Pete Townshend...greatest songwriter and showman ever. Daltrey the greatest voice in Rock. Entwistle, greatest bass player ever. And Keith Moon...no one could play like him! What's not to love?
The all time best scream in rock! I got to see them a few years back, 6th row center, and they rocked all 20,000 of us! I made a blue blazer with the Union Jack 🇬🇧 on the back, held it up to them and got a head bow from Roger Daltrey! Blew my mind!
If you want to have your mind blown, react to The Who performing "Young Man Blues" live at the Isle of Wight in 1970. It's probably the greatest live performance I've ever seen.
Good 'ol Keith Moon, dude has his headphones taped on his head haha, such a unique drummer and some of the stories and antics, holy smokes they were nuts
Hi, Pop...BIG fan of The Who. Notice the solid stolidity of The Ox (nickname for Bassist/ back singer John Entwistle)- he forms the roadbed for the solid genius of Roger on vocals and the flaky genius of Pete on guitar and vocals, and Keith (the Loon) Moon on drums, Makes me happy to see it make you happy. Be safe.
Do you know those lasers were borrowed by Ridley Scott when filming the original Alien film in 1978, in the studio next door at Shepperton film studios
I saw them in concert twice and they rock the house like nobody I ever saw. Roger would swing that mic around and throw it out over the audience letting the mic cord slip through his hands then yank it back and catch it right in time for the next verse.
they were filming Alien in the studio next door. The actors took a break to come watch The Who and fell in love with the lazer show and used it in the movie.
Funny you should mention alien. The lasers used in one of the first laser light shows for The Who were moved next door onto the set of the film Alien straight after this performance.
Most definitely one of the best rock performances ever, and yes the greatest scream in rock history. Did you check out the electrical tape on the microphone to keep it connected to the cable? I love this performance but I always scream at the end, "NOOOO, that's a Les Paul!" when Pete gets a little violent.
I saw them perform this on that tour. Unfortunately, it was after the people were trampled at the Cincinnati concert and they kept the house lights up and if you even shifted in your seat, an army of ushers would shine flashlights on you. It really killed the vibe. The laser lights were almost invisible, too.
In case someone hasnt said, Keith Moon's headphones had to be duct taped to his head. Nice that you are watching the best version of this song! Love it bro, keep it up!
Apparently while this was being filmed at Shepperton Studios the film Alien was being filmed in the second studio A lot of the crew from Alien went to see The Who and were inspired by the laser show at the end They all got talking and they ending up using their kit in the film Probably doesn’t matter if you haven’t seen Alien😂
When you see closeups of Daltrey's mic, you see it wrapped in gafffer's tape. Otherwise, the wire would just come right out of the XLR connector, and the mic would go flying off somewhere.
It's always tough for me to watch this performance knowing that Moon was near the end of his life and not playing well at all. You can see Entwistle somewhat willing Moon back on beat throughout the entire performance. I love The Who and Moon, but this is just not indicative of how great they really were on stage in their prime.
Meanwhile, in the US... Grateful Dead (friends of the Who) were quietly becoming most pop US touring band ever. The survivors still play. Every show is different, & they let fans tape it all. They became popular thru fans trading tapes - nor thru commercial means. This concert sits in the Smithsonian. Morning Dew 5/8/77 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RMotfSyRcwU.html
@@Lchristyhastings Got it mixed up with this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9uOuAtYjgFc.html You'll have to find part one yourself. I like this one even more than Cornell...
I have to smile every time I see them live watching the difference between Pete Townshend and John Entwistle on stage Pete Townshend running and jumping all around and there's John Entwistle just standing there playing the bass.
And Entwhistle is the one that ended up O.D.ing on cocaine while Townshend, who in this video seems like he snorted the entire country of Peru, is still going strong. Always wondered what kind of floor burns he got on his knees with that slide behind the Daltrey scream.
Though it begs belief, Roger never hit any other band member with the mic, though it did come detached from the lead a few times, never to be seen again, and he used to duct tape the shit out of it so it would stay attached. According to him anyway. Amazing.
Yep. Pete Townshend was known for smashing his axe on stage. Kieth Moon, "The Loon", the drummer was known for blowing up toilet bowls in hotel rooms while the bass player, John Entwhistle handed him the matches. What was the singer, Roger Daultry doing? I dunno. My best guess is playing, blind, deaf and dumb.
The 70's is known as album rock so you really are missing the whole sound that got these guys to the arenas. The live versions aren't the same in your ear buds.
I saw The Who in 1979. In Cincinnati at the old Coliseum. About 11 people died due to a human stampede caused by Coliseum security. They didn’t even bother telling The Who and the show went on. I’m sure it was a great show but watching a stampede that killed 11 people kinda put a damper on the show, if you know what I mean? The Who was so mad at the Coliseum management that they never played Cincinnati again. It was another 15 years before I went to another concert.
moon was a little bit nuts. he once blew his drum set up on tv with the equivalent of three sticks of dynamite, knocked him on his a$$ with scrap metal in his arms and nearly killed guitarist pete townsend who suffered burns and permanent hearing loss
You seem to enjoy classic rock back when music was real and no rap crap like today of Bieber and Drake. Long live Floyd and Zeppelin and Skynyrd back when music was real and life a lot better with no stupid social media.
