The Russo-Finnish Winter War of 1939-40.
Candida pro causa ense candido!
The Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union, David and Golliath, good and evil, democracy and totalitarianism, freedom and slavery, a defensive struggle against the Third Aggressor of WWII.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, a native Ukranian and later the leader of the Soviet Union, did remember this war very well:
"I had firsthand knowledge of what happened, including the strategic miscalculation on our side. The very day the war with Finland started, I was in Moscow with Stalin. He didn't even feel the need to call a meeting. He was sure all we had to do was fire a few artillery rounds and the Finns would capitulate. Instead, they rejected our terms and resisted. There was a false sense of confidence on our side; a few days would pass and we would polish off the Finns. But that didn't happen either. Many of our troops were ground up by the Finns...
Stalin lost his nerve after the defeat of our troops in the war against Finland. He probably lost whatever confidence he had that our army could cope with Hitler. Stalin never said so, but I came to this conclusion watching his behavior. We soon realized that we had bitten off more than we could chew. We found ourselves faced with good steel reinforced fortifications and effectively deployed artillery. The Mannerheim line was impregnable.
Our casualties mounted alarmingly. In the winter it was decided to bypass the Karelian Isthmus and to strike a blow from Lake Ladoga to the north where there were no fortifications. But when we tried to strike from the rear, we found ourselves in an even more difficult situation than before. The Finns, who are a people of the North and very athletic, can ski almost before they can walk.
Our army encountered very mobile ski troops armed with automatic high velocity rifles. We tried to put our own troops on skiis too, but it wasn't easy for ordinary, untrained Red Army soldiers to fight on skiis. We started intensively to recruit professional sportsmen. There weren't many around. We had to bring them from Moscow and Ukraine as well as from Leningrad. We gave them a splendid send-off. Everyone was confident that our sportsmen would return victorious, and they left in high spirits. Poor fellows, they were ripped to shreds. I don't know how many came back alive...
And so the war with Finland ended. We started to analyze the reasons why we were so badly prepared and why the war had cost us so dearly. I'd say we lost as many as a million lives...
There's some question about whether we had any legal or moral right for our actions against Finland. Of course we didn't have legal right. As far as morality was concerned, our desire to protect ourselves was ample justification in our own eyes."
(A citate from the memoirs of Nikita Khrushchev)
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
During the Winter War the Finns lost 26,662 people by fighting the Soviet Union. If they had given in to the Soviet demands, like the three small Baltic states, the chances are that they would have had over 400,000 people killed. It seems that they made the right decision, and at the same time saved the NKVD officers a lot of work. The Winter War was followed by peace, but on 25 June 1941 the Soviet Union resumed hostilities with Finland. Because the Soviets broke the peace, the Finns called it the Continuation War.
"Nobody respects a country with a poor army, but everybody respects a country with a good army. I raise my toast to the Finnish Army."
Joseph Stalin in 1948

Finland showed us that a small country can resist, a small country can survive and a small country does not need to obey the big empire. I am from Sweden. And I say, you finnish people, I am praod you did a very good thing for the world. Thank you Suomi, Finlandia!

@Mihey1978 No reason - Finland was not invaded by Russia but by USSR; Neither Stalin nor Berija were Russians. But it would help if Russians would not call the captured areas, from where everyone left (also ethnic Russians) as "sacred Russian soil" or talk about the "liberation of the old Russian town of Viborg" whose inhabitants (also Russians) fought against the "liberation" and left when it happened.

What are you two talking about for chrissake! There was Germanic influence in what is today Finland and the Finnish people long before Swedish settlement and before we became (gradually) a part of what became to be (gradually) a Swedish state (regnum). Genetics and linguistics prove this evidently.

Who can not know in Finland about the historical fact of joining of Vyborg and Russia in 1710, when Finland did not exist? Who can not know as creation of the Finnish state is historical consequences of foundation of Petersburg by Great Peter, or Finland citizens are the opponent of creation of the Finnish state? Why I can to see sometime of absurd revision of historical bases of the Finnish state?

@Motaro76 What you said makes absolutely no sense and is rude beyond comparison! Finns where considered the bravest soldier in our army (when Finland was a proving of Sweden), and the Swedish army was considered the most disciplined army during the 17 and 18th century.

@rakkipallo I see your point, but it is never helpful to fall to the same level of language use than the one you criticize.

@What you are saying sir makes no sense and is rude beyond comparison! Finns where considered the bravest soldier in our army (when Finland was a proving of Sweden), and the Swedish army was considered the most disciplined army during the 17 and 18th century. Finnish soldiers are and have always been hold as brave and fierce, something that cant be said for Russian or Ukraine soldiers.

@rakkipallo Really sad to follow this "discussion"; dont' know whom I would dislike most. We are all human beings and Russia has not been blessed by history. A Finnish peasant with bow and arrows could kill armored knights in our deep forsts, the poor Russian on his open plains could not. There you have the reasons for the cultural difference. Let's stop this racist nonsense, and start discussing. There are hard issues (Karelia..) but haterd does not get us anywhere.
