to make a cocktail (gasp!), an Old Fashioned. Didn't like the taste of the bourbon watered down. Tried a shot straight from the bottle. Now I drink it neat, exclusively. Lowball glass. Bottle is already half empty. Go, me!
I remember not liking bourbon having been more of a whiskey, scotch, and rum fan but I'm about to give it another go with Elijah Craig. As I've gotten older I have noticed that I enjoy drinking just a glass of Irish whiskey or scotch over most mixed drinks, with exception to gin. Still enjoy gin, lime, and tonic. Update - Tried the Elijah Craig, loved it.
I am a complete noob to whiskey/bourbon. My nose smells alcohol and musty apples. I think I smell a hint of vanilla or caramel, but too weak to tell the difference. I think I failed the nose test. For me the nose is the same as taste, but the alcohol becomes warmth and the vanilla becomes stronger(not caramel, although the sweetness deceives into thinking caramel). I probably failed the taste test, as well.
Being an avid whiskey, scotch, bourbon drinker, I have to say Elijah Craig did not do it for me. Maybe some people like it, but this has a very earthy/dirt after taste that I did not care for.
You guys are wrong about Elijah Craig, he was the first to use charred oak barrels. It was an accident as he was using old oak barrels that were used to store fish. He burned the barrels to remove the fishy smell. That is actually his claim to fame. It’s written in Kentucky history and in the Kentucky ledger.
I just finished a bottle of this tonight. I agree with the burn going down. And also I agree with the good on ice comment. But I totally preferred it near all said and done. Great video. I enjoy everyone of them. Thank you sirs.
Hey guys. I'm a little late to the party, but enjoying a glass of Single Barrel Elijah Craig while you review this. I'm sure small batch means 10 to 20 barrels blended, so the Single Barrel is basically the same whiskey... I assume. Very enjoyable. Interesting how different it is on the heels of a glass of Hudson baby bourbon. I think I prefer the Elijah Craig over the 100% corn Hudson baby bourbon. Likely the extended time in the barrel that I enjoy.
Likely correct on the age of Hudson. Elijah Craig is technically 200 or less. So there will be some differences from the single barrel. Not fortunate enough to ever see the barrel proof, but maybe one day.
A couple of things. First, this is my absolute favorite bourbon so far! I'm just starting to get into whiskeys, and I've only had bourbons at this point, but god damn this stuff is good. It's my benchmark for good bourbon! It's so friendly and I keep coming back to it, feels like an old friend already! Second thing! Looking for recommendations based on enjoying this so much.
Actually I've tried a few more others that took it's place, but I still really enjoy Elijah Craig though. My current top 3 are: 1. George Dickel No. 12 2. Evan Williams Bottled In Bond 3. Evan Williams Single Barrel
I am just getting into appreciating whiskey instead of chugging it at parties, so I watched your video about beginner whiskies. I decided to take the plunge on this one and I am not disappointed at all. Thanks guys.
Hey me too, lol #metoo I'm about 3 months and 7 or 8 bottles in. Started with some Monkey Shoulder, then Jack and Gentleman Jack, tried the honey jack (ehh) Buffalo Trace, The Glenlivet 12, just got this Elijah Craig today. I was gonna get the Bulliet, but made an audible at the line of scrimmage. I've had the Macallan12 Double Cask in an airplane bottle and it was the best I've had yet. $60 for the 750ml which is on my wish list.
My buddy got me to try EC and at first I wasn't a big fan. My palette is definitely changing and I'm starting to enjoy more than my traditional go to of a single malt.
