Back in high school (1973) I had watched Bruce Brown's movie - On Any Sunday. I wanted to make my own motocross movie, so I grabbed my dad's old regular 8mm movie camera, my cassette recorder and started putting things together. Enjoy a piece of nostalgia.

I truly loved motocros during the early 1970s. Seemed like magic then.

I had a silver metal-flake helmet back in '68 when I rode my Greeves Challenger. Think of it, guys. Silver metal-flake. How cool is that?

Love the 1972 trans ama coverage. 1972 was the year of Maico and Ake became a household name in the world of motocross that year and he was my hero.....It was also the last year of titanium light weight works bikes in G.P. racing, primarily the works Huskies. Open face helmets, carrera98 goggles and, jofas forever!!! Also love the old Ford bumpside trucks in the pits.... The best of times, good and bad, in my life spent and shared with my dad and, sometimes mom as well, riding dirt bikes and racing motocross and being part of that world through the 70's oh so long ago 😥 .... R.I.P. to you both

I dig the way 8mm film looks a bit faded and fuzzy, just like my memory of those times......

it's so crazy how contemplative and time travel this video is, the clothes and the shapes of the motorcycles and the instrumental music, such a fun place to go back

I had a 73 Yamaha 360 raced in open class. Very heavy bike, crappy suspension raced against Huskys, Maicos and Bultacos. I bought it for the engine which I later put in a Champion frame and raced short tract dirt ovals with it them was fun days!

Even a little 'BRUCE BROWN-esque in your Voice Over delivery. BRAVO Rich... I raced in the 70's & 80's myself (started in '74). Between THE GREAT ESCAPE & ON ANY SUNDAY the fire was lit (for so many of us I'm sure). Truly appreciate your lil' project! Thank you for putting it out there for us all to enjoy too... Though I think the quote actually is: "2nd most DEMANDING Sport in the world".

Agreed! I was told, back then, that Soccer was the First with Motocross a close second! Although i didn't run track or play football and basketball in '70's High School, I won the Presidential Fitness Award in my 1975 Senior Year. I was racing Motocross then, on a Honda CR250 Elsinore!

Hey Rich, just now watching your Video, Great Work, back then it wasnt easy to put a production together and have it turn out as good as you would want it to, I remember going to the threater and watching Ony Any Sunday and thought is was the best, your personal version is not only interesting but worth watching, now it's nostalgic. Also would you be willing to allow this to be played at a venue in Pendleton OR, It's The Back Fire restaurant, check it out online, this video would work perfect for their atmosphere, let me know, thks

@@richkorb Aw Heck, My Man! It's not too late! Take your *Hi-Def* Capable *iPhone* or *Android* Smartphone outside today and shoot anything. Then sit down and edit your footage in the free App *Hitfilm* *Express!* You have plenty of time to catch up with the Celluloid Film Greats since they are getting super busy figuring _how to transfer their early 8mm footage onto a computer_ .

@@johnarnold1364 Interesting. Glad I'm not a politician. I see my earlier message got misread. I was actually *giving* *props* to everyone. Our Super *film* *makers* , our powerful *smartphones* that outperform many of the early 2000 Laptops and are *Hi-Def* *ready* straight out of the box. With *Hitfilm* *Express* still free, along with *Davinci* *Resolve* *16* , the point i was trying to make then, and now is, many of us have so many *8mm* tapes and analog *videocassettes* piled high that desperately need to be converted to digital and perhaps stored on the cloud (before they deteriorate). I believe Spielberg, Lucas, and Abrams, among others, all have a similar pile of video homework converting chores yet to do. The fun point line was, in the time it takes to finally convert all of your past precious lovely footage into a digital format, someone today shooting outside with their new iphone may have time to get _"pretty good'_ as a Videographer by the time we all finish up our family video stash conversions.

What a great little gem you made! Looks like my area (Seattle). Trans AMA was obviously Puyallup but where were the small tracks? I only ever went to Jolly Rogers in Kent. How did you get the pieces of the On Any Sunday soundtrack music back then before the internet or dvds, vcrs etc.? Is it me or were MX bikes were cooler looking back then.
@richkorb
@richkorb 6 лет назад
How I made the film - I had, and still do have, an old 33 1/3 On Any Sunday record. I recorded it on my cassette recorder. The actual Trans AMA recording was recorded with my cassette recorder and mic on the day they showed the race a week later. If you listen carefully you can hear the super 8mm projector in the background and us talking. When I first showed it I had to start the cassette and projector at the same time. Splicing the cassette recording and film together was tricky. With help from a friend in the film conversion industry we were able to bring the cassette recording and film together on a DVD. Glad you enjoyed the film.

The tracks where Startup, outside of Monroe. A farmer turned his pasture into a track. One year the international riders had a race there before the TransAm in Puyallup. Other tracks were - Bremerton, and Shelton. Some of the filming was done in a sand pit next to hwys 405 and 520. We also did a lot of riding on the now Microsoft campus. Glad you enjoyed the film.
