Check out View From a Backstage Pass, supposedly the who recorded a second night that they deemed to be better. There was a problem with the audio equipment and Live at Leeds came to be. It would have been Live at Hull. Anyway, I'm not sure if the audio was repaired, but they released it a few years ago and many of the songs are more ferocious, if possible. There are also live Quadrophenia songs mixed in!

The chromatic build starting at 3:41 is what makes this performance. It facilitates the transition to a quieter background for the pure vitriol of "they stepped BACK!" There's chugging proto-metal at 1:50 that is a full year ahead of Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and the overall attitude is very punk, half a decade before that became a thing. This performance is a de facto ground zero for both punk and metal; an equal to Botticelli's "Birth of Venus," only much darker and more sinister in its' beauty.
@brianshockledge3241

You`ve got that the wrong way round my friend Robert Plant sounds like Roger Daltrey the first rock god. Plant said the amount of chicks he got thinking they were with Daltrey was unbelieveable. He also said they were the best live band he`d ever seen they only played together once at Merriweather May 25th 1969 and The Who blew Zep off the stage. Further live must see are A Quick One Stones Circus 1968 and a visual performance of Young Man Blues Isle of Wight Festival 1970.

Nah....Daltrey was certainly among the first with that style of singing, but he hasn't got the singing chops of Plant. Plant's voice on tracks like You Shook Me, Whole Lotta Love and Dazed and Confused was insanely good. Plant's singing talent was ridiculous. Heavy rock and metal singers copied him relentlessly.
@brianshockledge3241
@brianshockledge3241 3 года назад
@@stephendavis5530 Plant`s voice was great particularly on all the covers for the first few years but went downhill very quickly. Daltrey reached his peak around a decade into his career Plant had been and gone it that time frame. Ballads, plaintive or full throated rockers Daltrey had it all.

Yes, it’s almost like the four of them were competing to dominate at times. What I love to do is try to pull them apart in my mind to make sense of how complicated it all is-interwoven layers like a symphony. Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony gets intense like The Who toward the end.

Jazz pianist and laconic singer Mose Allison would not have recognized the song he wrote. Townshend was a big Mose fan. As a teen, he knew a bloke who somehow got records from the U.S. One day Pete heard one of Mose's records and loved his smoky, Deep South, soulful voice. Pete was astounded when he saw the record cover, which revealed Mose was a white man. After that, Pete said many years later, he had the notion that maybe he could be a singer someday.

The Who, are a Band you have to see to get the entire picture of (No pun intended) to see "Who" they were, and what they were about. Great Band started in 1966, until .....? It is what they used to call progressive blues back in the late 60's. They all played a style called "lead rythmn". Pete was playing a blend of rythmn and Iead guitar while John Entwistle was spiraling around him with what was called lead bass and god only knows what to call Kieth Moon's drumming...genius maybe?

There is some latter day material that has aged well: Another Tricky Day and Eminence Front come to mind. That latter one HAS to be experienced live, for Pete's ad-lib vitriol. The 12/17/82 Toronto performance is the perfect example. Pissed-off Who songs have always been the best to perform, for me. Usually, I have to be both John AND Roger when doing them.

This band was ALL about the contrast between the genius R&B songwriter/guitarist Pete Townsend and the maniac drummer Keith Moon, whom the former to this day has NEVER understood. Bassist John Entwistle, too, was a genius in his own right, and the band tended to break down between Pete, Roger, and "the other two." Unfortunately, there's nothing to be had listening to them anymore since the deaths of John and Keith except something along the lines of nostalgia. Like the band Sha Na Na.
