Once, the Tongala River, which most maps now call the Murray, was a place of peace where the Water-Rat Tribe could live with ease. But then one day appeared the Whowie: a great frog-headed lizard, long and fat and slow, prowling the banks.

Something I love about Aborigine myth is that a lot of their monsters sound eerily similar to Australia's prehistoric beasts. This Whowie sounds a lot like the real life giant lizard called Megalania, which ancient Australians met and very well may have driven to extinction. Same can be said for the semiaquatic giant Bunyip creature, which sounds a lot like the wombat like extinct Diprotodon. The Aborigine cultures are considered the oldest still in existence, and their stories reflect that.

It actually sounds strikingly similar to Koolasuchus, a gigantic salamander whose fossils have been found in Australia. Just with a few extra legs and a miles deep cave. I wouldn’t be surprised if fossils of something like that inspired this legend.

I have said before that setting a RPG in australia using then Aboriginal myths and culture as its core would be a fantastic way to teach non aboriginal people about their cultures. Australia is a big place and the Aboriginal nations are wide and diverse with lots of different spirits and stories that could be used to make an adventuring party very happy for a good while. For instance moving from nation to nation would be like moving from city to city in normal D&D. Different culture, make sure you keep them happy by knowing what you need to do to gain access (message sticks etc) and have to deal with their individual nations troubles and creatures. Many of the animals in the dreamtime stories are also anthropomorphised so that adds a lot of texture too.

A lot of stories from the dreaming are great allegories or have metaphor meanings, but with the Whowie it’s actually a literal event. The Megalania was a Monitor lizard in Australia that went extinct about 50,000 years ago, meaning it was one of the megafauna species that aboriginal nations would have encountered in their first 5-10,000 years of settlement around the Murray river area (which also used to connect up to a network of inland seas)

IMHO Amphibia have lots of untapped monster potential It's also cool how the stories are woven into the landscape, referring to its features, and as in the previous one you get the sense that this was a very "honor your elders" type of culture in the olden days

Joe Rogers thay do live in new guinea though, and at the end of the last ice age the australian first nations did trade with the new guidelines, that doesn't explain why the whowie myths are from central australia but it's still a possibility

The ancestors of most Native Australians certainly came from Asia, but I dunno if they came from that far north.

Sounds, to me, like an allegory for death, itself; ponderous but inevitable, dreaded yet indiscriminate, & so subtle that its victims never wake & its presence is often dismissed. So the myth could, just as easily, be called "How we Murdered Death!" 🤘

I would love to see either a series about the purpose of myths and the meaning behind specific myths (ex; "listen to your elders", "the river is dangerous", "explanation for natural disaster/phenomenon"), or these myths elaborated on to explain their meaning or the purpose the served that society.

My good friend found an artical about very Very ancient aborigional laungague/stories being an effective schooling system for survival, finding water in hilariously dry locals, to hunting methods, this story about smoking prey out of burrows. My guess would be extra credits left out the part where everybody ate blue pepe as if he was a beached whale.
