The Who - I'm A Boy (live at leeds), 1970
The last one of the three hit singles.
"We'd like to play three selected hit singles--three easiest...and "I'm a Boy" which according to the, (crowd cheers) thank you, according to the Melody Maker was our first number one in England I think for about a half an hour (crowd laughs)" (Pete Townshend, Live at Leeds).
In this song John's playing style is kinda "pizzicato" in the verse with palm-muted and short notes based on the A maj scale until the pre-chorus, then it's pure power!
What's next? ;)
Thank you for watching!
Cox

EXCELLENT VID. I'M NOT ONLY A BASS PLAYER MYSELF BUT AN ENORMOUS 'WHO' FAN AND THIS WAS NOTE FER NOTE DEAD ON. INTERESTING HOW MANY SOUNDS ENTWISTLE GOT OUT OF THIS ONE BASS SIMPLY BY ADJUSTING THE TONE CONTROL. HE STOPPED DOING THAT AT SOME POINT HE JUST LEFT THE TONE ON FULL HE ALSO WENT ON TO SWITCH BASSES QUITE ALOT BUT LATE 60'S ONSTAGE HE ONLY USED THIS FRANKENSTEIN 'P' BASS. BUT DURING THIS PERIOD HE FINE TUNED THE SOUND FER EACH SONG SECTION AND YOU TOTALLY NAILED IT.

Hey Cox, have you ever thought about covering the shows in Amsterdam or Woodstock in 1969? John's bass in these performances was amazing! It would be nice to see a bass cover of these presentations
@coxbassman968
@coxbassman968 3 года назад
Yes of course! But I think Isle of Wight or Live at Hull are better ones. They are more well recorded and they have stereo tracks which is really important to me to reproduce and understand the bassline. Amsterdam for example has bad recordings so it's really difficult to play exactly like John
@iagosillva1793
@iagosillva1793 3 года назад
@@coxbassman968 Yes, Amsterdam doesn't really have as good a quality as Isle of Wight and Hull. How about Woodstock? I think it has a better quality! But either way, the versions in Hull and Isle of Wight are sensational, especially in Hull.
@coxbassman968
@coxbassman968 3 года назад
@@iagosillva1793 Woodstock indeed is awesome too, but I think I'd go for Hull or Isle of Wight. Recordings are as good as Live at Leeds, so its easier to me to study the bass channel ;) I'd like to play the live version of Tommy

@iagosillva1793 3 года назад
@@coxbassman968 Perfect Cox, thanks for understanding friend, choose the version that is easier for you to study the bass, any version is sensational, even more in your hands that can play very well in the style of John!

Hiwatt dr103 is also my dream amp.. maybe one day I'll be able to afford it. Talking about amps I use an Ashdown ABM500 with 2x12 cab for live stages and studio recordings. About these bass covers I only use a VT bass pedal straight into the usb interface

Great stuff yet again!I owned a Hiwatt 100 half stack back in the 70's and foolishly sold it after a few years.I never really realised the gem I had in my possession at the time as I did not have a great knowledge of amps .Silly me.

Wonderful as always! What kind of strings do you use? Also could we possible see overture, it’s a boy, and 1921? I’m slowly learning Tommy myself and your amazing journey/ sparks video is a huge help! You always seem to hit notes I missed!

Thank you Brenden! I use Rotosound swing bass standard gauge. I'll upload a short video on my rig ;) About Tommy of course! As Live at Leeds it would be great upload some live Tommy (from Live at Hull for example) because I already can play them. It's a good idea!

Cox, what are your thoughts on Entwistle's technique that he used later in his life, from the late 80s until his death?
@coxbassman968
@coxbassman968 3 года назад
John never stopped his experimentation on the sound of his bass guitar. In every decade he was miles ahead of any other bass player. I think in the late 80s he started to use more distortion and harmonics to become the one and only John Entwistle, the inimitable. Also the 90s and 2000s were years of technological development so there was a lot of new stuff like effects, amps, etc. He started using Trace Elliot, Ashdown, guitar preamps and processors, lots and lots of effects... He was a real bass guitarist.
