This video came up in my feed again recently - so glad it did as I found myself in the exact same situation (and with a brand new sail and borrowed mast!). Mindful of what happened to you I frantically swam the mast around and got just enough of the tip to the wave to avoid catastrophe. Thanks for posting these videos, great to have something to learn from!

As all long time windsurfers from Europe I dream about sailing these legendary bays, so I love watching these POV sessions and familiarise with the environment of each bay. Also there is no shame in saving yourself and the equipment from breaking shore waves with gnarly underwater rocks, it rather shows great skill!

Great to read your comment. Among the windsurfers there is no shame but when you walk that road back to the launch there are sometimes people driving by that will take the liberty to yell obscenities out there window at you... I think that is why we call it the walk of shame🤔

Thank you for posting this; it took some humility. It might help someone else know what to do in a similar situation. At least there weren't sharks in this West Side Story.

A long long time ago I got caught out in the evening on a short board where the wind just disappeared. In the channel we sailed it has the second highest tides in the world. I tried and tried to get on the board but with the chop and no wind it just didn't happen. After a while of waving for help as it was getting dark, the current took me into the next bay where a boat was just coming out of! There's never boats in that bay!!! I was so lucky but 30 years later, every time I fall in and there's no wind, I go through the same scary emotions as that day, regardless of where I am sailing! I love windsurfing more than anything else! 😊

Thanks for sharing the honesty! Let’s be clear, the swimming part was your “Navy Seal” training, the walk of shame is the walk of shame… I’ve been their a number of times for different reasons and now I feel better having watched you go through it!

@Dantanalicious glad to provide some level of humility. We all go through it more than once. Windsurfing in waves definitely keeps one humbled.

Used to surf at HoKeeps in Winter, and at roughly 1030 to 11am the windsurfers took over. Saw quite a few doing the 'walk of shame.' It looks agonizingly hard. Cheers.

Flip-flops! Flip-flops! My kingdom for a pair of flip-flops! I do wonder if carrying some really thin booties somehow (clipped to the harness?) makes sense for this sort of scenario, can't be nice on the feet. Thanks for posting the whole ordeal, both educational and motivational - especially for those of us who for whatever reason might find ourselves doing the walk of shame rather more than we would like!
@koav
@koav Год назад
Some kind of foot wear would definitely help in this situation as that reef shelf is full of sea urchins. But the annoyance of having booties dangling from your harness is outweighed by the rare occasion that I would hope to need them.

19:17 Heard that so many times in Guincho this summer 😅 This clip is makin my nostalgia flare up haha - 24:39 OG Local judging you hard haha And personally Dumps' smooth boulders over Lanes' cheesegrater anyday! 😵‍💫
@koav
@koav Год назад
Sure smooth boulders sounds better but the boulders in this little bay are 100% gnarly with deep gaps between them and waves dumping hard onto shore line. On top of that the incessent current rips you on and off the rocks as you try to scramble with your gear to safety. if there was someone on the shore to help grab my gear I think I would have gone for it.
@julienlg4513
@julienlg4513 Год назад
Hi, thanks for sharing your videos ! I went through the same misfortune this summer, quite luckier though because the mast broke when I was leaving the beach so I was like 50m from the shore. After coming back on the sand I thought I would have saved some energy by unrigging and packing in the water. Any advice on whether it's a good idea or not ?
@koav
@koav Год назад
@julienlg4513 I think you did the right thing by not unrigging your gear. In the time it takes for you to unrig your equipment the current will either pull you down towards Pavilions or out the channel (depending on the ay) which will leave you in a very undesirable situation. Sometimes it does make sense to unrig but usually if your are close to shore it is best to get swimming immediately towards the best possible exit point.

How do you have mount your GoPro for this epic Perspektiv while windsurfing?
@koav

I have the GoPro mounted on the front of my helmet just above my eyes where it does not distract my vision.

Is there someone else here who had to do a walk of shame for going too much UPwind and not being able to come back downwind?! 😊 My 1st time with very strong wind I was overrigged (for the skills I had back then), with an unretractable daggerboard and with no food in my stomach... 😵‍💫 So, I couldn't sail even at beam reach. I even thought to come to the shore by swimming, but I was too far out. Lastly I committed to a long semi-planing upwind tack to the last chunk of the beach. Then, long W.o.S. on the PEBBLES. 😭 (how many precious lessons I learnt that day!)

Dude you are going like a Rocket.. But your boom is way to High. It has to be between nipple and shoulders. The Weight of the Sail is not on your harnness but on your Arms. Lower the boom and make the harness cords as long as the Elbow is to a Fist hand around the boom. Put your front leg streched and front leg bended or curved this is the Wright position. Don't get me wrong your doing a good job..you getting more Control out of it and I won't be so tirering.. Good luck.
@koav
@koav Год назад
Thanks for the feedback. The GoPro might make it look like my boom is high but in actual fact it is very low for my height 6'5" (198cm). I ride my boom at nipple height or even a little lower to force me to bend my knees when wave sailing. The Harness lines are 32" long but some Pro sailors like Kevin Prichard use lines that are 24"... I think your Harness lines are more of a personal preference.
