He also expects to be a kingpin in 2-3 years. So basically as he sees it, he's gonna start at corner boy, then work his way up to kingpin in 2-3 years, then do that for a few years, and use the money to finance his schooling to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. A somewhat unusual route to say the least lol
I grew up in the streets of Jersey. In all of my youth, I only knew of one corner boy to become something bigger, and it wasn't a kingpin. He became a soldier eventually and ended up taking the fall for the real kingpin who didn't get indicted until some 15 years or so later on a RICO. That "corner boy" got 40 years for basically being a buffer for the higher-ups. I don't care who you are, or how much try to convince me that you will rise up through the ranks, or how many lies you tell yourself by flashing a roll of bills. It's all BS. You have a better chance at passing a college class than you do at being a successful old drug dealer. The game is not made to be won.
Its the sad part isn't it. These kids have responsible adults they want to be like (ben carson) but they see no real possibility of them ever getting there.
Yeah, this is not right at all. He's the one in the class who's an alcoholic, not a corner boy. So he stays quiet because he doesn't know anything about it.
The reason The Wire was so good-- its unsentimental, cold eye-- is captured in this scene. These kids aren't really kids; they just look like it. Really they're just raw movers of capital, training for optimum efficiency. They don't take school seriously because they're already full-time workers.
Nah they kids, shown to be still wet behind the ears and oblivious to their material circumstances, whether it’s because they’ve subconsciously muted out their environment or just aren’t yet truly awake to the coldness of their world
@@dysplasiagiraffe4845 Really both of those statements are true. Those kids aren't really kids, they're full time workers with very adult responsibilities. And yet they are definitely still kids, because they aren't conceptually aware of their place in the system in which they operate or the consequences of their lifestyles. Hence the disconnect in this particular season of the Wire; these are children yet not children, and all the previous seasons of the Wire explain why.
...Or not a lot of people saw it on TV when it was airing and now due to people having more access to the internet cult hits like this can grow due to exposure to a new audience?
Ben Carson was a once in generation neuro surgeon. I may not agree with his policies but if I have an impossible brain tumour he would be at the top of my list
Good call. Darnell is one of my favorite from the group too. He's got a good head on his shoulders, just lacked direction. That's why the Colvin-becomes-a-teacher storyline was so intriguing.
To me, Darnell has the potential to be the next Avon. While everybody was running off at the mouth about what makes a corner boy, he was the only one silent. BUT........that's also potential to be the next Lester Freamon, for the same exact reason.
In a later episode, when Bunk and McNulty are having dinner with each others kid, Bunk reveals that his son wants to be a pediatric surgeon. Made my head hurt a bit.
@Marc Dumont if you like that, you'll love that I drew a bear on my face and wore a jacket to dress up as Ben Carson for a presentation in elementary school
Albert's expectations were too far fetched. His comment about him wanting to be a neurosurgeon was only for the adults, but he also thought that you can get to the top of the game in 2-3 years, like it's really that easy.
this is such a great depiction of how our society fails to accomadate for certain personality types. The Wire is deep, the only thing these deviant kids care about is the game, but can only follow their passion against society's standards...
Why don't you admire him now? You don't admire the motivation, the hard work, the sacrifices he made. Since we're talking about The Wire - don't admire the "code" he had, the devotion, , and ultimately the courage he had to take the opportunity this country gave him? What changed that he was once admired and no longer admired. Is it because he has conservative values? Is it because Carlson is a Republican? Just curious.
@@Brooklyn3955 hes a creationist for 1. He sold out his community for the most racist low hanging fruit platform in the country. Republicans foam at the mouth for a black person who puts their own people down. Right now he’s actively working on an anti science anti intellectual crusade because trump told him to. He’s a sellout and a disgrace to the medical profession.
You admire him because he put in more time and effort than anybody else to achieve what he wanted to. YOU do that much work and then have other people telling you you need to pay more in taxes. My ass. That’s why you’re not a pediatric neurosurgeon. Get on his level and then you can speak on it.
@@Brooklyn3955 mans was unfit to be the head of hud. The only reason trump did that was because he was black. He fucked over it and fucked over people and made his time there comedy hour that he didnt take seriously at all. But i guess being successful washes away all the sins of that and only way i can call him out if i was successful as him
@@kitchenfloorbreakfastsandw8239 when you simp for these rich, non tax paying scumbags who have zero American values, hope Carson is sugar daddy. You're pathetic, being knowledgeable in one field doesn't mean you're qualified in history or economics - both subjects is an fool about.
While they all excitedly shouting over each other about what makes a good corner boy, the one cat whose sitting there rubbing his fingers without saying a word, says the most. I bet if Marlo were in this class as a kid, he wouldn’t have said shit either
yall if yall don't wanna have this life yall gotta do better in life yall can't skip school no fighting no drugs none of that if yall wanna have a good life
No no no, it's because we aren't throwing enough money at the schools. DC spends over $29,000 per student. Yet, 83% of 8th graders are not proficient in reading.
What I don't understand is why the girls there are interested in the game. I mean they're clearly never gonna be slinging - the only female player in the show is snoop and she's more of an anomaly - so why bother?
I'm so glad Namond ends up taking a different route because he talks too damn much, if The Wire continued and he was still on the corners he be dead. He remind me of so many of these pretend gangsters who just want to fit in and sound cool, smh. I didn't really like his character.
@herosmash32 who cares..me and bodie have talked on the phone couple times but im not braggin on it nd i dnt think any1 would hate..so who will hate off u that a boy who only had a few scenes n this whole series lives down the street frm u lol
