My hunt for delicious American rums is never-ending! I asked you for your favorite American rum distilleries and these were just three of the suggestions.
Kohana is a farm distillery based in O'ahu that was founded in 2009 and produces all of their rums from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice that they grow themselves. The bottle that I taste in this video is made from only one of the 30 varieties of sugarcane that they grow. After tasting this, I want to get my hands on all of their other unaged releases!
Kohana KEA October 2022 Harvest Ko-Kea
- 40% ABV, $36
- Fresh-pressed Ko-Kea sugarcane juice
- Hybrid pot distilled
- Rested for 6 months in stainless steel
Seven Caves is a small craft distillery based in San Diego. They were founded in 2017 and not only make rums, but also make gin and the occasional whiskey. They produce their rums from molasses and sugar. This batch was aged for 3 years in oak and bottled without any additives.
Seven Caves Barrel Aged Rum
- 45% ABV, $40
- Molasses & sugar
- Hybrid pot distilled
- Aged 3 years in oak
Richland Rum is a farm distillery based in Georgia (they now have two distilleries!) and they have been around since 1999. They grow all of their sugarcane on Richland Estate and boil the fresh-pressed sugarcane juice into a syrup that they ferment. This single barrel was aged for 4.5 years in new American oak and bottled at cask strength.
Richland Rum Single Estate Cask Strength Rum (Cask 359, Bottle 096/178)
- 51.28% ABV, $65
- Sugarcane syrup from estate-grown cane
- Copper alembic pot distilled
- Aged from 09/03/2015-03/13/2020
- Bottled at cask strength

It's so refreshing to see American rum from places where they actually grow cane!! 😍

Right!! Speaking of places that grow cane, I'm going to be back in Nola for Mardi Gras this year and plan to come back with lots of Roulaison!

@@RobynSmithPhD Yessss! If you get a chance, also stop by Gonzales for jambalaya and single-parish cane juice rum at Sugarfield.

I loved the bottle from Seven Caves. Good price as well, I recall the taste being pretty spicy/peppery but it's been a while. Another good San Diego rum distillery is Clever Fox. I've only had their white rum, and it's very earthy, I liked it a lot.

That was fun especially before breakfast. I would like to have been able to see the bottles you were talking about on your final thoughts. Thanks, always looking for your latest videos.

The Richland sounds tempting, but I limit rum before breakfast to when I am within sight of a beach.

Thanks for the great reviews Robin. None of them seem to be over the top good. Sounded like the third one was palatable.

Glad you enjoyed it! All three of them were definitely palatable... I'd happily sip on any of them! Especially the bottle of Kohana for its price point... the Richland Rum was much more expensive (I think I grabbed it on sale for like $65), so as compared to other rums within its price range it might not quite match up, but I'm really pleased with it overall!

Entertaining and interesting review. Don't overlook Louisiana when it comes to American Rum. The have a long history of growing sugarcane and great rum brands like Bayou and Sweet Crude. Also Three of Strong Spirits in Maine brings in raw Louisiana cane juice to produce their Agricole style Acadian brand rum which is very nice for around $40.
@RobynSmithPhD
@RobynSmithPhD 6 месяцев назад
Thanks so much! I'll be in Louisiana in a couple months and I'll make sure to try Bayou and Sweet Crude while I'm there! I'm a big fan of Roulaison and Atelier Vie in Nola! Have you tried any of their rums? Wow, how does Three of Strong Spirits bring in cane juice from Louisiana without it spontaneously fermenting in transport? I know Porchjam Distillery that makes Cheramie Rum actually pitches their yeast into the transport tanks because the juice starts spontaneously fermenting during the couple-hour drive that they have from the farm to their distillery.
@ILuvRum
@ILuvRum 6 месяцев назад
@@RobynSmithPhD Have not tried Roulaison nor Atelier Vie but I will be looking for them next time I pass through New Orleans. I picked up the other two when passing through Cajun country, Bayou being in Lacassine and Sweet Crude being put out by Wildcat Brothers Distillling in Lafayette As far as how Three of Strong gets their cane juice, I can see where spontaneous fermentation would be an issue, but have no idea how they do it. Refrigeration or some sort of stabilizer perhaps? Acadian definitely has those unmistakable raw cane juice notes though, and it states distilled, bottled and rested in Portland, ME on the bottle. It would be a good question for them if I make it down their way for a tour.

@@ILuvRum Rum from Portland, ME? They probably mix it with paper mill effluent. LOL!
@ILuvRum
@ILuvRum 6 месяцев назад
@@bdwilcox Actually, there were literally hundreds of rum distilleries in colonial New England, more than there were in the Carribean. There is a rich history of rum production there and rum was one of the fuels of the American Revolution.

Love how you describe rum flavors, far more discerning than my humble ham fisted cave man sense of flavor! 😂 One question how dose the Kahona compare to Bacardi white?
@RobynSmithPhD
@RobynSmithPhD 6 месяцев назад
Oh wow, I haven't had Bacardi in many many years and I can guarantee I have only ever had it mixed with Coke. So I don't actually know what Bacardi white tastes like on its own. Barcardi's style of rum is very different from Kohana's. There's a lot more complexity, flavor, and funkiness with a rum like Kohana, whereas Bacardi white is better suited for mixing.

@@RobynSmithPhD that answers my question 👍 Joy's of being in the "antipodes", limited choice, and at extreme price points 😓 but now have another rum to look out for 🤔👍

I would have got the Seven Caves unaged Overproof Jamaican style and it's only $30-ish. I want to get the new Mount Gay aged Overproof that I here is good and it's only $30-ish. I would like to try the Kohana aged cask strength but the price has prevented me. Koloa rum has a cask strength single cask versions that is said to be good and around 5 years old but it's hard to get. I assume you have bought the box set of the new Hampden Estate 8 marques that is $150-ish
@RobynSmithPhD

I was looking for the Seven Caves white overproof, but couldn't find it... I plan to visit them (soon-ish) and will definitely grab some then! I did not buy the Hampden 8 Marks set only because I asked for that for my birthday, which is in 6 days... I'm very patiently waiting until then to open the large box that's sitting in my apartment right now.

If you described that Kohana to me without telling me its name, I would have thought you were describing a Clairin rum.

Right! I was really pleasantly surprised with the funk! It definitely had a few notes that reminded me of Clairin Sonson and Puro de Surales.
