Only $5 for 10 PCBs and every new member get $5 bonus. + Express 24 hour / 48 hour service on www.pcbway.com/ ➠ ➠ ➠ Doing an RF alignment on a tube radio is actually quite a simple process, provided you have detailed alignment instructions for that particular set. If you don't, it can get messy. The solution is to understand why you're doing what you're doing, as this takes the guessing out of the procedure. A little learning can go a long way to saving you lots of time and frustration in the future, so here we go ...

I studied electronics and Radio-Television repair in trade school from 1977-1980 and IF/RF alignments were always a favorite of mine. My career centered on audio-visual equipment repair for a large school system and never touched a radio receiver during that time. I am retired now but still have my generators and meters. watching videos like these bring back some good memories. Vacuum tube equipment was just about obsolete in use when I started school but the curriculum had a thorough course of it with hands on training before teaching transistor theory.

Having read a number of RF alignment instructions, I can’t recall any of them asking me to be sure the pointer is correctly placed on the dial string as you explained. I’m guilty of “not seeing the forest through the trees”. As it turns out my blaupunkt just needs a pointer adjustment…. Thanks for having us see the big picture first. Great video.

One thing you could have added to the theory is why we adjust the inductance at the LF end of the band and the trimmer capacitors at the HF end of the band. It turns out that at the LF end of the band where the tuning capacitor is at a maximum, adjusting the trimmer capacitors has little effect on the total capacitance and thus resonant frequency. Therefore, only adjusting the inductance will change the resonant frequency. This leaves the trimmer capacitors to be adjusted at the high frequency end of the band where they will have a considerable effect on the total capacitance and thus resonant frequency.

My God this is a good series, well put together Manuel, i watched it in 1 1/2 day, thank you for sharing. I knew some of the hows, but very little about the whys i admit. I feel i'll be better prepared for my next repair project which is a Telefunken 5116 WK, console with pick up. Should get it on the bench any time now, owner says it's completely dead. I repaired a Grundig 2220 CA last winter and it went well and gave me enough confidence to tackle the big console. I just love the German radios :-)

This Drahtfunk thing was specific to Switzerland. Many locations in valleys had poor or no radio reception and they transported the signals over the phone lines on longwave frequencies. Later there was a very dense network of FM transmitters, which will soon be replaced by DAB+. Switzerland will then be the second country after Norway with no analog radio stations (your country Portugal is the one of the few EU countries with no DAB digital radio at all).

Thanks Manuel. That simplified schematic really helped to make it obvious why the trimmer cap has more effect at the high frequency end of the dial. I confess I was looking at your replacement dial glass with some envy as I have a Nordmende Othello in the queue with a dial glass in three pieces. 😢

Strange dial... 🤔 I've never seen moorside edge on an english radio, never mind a german one!

Manuel, Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful! One can learn so much from your videos. They are great. Is it possible for us to get the .STL files so we can print the AM antenna loop?

My R.A.E. instructor always said "One over 2 Pi root LC gives you the resonant frequency! Still remember that even after over forty years!
