I think it has been well established that I love the #ResidentEvil series, but there's only so many RE titles to play. What's a guy supposed to do when he needs his survival horror fix, and that familiar feeling Capcom used to provide? Well, let me introduce you to the absolutely insane world of the Resident Evil #Clone and/or knock-off. In this volume, we'll be taking a look at a wide swath of games that hit the PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Sega Saturn and of course the PC.

A lot of people have been recommending games for the next volume, and I thought I'd include the current list of games that I've made so far. If you don't see something you think plays like classic Resident Evil, feel free to let me know! BTW, these games include some of my maybes. Games that need to be played before I decide they play like RE. Add to the list: Dead Space, Alan Wake, The Evil Within, The Last of Us, & also indie games like recent Daymare 1998. Then again, every games on my comment more inspired by RE4 specifically hehe Also, if you included Onimusha series, than for sure should include DMC series, especially when it comes to its inception.

I really liked the one with French actor, Jean Reno and all the time travel. I think he said it was #3? It's been a while and I think it was a rental. It was the first Onimusha I ever played and I'm playing Warlords on the Switch now.

The ObsCure series is one of my favorite RE-clone type games. It's basically the Faculty film in Video Game form, which was always a guilty pleasure movie for me. The second ObsCure is absolutely nuts with how the story unfolds & what happens to some of the characters.

I really enjoyed Obscure 1&2 too. I like how they were (sadly) "actually obscure" too... I had a lot of fun especially with the 2nd one (which I started with), playing co-op with my sisters. Its one of the only offline co-op horror games around IIRC which is a travesty to the genre. Yea I agree it definitely has a Faculty vibe to it. I don't think thats a guilty pleasure movie though, its a good 90's "tongue in cheek" horror IMO from a badass director. Shame the 3rd game got cancelled. I never even knew it was being made.

@@kkryder9176 A game can still be a clone even if its by the same dev. Bayonetta for example is mainly designed by the guy who did Devil May Cry, but the game is "obviously" a DMC clone because "its not DMC, yet its 95% the same gameplay mechanics". Its probably the only clone of a game thats so good that its even better than its predecessor, by miles.

Game had a really interesting atmosphere IIRC, but the main thing I remember is I could never tell WTF I was supposed to be actually doing. And then before you knew it, you had all these blue zombies chasing you around and you run to a dead end corridor and thats it, you're f*cked! Kind of reminded me of Clock Tower 2 (technically 3) on PS1. No idea WTF I'm supposed to be doing but somehow you make it to the 2nd part of the game (wake up in a hospital) and couple corridors later, you have all these blue zombies chasing you around, you're panicking like a motherfucker and everywhere you go ends in death. All the blue zombies in PS1 games... Just remembered Alone in The Dark 2... More blue zombies!

Evil Within 1 is probably my favourite game of all time. Evil Within 2 is probably the most disappointing a video game has ever been for me. I'd like to see Jared do a video that -completely validates my opinion- looks at Evil Within.

Evil Within 1 suffered from the worst pacing I've ever seen. Evil Within 2 was an improvement. Hands down.

@@enrique7934 Yes. The pacing was garbage. You couldn't run for more than five seconds for the first half of the game and the shooting was trash. The second game fixed all of that. Objectively better from a gameplay perspective. And if you like bad pacing, well I can't help you if you just like terrible story telling.

There is an unreleased US version of Deep Fear for Sega Saturn out there on the internet, and I can attest that yes it works perfectly with Pseudo Saturn Kai, so you can run it off of the disc(s) easily.

Neither JP or EU versions can be played on an American Sega Saturn; that’s the point of this version.

@@Blizzard-kf3qm you can run the Europe or Japanese versions with Action Replay, Pseudo Saturn, or a backup CD by just altering the region. The PAL version has issues with resolution though, so it's not a great option.

I've never played the first Obscure, but I did play Obscure 2, and I remember the multiplayer being really well done. It was a pretty decent little Survival Horror game, if not a bit weird.

Would like to see Alone in the Dark: New Nightmare. It feels heavily underrated. Maybe Tactical Rescue Assault Group too since that is basically Anime Resident Evil. Overblood would be interesting.

Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare was made by the same devs who did Cold Fear. Shame they got shut down after that game. Both were good games. TRAG is pretty neat. I'd also recommend Fear Effect 1&2 as well. Interesting mix of Resident Evil, Blade Runner, and Asian folklore/mythology.

Even the GBC version of Alone in the Dark has this "3D" fixed camera exploration (combat shifts to a top down view though, with terrible "music"). But that's where I played it first as I only had Game Boys, no TV, and it was seriously impressive to me.

Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn is its name in the states. Neat game and Under Siege 2 is a decent action film. He could check out a few Half Life horror mods too like the two Paranoia games and Underhell. They Hunger is a good one too.

Original Designer of the X-files game. Really awesome to hear people played and liked the X-files game. I was at The Collective where it was designed, but we all got pulled onto Buffy, so the implementation went to Black Ops and their engine.

Nintendo actually had the sanity mechanic from Eternal Darkness copyrighted. Good bet thats why no one else tried to implement anything similar in their games. The copyright expired in 2019, not sure if it was renewed.

The Faculty is such a classic. Every time you see it, you notice something new! Last time I watched it, I caught some foreshadowing about the fate of a character that I didn't notice before! With that reference, the description you gave about Obscure 1 and the graphics, I'm interested to give it a shot in my Xbox if I get a copy of it. Great video as always!

I have a special place in my heart for Cold Fear. I didn't have a GameCube so I couldn't play RE4 until they did the port so Cold Fear was my consolation prize. Plus it had such a unique setting.

