That's how Jack likes it I think. He said in some interviews that he likes to push and challenge himself by using guitars that aren't the best, and record on analog tape in order to be proud of his work. Because then he really has to work hard to create something beautiful!

whatever happens happens Nirvana was born out of the seattle scene that was building for a good while, The White Stripes Were born out of the growing detroit scene, Both are super simple, Those are the big ones, Nirvana Had more intensity over all (The stripes have some hard songs but not as much as nirvana) The White Stripes were not as huge as nirvana and influential, The White Stripes didnt really change the whole music scene, Also The stripes didnt really write about angsty things and didnt write sad songs, i could go on and on but those are the simmilarities and differences

This has to be my favorite White Stripes music video. When I first found this it just seemed really fun and random. But now its so eerie. I love how The Stripes really feel like a band that documents childhood. This isnt a song about being in love, its about the empty feeling that lays bare once its gone. As those shadows party, Jack and Meg playfully play piano and sing all the memories just keep coming back, somehow wrecking the place even more. Its ao chaotic, yet depressing and hopeful at the same time. Whenever I see Meg pack up and leave at the end it almost makes me cry. Then the song softly finishes like wiping away tears. there's another day to ge through and clean all that shit up little by little.

I've always been amazed about how they made this, I'm a videographer myself, and when I watch videos, I wonder how they created it. But I never have thought it was that simple! It's a projector! Of course! Michel Gondry is a genius!

I think its a projection on top of another projection, or on top of a screen and then both layers are recorded as a means to "flatten" the layers, the reason why I think it's more than one projection is that it doesn't deform at the corners or angles in the room, so it has to be projected onto a 2d flat surface... I'm an amateur cinematographer myself, Awesome video indeed.

@@ZholGoliath Maybe this is old news by now, but it's actually even simpler than that: The footage is captured from a spot in the room, and then it's projected from the exact same spot, trying to match the lens width as closely as possible (a good way to go about that would be to try to line up the projected room with the real room). Then the perspectives of the room sort of cancel each other out (the beam of the projector is seeing the same room geometry that the camera was seeing when it shot the footage). That's why the room doesn't deform but the characters do. So every "destruction" scene has been shot from the same place from where it gets projected later for Jack's scenes walking around (to get an idea of where that spot is, watch Jack's shadow on the wall; the projector is the primary light source, if not the only one, so the shadow will tell you where it is). It also allows the camera in Jack's scenes to move freely, since you only need to lock the projector in place. Sorry, long comment, I hope you'll find it interesting!

I think that this is the best of Gondry's White Stripes videos. The others were more technically proficient, but this one is far more emotional, and it matches the song particularly well. It conveys a lot of meaning, about the metaphorical and literal definitions of "home wrecker." Meaning is art, more so than technological tricks.

First time I saw this video was on a local tv station that played alternative music videos after midnight on Friday night. Never heard of the White Stripes. Bought White Blood Cells the next day. One of my favorite albums of all time. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago.

Video always stayed with me and reminds me of London in the early 2000’s. The superimposed memories as he comes home late from a trip to a destroyed English bed sit after a betrayal by a lover brings back memories.

Man this band was so refreshing when it came out, he hits a few iffy notes opening the verse and releases it like a healthy happy musician who knows that the song has heart. At the time in the mainstream, even in "punk", it seemed everything was perfected as much as possible.

I have all their records, seen them live and have been a fan for 20+ years. I can't believe this is the first time I ever seen this music video. Dunno how I missed it. I think 2001 was in that "stopped watching TV but youtube hadn't arrived yet period".

I saw The White Stripes three times and the first time I just stood there in complete shock as to how bizarrely brilliant they were. Second and third times were pretty much the same. This live was nothing short of astonishing.
