It's time to face the Wigan Lock flight. Narrowboat Silver Fox tackles the 23 Wigan Canal locks out of Wigan on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towards the distant Pennines. But are they really that scary?

I’m beginning to find it hard to say in original words how I love your vlogs. In fact, I think I haven’t actually commented on your last two episodes. One of the main reasons for this is I much prefer to watch you on our large screen television. Full HD and great sound. It’s much better than watching you on the laptop or desktop commuter, especially considering how high the quality of your production and editing skills are. Ah… the birds eye view of your drone! More than once I have paused the video to take in all that detail. Another great episode guys, I’ve come to expect no less. But - if I can be so presumptuous - if you miss me commenting here, it’s not because I don’t love your videos, it’s because I am a lazy so and so and I’m watching on the big screen where they don’t let you comment. In fact, I think the advent of smart large screen tellies with RU-vid built in may be a factor of popular videos such as yours seeing a drop of the amount comments people leave. Food for thought? Anyways, as ever, I love your content xx

Nice that you "bigged up" the CRT volunteers and you're journey up the Wigan Flight showed how helpful, even essential at times, is the work they do. It's a pity that people knock them when they're giving up their free time to help others. It's the same old story I guess that people don't value things when they're "free". Is it usual to tip them?

I love those CRT volunteers!!! Seriously. Besides the fact that they are there to help everyone, I know how much they must be appreciated by folks like me who quite honestly, wouldn’t be able to be physically capable of handling that many locks by ourselves. The fact that they will do a ride-along from top to bottom and visa-versa is literally a lifesaver for folks that wouldn’t be able to do it on their own! A lot of folks complain (justifiably) about the CRT sometimes, but you gents always seem to shine a light on the positive side. Thanx for another great video!!!

Thanks, and some great points! The CRT do get a bad rep, and a lot of the time, undeserving. Hopefully, positivity breeds positivity. These people give up their time to help others and deserve some credit for it. Great comment, thanks mate! 👍🏻

As a lad (60 years ago) going up the river Medway with my dad on his boat - pressganged (more pocket money really :) into doing all the locks, I spotted a chap winding the lock with his lock key. After a couple of turns, the key sprung off and plopped straight into the deep and dark lock! Without hesitation, he took off his shoes and placed his hat on top of them - then dived in! I jumped off our boat and rushed over, concerned because he'd been down ages! I couldn't swim, so I was basically useless in that remote place, but luckily after a few moments, a hand came out of the deep, holding a lock key (not a sword :), then his head followed gasping for air. He spotted me, smiled and said, "that took some time to find - my head's cold, chuck us my hat, I did that, laughed and promptly learnt to swim :)

Well done colin for braving the rain whilst shaun was in the dry , full mark's on including the conversation with the CRT volunteer it was a good interview as we don't often hear thier side ,and without them boating would be a lot harder.look forward to your next exploit ,ps ime and my son have just spent the last 2 days riding the Romney&Hythe railway loads of steam engines colin lol bye for now

Great as usual. One thing that might be cool is an occasional vlog of a side excursion. Like to the ice cream shop and town, or to the occasional canal side pub. Not all the time. After all you two need to have time away from the camera to enjoy life. Your small towns and villages in the UK are so historic and beautiful. I love the architecture and the feel.

As a volunteer on the Wigan flight it was so good to see you appreciate the help you got from Andy. It’s a great way to get outside and do something useful and meet lots of boaters and we all really enjoy what we do but it can be really hurtful when you see so many negative comments on various forums. Funny thing is you don’t hear those comments at the time on the flight - usually when people have passed through and have the anonymity and security of their laptops / tablets. Says a lot I guess. Anyway glad you enjoyed the experience and I hope to see you on the flight at some point in the future. Happy cruising guys and thanks for all the fantastic vlogs!

I agree with everything you just said, Paul. We have the same issue with our channel. People click the dislike button but they never ever actually comment or say anything negative because it would show their name. haha! Life's too short to take any notice of the haters. Lovely video. I often walk the Wigan flight and along the canal from Adlington to Chorley. I can confirm that Frederick`s ice cream is the best, I have eaten it all my life. You have a very nice pub coming up called `Top Lock` You have been to Wigan and not had a pie?

Great vlog , lots of chick weed I see , yuk , that looked a nice pub , I'd definitely have to pop in there lol , just a small tip , if you're an only barge in a big lock & you're not used to them , thread your rope through a rond anchor & just keep moving it up the ladder , we used to find it easier than trying to struggle moving your rope up each rung on the ladder , & keep your rope tight ,as your boat can sometimes float away from the edge with the current coming towards you , which can be dangerous .

