I am going to go against the grain and say that the Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory felt a a lot closer to the often cynical social commentary of the book. The Gene Wilder version is fun, but it misses the mark on having anything to say outside of some sentimental moral platitudes. Plus, the atmosphere and the body horror and everything just feels more believably sinister in the second film. I don't think Willy Wonka is or was meant to be portrayed as a aspirational figure. He's a dude who fired all his workers and went to Africa to find slaves who will work for chocolate, ok?

As someone who is terrified of oompa loompas, I really liked the Wonka movie. I hate the og movie and book, and the johnny depp version.