AWWW YEAH, you don't know how happy i am to see this video on my sub feed. Been looking forward to this RE clone video since your Extermination review 5 years back. I'm also hoping to see some obscure non-horror RE clones like T.R.A.G and Fear Effect (both PS1) in your later volumes of this series :D And heres my vote to seeing an Onimusha retrospective!

I'd love to see an Onimusha retrospective! It's one of my favorite franchises up there with RE and enjoyed every single mainline entry, and it's odd they never continued it.. from what I can remember they sold and reviewed well back then. Also, one of Capcom's franchises that they didn't completely botch any of the mainline games, they were all solid experiences.

The title rings as either clickbait or just shitty ignorance. RE might've coined the term "survival horror", but this gameplay style has been around for years. By the time RE came out Alone in the Dark was on its third installment, and BioForge and Ečstatica were already out for years. And that's just the games that share the same exact perspective as RE. There were also Clock Tower and System Shock - "survival horror" games in all but the static 3D camera.

Yes exactly, so any RE clone is actually an AitD clone. In peoples defence though, I get the feeling most people who grew up in PS1 days just "honestly thought" RE was the first game of its kind because it was massively publicised. Like a lot of people think MGS1 is the 1st 3D stealth game when its actually Tenchu. Theres probably more examples too of innovative "first" games getting overshadowed by clones that were much more popular.

@@AvalancheReviews SH is more Alone in the Dark then RE, they sure looked at the success of RE and wanted to make a similar game but the final product is an actual survival psychological horror which RE really isn't. Nothing of SH can be said ''yes this screams RE clone''. The final product is a complete opposite of RE no matter how you look at it. SH is actually serious, more realistic and much deeper, have a different setting and way of storytelling, cameras, music, etc. Everything is different about them.

It's got some fantastic episodes, but it gets pretty annoying when after seeing countless ghosts, aliens, prehistoric monsters and people with superpowers, Scully is still like "BuT MuLdEr, ThErE mUsT bE a LoGiCaL eXpLaNaTiOn!!!"

If you grew up in the 90's (or even if you didn't) its one of the best TV series you'll have seen. I mean its not widely known as a legendary series for nothing ;D The only times I wasn't keen on the series is when they started injecting comedy into it to make it more "digestable to a wider more casual audience". The best episodes were the 100% serious vibe ones (which means, mostly the earlier series).

If you get the PC version from Steam, it's included, which is quite nice and something I'd love to see more devs do. I picked up both for sub $10 US a few years ago, although I'm not sure what the current price is.

@@AJadedLizard The copyrights are not renewed so some tracks are missing. However I didn't check which ones. I still have the PS2 copy of it which is the most complete one so far and don't have a need to buy it elsewhere. Still I am happy that the games are back at least on PC. Lacking or not, the mods can fix the issues.

@@troykapix5077 I would think the actual OST wouldn't have any missing cues, since the music in it would've been composed specifically for the game. I've not listened to it in a bit though.

@@AJadedLizard I know what you mean but I am talking about outsourced music which have nothing to do with the scores made for the game, they were also included in the original ST such as Sum41's few songs and some others but due to the licence ran out they didn't renewed it they are cut everywhere. There was a complete OST with the scores and ousourced music while now these is only a selection of them far as I've seen the last I checked.

Eternal Darkness needs to get an HD remaster for current consoles and pc. Nintendo doesn't even let ya buy it digital like they did on Wii. I'd like to try Vampire Hunter D, heard it's like a PS1 Devil May Cry than RE. And I have seen the two anime films too. Cold Fear is good. Shame the dev went under after releasing it. Part 2 hopefully will include: Galerians, Fear Effect 1&2, The Suffering 1&2, and The Thing.

Yea an ED remaster (hopefully a remake though) would be sweet. Glad to see I'm not the only one talking about Fear Effect too. Those games were sick, and possibly the most technically advanced RE (Alone in The Dark) clones on PS1 thanks to the BG's being videos. The Thing was really good too, but got too hard so I never got past a certain point. I STILL never played The Suffering 1 or 2. I couldn't get either of them working on PC. I think it was one of those sh*tty times when a game crashes because "your PC is too new, haha!".

Hey there, great video so far, just wanted to add that your pondering about sanity meter effects not being more popular is because they actually are but in much more obscure games. Usually from indie titles, but there is practically a whole genre of psychological horror games that play with this concept. I am hesitant to list any because I don't want to spoil them, but some famous examples are Undertale and One Shot. They may not be up your alley, but I figured you'd be interested in knowing. Keep up the good work!

Don't know if you would consider this an RE clone; but The Crow City of Angels game is probably the worst RE clone I ever played. Take the RE tank controls and cameras and turn it to a beat em up.

Regarding Sum41 via one of the devs on a Steam forum post: "Yes you're right, the song from Sum 41 is not there anymore for rights problem. Mighty Rocket doen't have the right to include this song in the game. It would have been illegal... Sorry about that guys. We would have also wanted to have it in the game."

Copyright lasts 5 to 10 years, depends of the contract and unless some people re-new their contracts. In this case small companies or individuals wont bother buying rights again or at all from others because it's a waste of money. I am just glad that the game is back at least.

What an awesome video! And as little side note, the fact we haven't seen more games attempting something similar to Eternal Darkness is because the "Sanity system" is patented, and I guess no one want to get the risk of a lawsuit. Keep up the amazing work, you are the best!

Now that you mentioned Darkwood, that game kinda does the "Random events" thing similar to the sanity bar from eternal darkness, but instead of just happening when the bar is low, it happens every single night, with real consequences that can doom your night if you don't have any backup plans for banshees, lights turning off, objects moving, etc. Darkwood is such an amazing game

This is such a great video. Very interesting seeing RE formula moulded into different shapes and sizes. I think Cold Fear and Obscure's premise is really solid.
