Andre's portrayal of Bubbles should have won every award going, a masterpiece performance amongst many others. No show ever was cast as good as The Wire
YES, and such a HIGH class. Those TV-show actors are often second to NONE, and have NOTHING to learn from big Hollywood block-busters movie stars with bankable names (especially when TV is THIS quality, as was the Wire!!)
@@jeanninel757 OMG don't ever think that. Watch it again. I'm 5 times in now and it gets better as time goes on because you notice little things, you see new themes and appreciate how everything blends together. It's a show that improves with each watch IMO. First time round I was annoyed at season 2 for not following on from season 1's story line, then 2nd time round I loved it. Its a show that evolves.
I just finished on Memorial Day, so I completed it recently too. Currently watching Boardwalk Empire where Michael K. Williams plays Chalky White, a character who lives in the peak of the Jim Crow laws. I'm very excited to see him again.
Hands down the greatest show in the history of American television. Amazing acting, incredible stories. Complex and fascinating. You can watch it every few years and be enthralled again.
I rarely care if celebrities die but I did when he did. He was so talented and played Omar so perfectly. MKW also brought Snoop onto the show who was also incredible.
I started rewatching the Wire last weekend and couldn't believe its been 20 years since i first watched it and its still holding its own in 2022. One character stood out for me.....OMAR LITTLE. RIP MKW.
Best show in the history of television series - scope, writing, characters, cast, acting, cinematography, realism, unpredictability, and raw emotion. Had it all. Been through the entire five series four times now over may years and I feel I owe it to myself to try and watch it every year from now on.
Just mad respect to Michael K Williams, Wood Harris and Robert Wisdom for their performances in the show. I particularly love the characters of Daniels and Carcetti for the reason that they show how the corruption in the system doesn't allow you to be good. Either you are corrupt or you are out. While Daniels takes the noble option, Carcetti doesn't. And then, there are characters like Colvin and McNulty who are willing to set it all on fire, just to weed out the corruption and get things done.
Notice the sign behind David. This show would not have happened the way it did if it wasn't for its predecessor "Homicide: Life on the Street"; wish that at least it would have been mentioned.
I say this often. The reason this show is so iconic is that that every single character had their own individual story that we all connected to because it was so believable. From Omar to Marlo. Avon to D’Angelo. Bodie to Wallace. Dukie to Namond. They all had incredible storylines on their own
Season 2 might be my favorite. Focusing on the smuggling and importation of the drugs right after mostly focusing on cops and drug dealers in season 1. Ziggy's story felt like a really good character portrayal of someone who becomes a mass shooter, someone tired of being treated poorly by everyone and just lashes out(and yes he was an asshole too, but what came first the chicken or the egg? I really don't know). Seeing Nick's parents get their house raided because of the drugs Nick was slinging was my first reality check of what Police/SWAT(etc.) raids look like, they're often not heroic rescues but a very escalated break & enter into a house with people who aren't directly involved with the crime that brought them there. Omar's trial episode testifying against Bird was entertaining as all hell, seeing Prezbo punch Valchek was great. It's the first time we really see Stringer handle things his business way, it leads to D'Angelo's death, and the excellent, excellent story between Avon and Stringer in season 3.
All suggestions for a 6th season would've been really interesting... immigration, health care, gun trafficking... The Wire could cover literally any theme and you know it's gonna be so educational and entertaining. Wish David Simon/ Ed Burns would work on a Netflix series or something, I think it'd be really important. They could make Series' indefinitely without going stale.... kinda like South Park but on a real level!
I remember watching Bunk & McNally drinking 🍸...wondering when they'd get shot or fall off whatever they were climbing on. Never happened. Same with Herc & Carver stakeouts. I began realising I had to take note. This was an adult show..no standard issue storylines.
Although I hated Marlo, Chris and Snoop with a passion during season 4, if it wasn’t for them, Season 4 wouldn’t be the greatest season of all time. Each season is magnificent in its own right but season 4 just hit different.
I would love to see a updated Wire series. Nayman as the new McNulty/Freeman, Michael as the new Omar, Dookie is as the new Bubbles. Bring back original characters, could have Nayman visit an ailing Wee Bey in prison. Daniels in politics. Greggs and Carver in high ranking police positions like major, deputy ops or commissioner. Presbo as school superintendent. Avon and or Marlo as semi-legit music producers or club owners hanging on to their old beefs and street cred. Bunk I would envision as retired and loving life collecting a pension and ss. McNulty would either have to be happily married to Beatie or fallen so low he's alone, working security and drinking the nights away picking up the occasional tramp from time to time. The series theme could be based off the new rise of gang violence through Drill rap. That would be something
@@GalactusOG I'm only watching cause they canceled the Punisher on Netflix but I personally prefer the The Shield We Own we This City definitely has alot less action then The Wire but they do make a good point about Police corruption in that show and how they get away with it
Sopranos vs The wire . Both very well written, but some of the sopranos is unwatchable. To many dream sequences and annoying characters that aren't even fun to hate
To focused on James Gandolfini character his POV where The Wire it shows different POV with each Characters also The Sopranos kinda unrealistic with the murders but then again they pay the cops to look the other way but the Feds was on them The Wire follows up with every Murder
R.I.P to Michael K. Williams and Lance Reddick 🙏🙏🙏🙏 The Wire is hands down one of the best television shows of all-time. To me, season 3 and 4 are the best seasons.
