John Hollwitz is a University Professor of psychology and rhetoric. Before coming to Fordham, he was the A.F. Jacobson Professor of Communications at Creighton University and dean of arts and sciences at Loyola College in Maryland. He also has been the vice president of academic affairs at Fordham.
Professor Hollwitz's teaching interests include management; experimental/quasi-experimental design; statistics; item response theory; structural equation modeling; team-building, especially in high-pressure teams; life-span career development; religion and work. His avocations include martial arts, especially classical Tai Chi sword; blues music; and jazz history, especially in the Columbus Circle area from 1920 through 1935.
Our interview was focused on the why and how of corporate ethics.
During our conversation, we discussed the following topics.
1 Why John, already in 1997, so years ahead of the wave of corporate scandals that would happen only a few years later (ENRON, Worldcom, Tyco), published an article about “The Development of a Structured Ethical Integrity Interview for Pre-Employment Screening”.
2 Some people argue that, in a capitalistic system, the only obligation for public companies is to optimize the value for their shareholders, and therefore only need to stick to the (letter of) the law of the jurisdiction they operate in. What is the relationship between ethics (asking what is morally right or wrong) and how public companies should operate in a capitalistic system?
3 Almost every organization nowadays has a 'code of conduct' or one or more other documents describing their ethical principles. How could companies ensure these values come to life in the way these organizations operate?
4 How John implements ethics in his curriculum, to ensure your students take a sense of ethics with them once they leave the university and enter the world of work
5 The relationship between ethics and a sense of purpose
6. The connection between Jung's notion of individuation and the sense of purpose of organizations.
7. The consequences for organizations that do not have a sense of purpose
8 The consequences of a perceived lack of purpose for the well-being of employees
9 How organizations can create a sense of purpose for their employees
10 Why Jonn is developing a book-length manuscript called 'Hearing the Blues' and what this book is about
11 How listeners can help John to complete this manuscript
12 Beyond management science: the question of transcendent meaning in Organizations
