It's one of the funniest things about showing NGE to newer anime fans, so many shows reference and pull ideas from NGE that it makes NGE feel like an amalgamation of stereotypes and tropes if you don't remind yourself that it came first.

There is something about the song "Real Folk Blues" that really twangs on my heartstrings. From the first time I heard it all the way up until today. It has that kind of melancholic anemoia that few musical pieces are able to carry. I was 16 when i first saw Bebop, and that song has stuck with me since. It reminds me of High School, it reminds me of The Jazz Age, it reminds me of comic conventions, it reminds me of the future. Such a bizarre and specific mixture of emotions and memories, and it feels like it becomes more potent with each passing year.

The translated lyrics bc oyy Too many years have passed since my love for you I have nothing left to keep on this love be lamented Still I can feel the wind blowing deep inside Through these wounds you left in my heart that’ll never be healed One eye of mine can see what tomorrow is But the other eye of mine is still lost in the yesterday Oh, I would give it all just to fall asleep In the cradle of your love like before, sound and peacefully My dried up eyes won’t shed no tears, can anyone please cry for me? THE REAL FOLK BLUES Just tell me now, what is real sorrow like and how it feels A life that’s soaked in mud is not that bad If you live it through just once, with no refrain You gotta end it all, no regrets How come your only hope turns into despair? Let yourself again be trapped in these fake, shallow chances Somebody answer me, ‘What is good, what’s bad?’ Nothing more than the coin in your hand having two sides How many more years have to come to make my scattered heart get healed? THE REAL FOLK BLUES Just tell me now, what is real joy like and how it feels You try to reach for things that shine like gold Don’t be tricked by their flitting light THE REAL FOLK BLUES Just tell me now, what is real sorrow like and how it feels A life that’s soaked in mud is not that bad If you live it through just once, with no refrain You gotta end it all, no regrets

When I first saw Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim in 2003, it became my absolutely favorite anime. Been seeking something, anything that gives me the rush that this anime does. I was truly overwhelmed with its skill to make me feel emotionally invested at a time when I never wanted to feel a thing at all due to a lot of personal trauma that I won't get into here. I've seen a lot of anime and rewatched Cowboy Bebop since and I've been trying to find that special anime to top it. For me, I found that Spy x Family is getting there but it's still moving along in manga and on the air. I'm on pins and needles to see how it all comes together which is incredibly exciting. I hope that it does because I love seeing a medium I love keep evolving. The fact that it's taken 20 years for me to even consider something else near the number one spot is a testament to how incredible Cowboy Bebop really is.

I'm surprised anyone, especially Mike, could ignore the music. You didn't even mention the seat belts, who still tour and play bebops ost regularly, reinventing the songs in true jazz fashion, and whooped ass in an online covid concert. They really rocked space lion...If you don't feel space lion your feelers are broken. Have you heard Sax Quartet? There's not many good composers that pulled off that trick. Kano has had successes but bebops ost took on a life, and a career, of its own. As someone raised by a man who loves jazz I've heard a lot of it, and this ost did transcends and exemplifies a genre that most people had next to zero exposure to when they saw they show. By the time Tank! ended for the first time they were officially converted. I can't think of another example of truely modern jazz on this level. It's bold and new while in touch with the roots of the art form and true to the precepts of jazz. The thing is, the anime is the ost, the ost is the anime, that absolute flawless victory is the fuel in the space jet that is bebop. You even experience the anime like a good album. You groove on it, you feel it. Each episode is unique but somehow forming an overall narrative and vibe. You turn them on and nod along, relishing the high points and the lead ups, reveling in how well crafted and masterfully executed these story beats and themes are. You come away with them stuck in your head, not necessarily as a story but as a groove to get lost in, to carry you through your day and become your background music for a while. Bebop is not just a classic anime, it's an ongoing musical phenomenon

This is the reason I follow this channel. Stories of passion literally change the world, change history. Artists who know that this may be their only shot and not caring, just putting their whole heart into their stories all the way. There’s not a feeling more pure then passion, the unyielding passion of the artists who make these stories, the passion of the small or large group of fans who adore it, and the passion of those who take the risk to get these stories out. Hell man, this is the kind of stuff that’ll make you cry. Keep it up. See you later, Space Cowboys. Bang.

It's insane how Bebop aired 25 years ago and after decades of seeing anime and seeing quite a good number of masterpieces, I can't think of a single one that can top it. It could be a bit of nostalgia but even after trying to analise it objectively, I still think I haven`t seen a piece of art that trascends it's own medium like Bebop did for anime with many layers of complexity and with so much style.

Wow, amazing video sir. Bebop is defiantly top tier anime. It's animation alone still holds up today. Much like Akira. Rurouni Kenshin and Cowboy Bebop are what helped solidify my love for the genre. I do watch it at least once a year myself. As I've grown as a person. I've also grown to love the Jazz genre of music. Again, with the help of Bebop. The soundtrack is just, AMAZING!!! I have all the OST's on Spotify. One of these days I will get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. And yes, he will be named Einstein! I am very much a firm believer that this is a much watch for beginners into the fray of anime. It's essential to watch to see that anime is not just some hokey cartoons for geeks. It's a heavy mixture of Eastern and Western cultures. So much deep themes. Now the Netflix version.....haha.

What I hear you saying is: 1. It was just (barely) commercial enough to get greenlit. 2. It was noncommercial enough to be left alone by upper management since they never had that much faith in it to begin with. 3. It was good enough to inspire the lower management types most directly involved with it (the animation studio, Bandai Visual, the dub company, Cartoon Network) to make it the best possible show it could be, and promote it in the best possible, practical way it could get an audience. 4. It was really that good.

This is so interesting and it explains why it’s kinda forgotten in Japan except for anime historians, but so popular over here. It’s like Evangelion of the west. It’s definitely one of my favorites, and it’s so cool that it was playing for years. I honestly just think that Cowboy Bebop is just good television, anime or not. Also it’s not a seinen.

For some reason that first scene with the rose is bone chilling with the music and the setting

I bought all of the bebop soundtrack cds back in the day. They were all amazing. That being said, what made bebop stand out was how it fused the elements that you mentioned. Yes, Noir, western, action and sci fi had all been done, but it had not been done TOGETHER. Bebop was a fusion of multiple genres interwoven with a jazz type sound. It is the same formula watanabe used for samurai champloo. That fusion was something that hadn't been seen before, and we all loved it. I didn't watch evangelion until several years after i saw bebop.

I caught it halfway through it's first run in 2001 and that was all I needed. And then Adult Swim strates their anime block on Saturdays and I got to see so many more cool series. It's a perfect starter anime because it's both very good and also very easy to watch since it's such a short series.