From 2005 to 2007 the Sopranos, the wire, Lost and Prison break were on air at the same Time... Greatest tv programa bar ever. Plus How I met You mother, Two and a half men (with Charlie) and Malcolm in the middle
@@aria.e Don't forget lost, I often feel people miss out on that show, And if you haven't watched the Sopranos already, then you should definitely, Incredible show
unpopular opinion but season 2 was my favourite..the most depressing and gritty...20 years later i remember the scene where nick sobokta is looking through the fence with tears in his eyes looking at the demise of the port...pure art...thank you to everyone involved in the show..you will go down in history!
I really hated season 2 tbh. I can recognize there were great aspects to it but it felt like the Greeks and port people in general became irrelevant almost instantly once it ended which left that season seeming aloof and disconnected from the overall narrative. I also didn't really like any of the port people in general. In part because they were all racist but I also didn't really didn't care for their characters much. Frank Sobotka more than the others I guess but he's like the pick of a shit-filled litter. They weren't super compelling or interesting. Conpared to the main cast, even though we all know theyre pretty much all assholes in one way or another, you kinda like pretty much all of them (apart from select people you're clearly meant to hate like Colicchio). Even Herc is hard to hate due to his dynamic with Carver and the good side of him.
@@joedorben3504 I think season 1 was so different, so brilliant that the shirt to season 2 was jarring. New scenario, new characters. Season 2 answered the question "how are so many guns, drugs, etc getting in the country?? someone must be in on it" and thats exactly what was explained and why in seas2 Sobatka was trying to keeo the jobs going, take care of his family, his union that he made a deal with the devil and was helping to destroy his own city
No exaggeration, when the show ended in 2008, the following year my wonderful wife gave me the gift of the series box set. Every year since I watched the whole series from beginning to end. That's right, I've seen this series 13 times and counting. Every fall it's a ritual.
On our Firestick, there is a 24/7 channel of The Wire. I watch it every day and I am constantly entertained. There are so many nuances and great moments of brilliance that are still relevant today. Best Show Ever.
I seriously lost count how many times I’ve watched all 5 seasons. It gets even better because the details and layers emerge. Wow. Phenomenal TV that goes so far past entertainment.
I'm on rewatch #4 and even having read synopses from the internet, it's always one little detail or phrase that you can find to make you say "aha" or "oh"
Wendell Pierce lookin like he ain’t aged a day. Such an amazing actor, they all are. Rewatched the whole series recently with a friend who never had for the 20th anniversary and it’s been so great to have all this content from the cast and creators coming out. Best show ever made.
Came here to find this exact comment. Then he's like "I'm really passionate about early childhood education". Testament to his acting and the writing that this sounds so bizarre coming from Marlo!
Jamie Hector. The first time I saw him on Bosch, I yelled "fuck you Marlo Stanfield!" lol. Jamie is awesome as Detective Jerry Edgar on Bosch and Bosch: Legacy though.
10:00: Now that Lance Reddick is also now gone, it is hard to watch him fight back tears and struggle with talking about the Omar character, and Michael K. Williams. Some really raw emotion. 😢
Dominic West nails the American accent perfectly but when he fakes having a British accent while faking his American accent in Season 2, that’s beyond next level impressive lol
Season four was the best, season two was a close second. Also, it will never not be crazy to here Jamie Hector talk and find out he’s a real nice and educated dude. In my head it’s like Marlo actually left the streets and became an acting coach
bro what the fuck season 2 is a close 4th place, and close as in if the 5th didnt have that god awful fake serial killer plotline it'd be the worst season.
@@joedorben3504 First off, I enjoyed the Season 2 plot. It was a nice refreshing storyline. The only part that I think could have done without is Ziggy Sobotka. He was just annoying. I did enjoy watching Frank, the Greek, and Spiros though. Secondly, the fake serial killer plot was to show how badly the police was underfunded, so McNulty has to create a fake case in order to get the money for the real cases.
@@Sully0020 I respect that, but I wasn't really too thrilled with the City Government plot. I loved Stringer and Avon's plot, but I just felt like the city government plot was dragged on too long when it was clear as a crystal that Carcetti was gonna win.
The Wire not winning a single Emmys is a disgrace. A member of the Academy said they couldn't relate to the show. Someone recently said that they (Academy) couldn't relate to black people in America but they can relate to fictional dragons...🤔
Season 4 should have got an Emmy, a congressional medal of honor, added to the Library of Congress, added to school and college syllabi, sent to space so that aliens could be like 'this species has empathy and intelligence'.
