It's not a sequencer It's a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ using its marimba repeat feature. The modal approach used for the synthesizer track was inspired by the work of minimalist composer Terry Riley. Pete Townshend, a member of The Who, was one of the first and most creative users of synthesizers in rock. He used the ARP 2500 on the song "Won't Get Fooled Again" from the album Who's Next.

Especially their work up to this point (1971), although there's great stuff right up to 1978, when Keith Moon died. Also: greatest live act in rock. Whatever your feelings about the song itself, it has to be acknowledged that it is one of the most bizarrely original, out of nowhere, songs ever. This one along with others on the album has Pete doing things with synthesizers and sequencers that nobody was doing at the time. This was in middle of one of those extraordinary hot creative streaks true geniuses have from time to time that ran from Tommy through Quadrophenia.

I saw the "Who's Next" tour at Cobo Hall in Detroit. One thing for which The Who were famous was playing really LOUD!!. It was a fabulous concert, not only the music, but also the stage antics of the band, put together to entertain fans in those arenas seated way up in the back of the balcony at the rear of the arena. Which was where I was seated. I think it was a third balcony. It was a Friday or Saturday concert, and my hearing didn't return to anything near normal until the following Wednesday. You not only heard the music of The Who back then, you felt it in your chest, and in the vibrations of the floor underneath your feet.

The Who have so many great songs, most with high production aspects, but my favorites come from their earlier live performances. I probably mentioned this when Nick reacted to this song before, but it's worth repeating for Alexia. After 9/11, Paul McCartney organized a concert for New York City to benefit the Robin Hood society, and as a thank you to all the First Responders, who were admitted free and given free beer. The Who were the first to say yes, and at the concert on October 20th 2001, they played a 30-minute set that was terrific. It turned out to be the last time they would perform with John Entwistle, their bass player, as he passed away in 2002. In 2008, The Who received the Kennedy Center Award, which was the first time the award was given to a musical group. Four of their songs were performed by famous artists, the last being "Baba O'Riley", performed by Rob Thomas. As the Teenage Wasteland section began, the back of the stage opened to a large group of New York City firefighters and police officers singing "teenage wasteland, it's only teenage wasteland," and Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry were moved to tears. It was beautiful. I'm glad Lex got to hear this one with headphones, but sometime, (maybe when the neighbors aren't around!) put on this one and "Won't Get Fooled Again" and crank it up for the full effect of these epic Brit rockers!! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie P.S. I miss your warm brown eyes, Lex!

I also agree with the other two Letter B songs off one of my very favorite albums, Who's Next....Bargain and Behind Blue Eyes. Other popular songs include Who Are You and some fun stuff from Tommy like Listening To You; Amazing Journey or Eyesight to the Blind. One of the most surprising thing about the band is how many very different sounding songs and genre you can find in their catalog that are all very easily identifiable as the Who thanks to the uniqueness of each member and their playing style...the exceptions only after we lost Keith Moon in 1978 and perhaps when Pete or John sing lead. Glad you changed your mind!!! They are one of the most influential rock bands and it seems like they were ahead of their time; but the truth is...their music is timeless as far as I can tell. Love seeing young people discovering and enjoying the only bands and songs I consider music...😂😂😂 Gosh, I sound ancient!!! 😂😂😂😂

Yeah, and there was a bizarre story behind it. Townsend thought that you might be able to "hear" people's souls if you fed various data (such as astrological charts) into a computer controlling a synth. The results for two people he admired (named Baba and Reily) sounded remarkably similar, and that was the foundation of the song's intro. They added the "O" because they thought the violin at the end sounded Irish lol

A comment about this song. In '72 I went to see ELP at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh and there was a delay in them coming on. They had a problem with Keith's Hammond which was understandable as he would punish that thing, stab it with knives, knock it over ...etc. While the techs were working of course they played the music of the time and this one they played. I don't remember any other songs in the playlist but this one. So when I hear Baba I'm 18 and waiting with nervous anticipation my favorite band at the time.

I saw probably near 300 concerts in my lifetime. Yeah I’m old. Not many over once. The exceptions would be Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush (4) and The Who… 5 times. Starting in 1969. Nuf said.

Isn't it a wonderful moment when you finally "get it"? And that Yiddish dance violinist...? And Hugh plays a mean New Orleans piano style.

The Who are a phenomenal band with an amazing back catalogue. Mod music is often overlooked as a genre and has a lot to offer, in particular The Jam as a Mod/Punk band and Paul Weller on his own who was the lead singer. See Me, Feel Me is one of my Who favourites and the Woodstock live version is brilliant.

I can definitely see The Who's influence on so many different genres of music. They influenced punk but also progressive rock, especially Pink Floyd and Rush

The Who's live version of Baba O'Riley at Shepperton Studios is another all-time gem of a live performance, just like Won't Get Fooled Again at Shepperton Studios. You two should react to the movie by The Who called "The Kids Are Alright". Absolutely epic performances by The Who when Keith Moon was still alive. BTW, I hope you'll react to the song "Getting In Tune" which is also on the Who's Next album. A masterpiece of a vocal performance by Roger Daltrey on that one.....where you get to hear the soft, calming voice of Roger as well as the full-blown "Leather Lungs Daltrey"!

Now Lex (actually you both) should react to Won't Get Fooled Again but the live at Shepperton Studios in 1978. It'll blow your mind.

I highly recommend the song Who are You from 1978. Outstanding and also used as a CSI theme song. Keith moon's final album before his death. I also recommend watching the Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction) drum cover -- it blew me away seeing how complex the drums are on this song.

Actually this was long before the use of sequencers. Like Won’t Get Fooled Again, Pete was using the Repeat mode on his organ and then running that sound through some guitar effects boxes. When you listen to music from this age remember these masterpieces were made with stone tools. No computers. Very few tracks. No automation. As creative as the music was, to get these results you had to be brilliant in the studio. Because there were fewer studio tricks you also had to be a way better musician than now.

So true. Bands at this time get mad respect for not only making great musical arragements but for the production with tech they had. Something unique that makes the 70's so great.

Moons drums drive this band on , along with Entwhistles superb complex bass runs . Moons drumming was unique in that he didn't use a high hat !