I was a CRT volunteer for a year or so. I got tired of picking up rubbish, needles, dirty nappies, beer cans and avoiding standing in the ridiculous amount of dog crap that irresponsible owners don't pick up. We rarely got to do anything less mundane. Don't get me wrong it's sadly necessary, but variety wasn't forthcoming! Good luck to those who continue to provide this service.

My favorite part of the videos are the “Out Takes”......watching them always results in a good laugh......(I have a funny story to share): I have watched so many of your videos to date, that I have now acquired your Dialect and UK expressions. My favorite phrase by far is “Ear-worm” - none of my family, or friends have heard or used this phrase here in Ohio, and it is absolutely hilarious to see & hear their responses when I use it in a sentence.

Love to see your videos, I come from Wigan, me and the Wife had a walk up the Wigan flight actually spoke to Andy,I took some pictures and started to paint some of the locks proud to say that my painting of lock 77 has been accepted to go into an exhibition being put on by Wigan Council at the Galleries from January 25th to March 14th. Hope canal enthusiasts have a chance to see it.

Really enjoyed this one guys. I’ve been a ball on the Wigan flight for two years now and have grown very fond of it. It’s a shame it has the rep it does because it’s really quite a beautiful stretch only a mile away from Wigan town centre. It’s a great communal meeting place to for walkers dog owners runners bikers . Just sorry I missed you but I only do Thursdays ! Keep em coming guys

On this vlog you needed to encourage sean to talk more, he was invisible for most of it. Same is true of Dylan, but he doesn't talk, just wags tail. Does he ever bark? He looks a friendly dog :)

Shaun is really uncomfortable on camera, hence he wanted to stay on the boat instead of working the locks and doing the filming. He's actually happier that way. Dillon only barks when he thinks someone is trying to break into the boat (good trait), and also if another dog makes eye contact with him 😂

I wonder what traffic was like in the day, when so many boats were carrying cargo up & down the canal. With so many more boats, was it quicker or slower? Every lock would be set for you as someone would be coming up (or down), but you'd need to queue as well.

Although the weather cleared about halfway through, I gotta tell you that, when we "on the other side" of the big pond think of the UK, and England especially - personal experience of several visits COMPLETELY to the contrary - we figure that, along with damn fine brews, YOU INVENTED ALL DAY PISSING RAIN. ;-)

I enjoyed today's vlog. Coincidentally we had a short walk to Frederick's this evening after tea, starting & finishing by Bridge 71 (at the little boatyard with the double decker bus cafe). I had lemon cheesecake flavour.! :-D I'd wondered what it was like to come up the locks in a boat as I quite often cycle up the towpath on my way home when I've got off a train at Wigan. It's a bit quicker by bike - it usually takes me around 15 minutes from the bridge at the turn near Wigan Pier to Top Lock. Much nicer than plodding up the road, especially around rush hour!

Pressed the "like"-button after 2 seconds, simply 'cuz I knew I'd love it :-) My son watches most vlogs with me, when I call him. He has autism, a lot of it, and communicates in a very "personal" way. But he immediately saw Shaun waving from the helm at the 77th lock so he waved back. Hi guys!

Loved it you managed to get some ‘droning’ in of the surroundings in spite of the rain and all the flights Thanks for putting a good word in for flight and volunteers. Just heard again today limits are still on. Movement only permitted at 8:30 am both directions !

It isn't that often we A Superdry wearing Silver Fox wearing a Superman Shirt after getting Super wet is it? (by that fine rain that soaks you more than normal rain) The views throughout were brilliant, the weather was a great contributor to that too, it sort of sets the mood of the kind of day, started off with hesitency with the rain and as you progressed the sun came out as this was as Colin was feeling more upbeat and that was great. 4:39 that looks like well lubricated equipment and we all know Colin likes his equipment well lubricated. But shows that if you look after such things well, they can last for a long time - yes I am on about mechanical equipment, ha ha, as Colin was as well, if its anything else, well thats for their private life thats all I am going to say. Of course huge thanks to the CRT people for helping where they can, especially a huge thanks for helping the Foxes on this particular part of their travels.

@@FoxesAfloat it's a bit of a long way in the south, the locks are odd giant green gillouteen things. If you do end up coming down practice your weights as the wheels for the gillouteen part of the lock are a proper workout 😂

Thanks for another fantastic segment! There is an area above Santa Barbara, CA called Red Rock...absolutely fabulous when the winter and spring rain turns a meandering stream into a rushing torrent. A great spot for loving nature. Have a good week!

That's pretty quick, It took us 4hrs 15min going up a with two boats and 3.00hrs going back down. Cracking job, the CRT guys on the flight were absolutely amazing with us.