I just finished The Wire for the first time last night, here I am smiling ear to ear seeing these actors and yet turns out a few have passed away! RIP! The biggest shock is how Marlo became an actor named Jamie Hector, I knew he wanted out of the game but damn Marlo, you did it! : )
"Marlo" (Hector) is also great in Amazon Prime series "The Bosch", where he plays "J.Edgar" the partner of Harry Bosch. (there are also some other same actors actualy, like "Daniels") Have you seen the Bosch? It btw just had released Spinn-Off
Man.. Jamie Hector was so good that just seeing him have a genuine smile is off putting. It's like I need a reminder of "Oh yeah, this guy isn't the Terminator."
Lance Riddick (Daniels) has also passed since this video. RIP Lance Riddick, Michael K. Williams (Omar the Terror), Robert Chew (Proposition Joe) and Reginald Cathey (Norman Wilson, Tommy Carcettis black campaign manager). All legends.
I personally agree. Season two was disturbingly deep with smuggling drugs/women into the USA through the ports and season 4 is so damn emotional because of the kids' impoverished environment, peer pressure, the educational system, etc. By and large, the Wire is such a landmark series that I can watch it over and over with the same enthusiasm as if I'm watching it for the very first time.
I have no idea how TF these Wire actors are able to sit down because THEY ALL acted their asses off. Ain't no weak character or actors. No actor phones in his/her roles. Casting was also 1000% perfect.
I don't think there has been another series with such a huge ensemble cast where everyone was memorable and delivered to such a high degree. The Wire is just on another level.
That's my thing about this show. I haven't watched it in 3 years or so, but I could easily rattle off the name of twenty characters because I cared for those characters.
You're absolutely right. One other thing - the performances of the child actors were incredible. To this day I don't know how they got such good performances out of so many different young actors.
0:50 Dominic must be asking the wrong people because the rest of the cast and most of the "The Wire" RU-vid community, from what I've seen, seems to be in agreement that season 4 is the one that took The Wire from just a great show to culturally significant.
i've noticed white viewers tend to rank season 2 as the 1st or 2nd best (for obvious reasons, they pretend to be impartial but they absolutely love to see themselves on screen)
Shame Clarke Peters wasn't on. Cool Lester Smooth. Natural Poh-lees. Wendell Pierce's idea of a prequel film would be great. It was done for the Sopranos.
True story: im leaving the planet fitness on Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn 2016. 1030pm middle of winter. No one really out. I see Marlow come walking out a store on a dark back street. Just me in him. I was like ooohhh shit. He shook my hand then i told him my name is actually Omar. And i told him i felt like i was about to be put in a vacant 🤣🤣. Hes a tall dude and intimidating looking but was really nice
This is what I hate about hypocritical Hollywood, they put films up for Oscars, Toni Awards etc. when a series that literally knocks everyone off their feet, with excellent writing & acting it is more or less ignored. This was one of the best series I have ever witnessed& the other was Body Guard from England, another series with top-notch acting in every sense of the word than they are reluctantly mentioned. The wire from the beginning to end kept you on the edge of your seat with excitement and suspense. Kudos and respect, this is what television should be about.
Marlo, chris and snoop. These 3 guys literally gave the characters a stunning villainy. You literally hated the cold blooded attitude and murder, wished their roles died soon. Brilliant brilliant performance. The best show ever!
@@karapastikmeeting the actor who played Marlo Stanfield at a Babies R Us of all places😮 he seems like a cool guy but that would certainly be… disconcerting right off the bat.
Pretty easily The Wire is the greatest TV crime series of all-time. It showed you life in Baltimore from all different perspectives. The drug lord, his family and soldiers. The Police and their leadership team. The Politicians and the back room deals they make for power. Even life from the view of the school kids was so realistic. The character development so superb that characters like Bubbles, Omar, Stringer Bell, Avon Barksdale, Bodie, Clay Davis, Tommy Carcetti, Proposition Joe, Bunk Lester Freamon Frank Sobotka, Bunny, Kima and others will forever remain ingrained into our memories. RIP to Prop Joe, Omar, and anyone else we lost from our Wire Family. WHAT A SHOW!!!!
@@NiniEJ yup, go back. It's a rough one, but all the pieces really matter. You just have to follow along, because there are a couple arcs in that season where you can compare to other people/relationships in the other seasons and come to the conclusion that drugs aren't the only thing that can tear people apart
“Any post industrial city.” Such a key statement. One of the main reasons for the hood. People point to gangs, drugs, etc. but once the factories shut down and unemployment went up, it greatly effected our black communities.
It effected all the communities really, like across my grandfather's house from left to right used to be Italian run factories for blocks and blocks, my grandfather worked at the docks in Philly and there were Italians there too. Now, it's mostly Spanish.
BUBBLES! Omar, Dukie, Daniels… McNulty… Cutty… I mean, once you know these characters, and the whole The Wire story, you are changed as a person. All the characters.
