One of the hardest things to turn on a wood lathe is a root ball.
This is a Camellia root ball and the wood was very hard.
Lots of cracks and vides to deal with but it turned into a real beauty.
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac.

Gary very often, less is more and that was very evident with this piece. You let nature shine with this one and that was obviously the right choice. Beautiful piece.

Hello Gary. For many years I've been following the most diverse wood turners in the world on RU-vid, and I've caught the wood turning virus myself. I have around 100 subscribers spread around the world. Your channel is one of five, I stress five, that I've turned the bell on. This means that you are one of my absolute favorites in terms of craftsmanship, sympathy, feeling for form and design and, last but not least, the likeable demeanor. And this video is proof of that once again. From a heavy piece of root wood, which is of course a great challenge, you make a very decent turned object. But that's not the only thing that excites me, it's the fact that you let the holey and uneven beauty of this piece work, yes, that you don't try to smooth out all the bumps and natural gaps with this terrible epoxy, but that you try to imperfection in its perfection. In my eyes this is art. Thank you for this wonderful video and for all the previous ones. Many greetings and my greatest respect from the far north of Germany. Schorschi

Wow! Haha, I thought you might have lost your marbles again when I first saw that thing, Gary! I was amazed at how much solid wood was under all those little roots, twigs, mud and what not. I love everything you did to this piece. Perfect design, you stopped at the right point so as not to erase what Mother Nature had spent years perfecting. I know this was a lot of work but, from this end of things, it was totally worth all you put into it. Really nice piece, my friend! I'm impressed! Keep'em coming, buddy! 😊 Phil

Thanks so much Phil. If I had not watched you tackle the root balls you have done I am not sure if I would have even turned this piece that looked like it had no hope at all. Then I looked at the poor thing that waited so long and thought about my son wondering if the old man would ever actually do it I said ok today is the day! Inspired but all you have done and not wanting to let my son down I did it and am very happy with the results. And he will betting his root ball back soon. I need to at least have a week with it to actually look at everything that is there. Sometimes you just can not take it all in even after turning it. Thanks again for how you inspire all of us my friend! Take care, Gary

That really looks lovely! I turned a Cherry root ball a few years ago...it was quite an experience because it was very early in my turning career.

Thank you Carol. It is an experience for sure. I turned a couple other smaller ones and they were interesting as well. I just wanted this one to all stay together because there was a big crack that had me concerned but lots of wood holding things together. Thanks for watching, Gary

Good evening, Gary. Your openning picture had me asking questions. After some wacking and turning, that messy root ball started to make sense. Very interesting finished bowl. Character for sure. Well done.

Thank you Ray. Well when I decided to turn it I knew I had footage of it before trimming all the branches. And there they were in a file called things I plan on doing. I was shocked when I checked out that video and thought what the heck am I doing but then looked at the piece I had trimmed a year ago. It was fun but hard. Thanks for watching, Gary

Super video, Gary, thank you. I am intrigued but don't think I would be brave enough just yet to try turning a root ball! - but if I do, I will come back to this video for a master class! NB New Videos from you and Phil Anderson; what a great treat, and preparation for some weekend woodturning. Happy turning!

Thank you very much David. Perhaps if you can find a smaller root ball from something like a fruit tree. Much softer wood than this. After turning a few things from the trunk of this bush I knew the wood was very hard. I was happy with being able turn this one without a bunch of problems. Thanks for watching, Gary

That is a spectacular piece, Gary! I would not have used resin on that one either. Of course, in my case it’s because I’m too cheap. I think you would’ve spent about $250 to get enough resin for that piece. Really enjoyed this video, my friend. Hope to see more from you soon! 😃😃 Happy turning, …..Gord

@ThePapa1947 Год назад
Thank you Gord! I just have a hard time with wanting to fill all this up(and yes it can be very pretty) The resin is costly and I passed on a chance to sponsor a resin company. Just not what I want to do with my turning. More coming and am mixing it up. I am working on a small tall table for our church but I am not sure how flat work would go over on my channel. Maybe I will make one of those short videos? Take care my friend, Gary

Yep Gary, very very cool! I love it. On my lathe, I would call that a rescue piece, and I’m just stubborn enough that I likely would have glued that one edge piece back on (whether it needed it or not 😉). That bowl could shine in an art gallery for sure! Just lovely 😊 Cheers, Rick

Thank you Rick! I did consider gluing it back on but I have a feeling it would have just kept falling off. I admit I was a bit unhappy that it fell off but got over it pretty fast LOL. Happy your liked it my friend. Take care, Gary

Looks beautiful - not many people realise how long it takes for a piece of wood to season, and for a design idea to hatch and develop. Not to mention how many hours of turning, sharpening and sanding before you see the finish going on and the full beauty can be seen! This piece has been a labour of love and I really enjoyed watching the journey, many thanks!

Thank you radar. It is a big ole heavy beast but in it's own way looks delicate with some of the beautiful colors found inside. I bought those sanding balls a number of years ago and have only used them a few times. It was nice for buffing the inside with all the inclusions. And I think I have seen you use them as well. Take care my friend, Gary

Well thank you Dave. This one sat on the shelf for a long time. Close to 3 years from when he pulled it out of the ground. Phil turned a small piece from what I trimmed off the bottom. And I also turned some from that area. I just needed to study the root ball for a few years. Thanks for watching, Gary

Fantastic job Gary. I am not at all surprised that Phil enjoyed this piece, it is 'right up his alley'. I love that you left the walls thick to enable you to retain as much 'nature' as possible, I believe you have created quite a masterpiece with this one, good shape & good finish too. As always, enjoyed this video Gary. BTW, thank you for not epoxying that piece of wood. That, in my opinion, would have taken away from the uniqueness of the piece of art. Even the chainsaw marks give it quite a bit of character. Nicely done! Also, isn't it great to do things such as camping, fishing, and other outdoor adventures with the Grands? Those memories will be something they will cherish forever, even after we are long gone. Love it!

Excellent project Gary! I really like how this turned out. Clearly a lot of hard work, but worth it. I really enjoyed how you kept all the natural features. They add a lot of beauty. Makes for a very unique piece. I have a root ball down at the creek that I have thought about harvesting. It's from a walnut tree that I cut down a couple of years ago. I may take on that challenge this winter after seeing this. But I'll need some of the cool chisels like what you have there probably. Thanks for sharing a great project! See you next week.

Thank you Mark. The outside was pretty tough with that bulge on the side. After that I was able to use the bowl gouge for all of it. And I was almost sure I would need carbide on the inside. Glad I did not have to. Best of luck with the Walnut root ball you have. Take care, Gary

What an interesting piece, Gary. As you were discussing your plans for it I was envisioning what Phil's approach might be. I think the heft and thickness you decided on was the best way to go. There was a bit of potential for it to come apart if you kept removing material. That looked like a very patient project, really dulling tools and tearing out. It was good to watch you find solutions.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Год назад
Thank you Jay. It was full of challenges for sure. The shape was difficult not doing what I would be able to do on the inside. And then not cutting so much away I lost all the nature in it. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks for watching, Gary

First thing I noticed: There isn't much left of the original piece. Not surprising but good to know for me; I have a similar piece, namely the crown of a Weeping Willow. I've been reluctant to put the chainsaw to it because cutting wood away can be done only once. At least there is no dirt inside mine. Thnx for the example of what can be done to a piece like that. 😎
