Gerard really wanted to make an album of music he never thought would fit for mcr. This includes lyrics, borderline nonsensical, because MCR was meant to be all story, while his solo album was much more laid back. Letting the meaning be found by the listener, if any. Kind of like foo fighters debut. First and foremost the album wants you to dance and have a good time.

brother is not only one of my favorite songs, but it is very important to know the context when listening to it. gerard’s younger brother mikey attempted suicide in 2013, and gerard wrote the song for him to remind him that they still loved him and supported him through everything (mikey overdosed on opioids and gerard struggled with addictions in 2004 and relapsed in 2013 as well, having to go to rehab around the same time as mikey) the opening of brother has a phone call between an operator and gerard, where he says “where is he? where is my baby brother?” and the operator responds with “he killed himself.” gerard has another song about mikey called piano jam which he has only live performances of, but it is absolutely hauntingly beautiful.

As a huge fan of noisy music, I don't really think Brad is being elitist. Maybe it's not a 3/10, but there's definitely better artists doing what Gerard is trying to do. hesitant alien is nostalgic for me for personal reasons but brother specifically hits home real hard. the visuals i get from it are incredible and it might be because i can understand the message and the Vibe on a personal level. this album was his therapy project, not meant to be Good in the critical sense but good for him to make. when i look at it from that angle and imagine the personal experience it's narrating, i can feel a lot more of the depth than if i just listen for things like quality, "lyrical genius", complexity or mastering or whatever. i don't always care about those aspects. but that's just me, music reviews will never be objective and i still watch you cause you're funny as hell even if i disagree. it was still cool to see you take a peek at an album i'm not used to people knowing exists :)

@XRTVicious
@XRTVicious Год назад
Not even, he was listening to Master of Puppets and said that it goes above whatever mood he's in to just being great, and he was in the same mood then as he was for this. He was in the same mood for the recent KoRn album he reviewed as well, which he gave a 6. It's all just his genuine takes, and he does go in depth on a decent amount of stuff when he feels like he can. Not saying the emotions don't totally matter but to act like he reviews solely on emotion isn't quite fair imo.

@evie1919
@evie1919 Год назад
i love this album so much so i was obviously butthurt to hear that brad had like almost zero appreciation towards it but i get it now tbh. its not an album of quality but its like a vibe. its the kind of album you dont pay attention to other than the sound, which i personally thought was very interesting but mostly repetitive. and tbh it was made 8 years ago so some of this stuff was still VERY new and exciting at that point where now its just like... k. and yes the lyrics are absolutely inaudible which, although it does add to the 'pleasant background music' vibe, does not help in terms of quality or understanding meaning. i just think brad mightve been feeling particularly understimulated regardless of what music hed listen to. like one of those days where you cant be satisfied by any music. it is repetitive but not to the point of skipping through the song and hating all of it, yknow? Edit: i will add that the actual meanings (however impossible they are to understand admittedly) are f*cking beautiful so thats an important aspect that probably couldve been more looked into when analyzing this for quality.

I’ve seen Billy Mackenzie accused of writing word salad, and in a certain way thats true, but i feel like this Gerard Way album is ACTUALLY chop-shop-word-salad. Like words are just missing! Or scrambled randomly. I feel like the Associates’ lyrics were always internally coherent. And i think there’s a meaningful distinction between lyrics like theirs and the poetry we see on display here.

Man, you skipped over the 2 best songs! How It's Going To Be and Maya the Psychic (along with Action Cat) are the strongest tracks. But I do agree with you that most of us only listen because it's Gerard. All of the mixing/extra noise/hiding his voice bugs me as well. I hope you can check out one of Frank's bands (from MCR). I really like Stomachaches from frnkiero andthe cellabration. You can add this to your MCR infinity gauntlet!

hi there, how are you doing! If you are planning on sticking to the 90s albums that you have been reviewing, then I highly recommend you checkout Calculating Infinity by the Dillinger Escape Plan. Simply put, its one of the most animalistic and brutal metal albums of the 90s. its highly technical and it fits into the genre of mathcore, but the performances and production is so laser focused on beating the shit out of you that it never comes across as a wank-fest like some of their brethren. anyway, loving the content, and seeing you almost hit 200k is insane! you've totally earned this fat W. anyways, see you next stream

An album that does this noisy sound better is ministry animositisomina it channels that loud sound into actual song writing and uses it to increase the aggression without flooding over the mix

I hope Brad is joking about not being a MCR fan because I could've sworn he actually liked Three Cheers for the most part. Especially after the last track, it clicked, and he said "Oh my god, I get it now". He regards Black Parade as the masterpiece, and he hated Bullets & Danger Days (fair enough). Conventional Weapons wasn't well received either due to the mixing. But I'd say 2 out of 4 studio albums ain't bad. He could likely go to a MCR concert and enjoy it

he *did* go to an mcr show and enjoyed it (sans for the fact that it was riot fest and festival environments suck)

I think it’s just that he’s a Three Cheers and Black Parade fan, not an MCR fan. Which is fair, that’s only 2/4 albums and he doesn’t like any of the b side stuff or this album either.
