One of the things I like seeing about older versions is their default look and feel. I find that when you do your theme modifications it kind of takes that away. In other words I find it more interesting to see visual differences between versions than see which user preferences are transferred during upgrade.

first leaked 10 build on BetaArchive (9780) already has the start menu (from the early TP builds)

MS designed a start menu for Windows 8.1, then dropped the idea, but I think the first insider build of Windows 10 already had it. In the months before final release they changed the way Start Menu program directories are listed (it seems they stopped using the Windows Explorer libraries to list them). This resulted in a limit of 512 items in the programs list, which they had to fix later.

@@D.G.M. There was a start menu in 8.1 but you had to get an optional KB update and then you had to manually select that you wanted to use a start menu instead of the start screen. Vaguely remembers doing it the minute the update became available before windows 10 was released because I despised the start screen. I'm sure it made sense for "touch screen" monitors but for older ones (even now doesn't own a touch screen monitor) it was just clunky and unnecessary.

@@Greylan Wait, there is? I don't remember any start menu option in Windows 8.1. I know they brought back the start button, but out of my 3 years using 8.1 I have never seen an option to switch to the start menu.

10:55 The loading animation being gray is probably because it is the same color used by Windows Server 2003. XP RTM/SP1 used green for Home Edition and blue for Professional; SP2 and later the blue remained and Home Edition and Professional got dropped.

You can use Generic Antiwpa to hacktivate windows vista beta builds, but also XP, 2000 and 2003

I know this video is old, but the reason why your only getting the windows classic theme on the build 5000 version of longhorn is because the process that crashed is responsible for theme service and audio service etc.

11:38 Generally Windows Setup I think since Windows NT allowed you to upgrade the current version of Windows just fine, if the version that you are trying to update to, has a newer Build number.

I think 5098 IS last pre-beta release and 5099 is beta 1 Vista first build. Thats why you can't upgrade

The Beta 2 Build did say you could do the upgrade if you are running XP SP2. Is it possible to upgrade the 5112 Beta 1 build to XP SP2 and then the Beta 2 Build?

Be careful listening to your viewers. Remember we are here because you did what YOU considered best, not because you did what some said in the comments. afaik youtube has a watch time statistic on each video, you should take a look at it and see if people just skip the section with the rambling. Never trust what a person tells you, trust what they do.

"Generic Host Process for Win32 services" was a bug, fixed in XP SP2. I had a lot of these messages.

10:33 It probably says "64-bit Edition" because that was the only "workstation" version made from the 5.2 base. They probably didn't want to add a new field to the setup dialogs for the architecture (32 or 64-bit), so they just changed the full name of the OS, which appears on all builds.

I've gotta say, I almost kind of prefer the old style of your beta os videos. I just liked to see your live reactions to various things about the beta, and I don't really care about the length of the video. I still enjoy your new scripted style of beta videos, but I like the old style a bit more. I also enjoy your rambling, by the way. Keep doing them every once a while.

Hey Michael, just thought I would let you know that I have 2 boxed copies of Windows XP Professional just like the Home version you have, they were both brand new when I got them and neither of them had the cardboard insert, so I assume Microsoft did away with that after Windows ME! By the way, love the rambling in the middle of the videos, I think it makes them better! :)

I have the box for Windows XP Professional Upgrade. The box is in new condition. There is no cardboard inside.

The driver signing problems will have come from the date you've set on the system making the signing certificate invalid (system date is probably set before the certificate date)

Windows xp media center edition 2005. It's also an add-on i think. And yes there is also xp 64 bit but only allows sp2!

For later post-reset builds, you may be able to trick some of them into offering an upgrade option by running the setup GUI executable inside one of the folders of the upgrade disc in compatibility mode - "Windows XP" (might not work for the standard setup.exe file, but rather instead the one you see inside one of the folders that immediately takes you into the Setup GUI).
