the method explained worked well with the cow's weight because people already knew what cow's generally weigh but there is no way a person has any idea what a random number would be so please Mr brown don't fool around

The logic is flawed here. "The Wisdom of Crowds" means that if you have a jar full of jelly beans, most people are likely to estimate the volume of the jar slightly incorrectly, the volume of a jelly bean slightly incorrectly, etc. However they're making an educated guess and over a large enough crowd their personal incorrect estimation will settle close to the middle. The lottery on the other hand is random. There's no educated guess to be made. Before anybody says "Well then how did they get three numbers correct?" I'd like to remind you that this is Derren Brown.
@Necrophadez
@Necrophadez 2 года назад
While I agree with your comment. There were two mathematicians that used probability and previous numbers to figure out the most likely numbers to next appear, and they won the lottery. I forget their names though.
@fathertedczynski
@fathertedczynski Год назад
@@Necrophadez Sheer coincidence. The lottery is random; there is no dependence on the past, so anybody that claims they predicted the numbers through past results is simply mistaken.

if this had actually happened, then everyone would have had to guess around 1 or 2 for the first ball (which was actually 02) since there cant be negative numbers. this would be highly unlikely if peoples guesses were truly, or at least a little, random. also the thing with the bull happened because the bulls weight was not random, people were able to at least have a range that the real weight must fit under, so some people guessed up, some down, and the average was the answer. but lottery numbers are random, so there is no range to narrow them down, nobody can get close.

It's not real. What he said makes no mathematical sense. It's quite clearly a 'misdirection'. He even admits in his books that he is an entertainer and so much of what he does is fake.

I do think Derren is really impressive but this video is madness! So I may be wrong here but surly with this method you are just going to get closer and closer to the middle number. For example, unless everybody said the number one then the chance of number on coming up would be zero (not taking into account rounding error.) However the chance of one coming up is equal to any other number. In the example with the oz the method works because people are aiming for a set weight (mass) but in the lottery there is no set target, any number can be picked. This video makes no mathematical sense!

@the-brick-train

that's what i was thinking! it would be impossible for them to predict '2' in that method because it would require the 6 guesses to be some kind of combination of '1,1,2,2,3,3'. All the guesses are generally gonna be towards the middle, like, it'll be like an upside down quadratic graph.
@ParawhoreLoL
@ParawhoreLoL 10 лет назад
People don't understand this because thats how Derren wanted them to be. The numbers are an orchestrated game in order to keep you thinking about the wrong aspect of the trick.

I believe this whole thing about the wisdom of crowds is actually misdirection and he often adds these narratives to his magic tricks to misdirect you from how he really does it and I think a lot of times he's got people paid off I can think of several things where he actually does pay people off.

Guessing the weight of an ox is completely different to predicting lottery numbers. You can have a rough guess at the weight of an ox. Some people will be a little too light, some people will be about right, and some people will be a little too heavy, so averaging it out to get a reasonably accurate answer makes sense. But a ball coming out of a machine could be anything from 1 to 49 and there's nothing to base your guess on, so it's pointless. It's just people guessing and then some maths.
@joedeshon
@joedeshon Год назад
Absolutely true! The people at the fair were not "guessing" the weight of the ox; they were making predictions based on knowledge of the appearance of the ox. But with a lottery, everything is completely random. Picking the "average" of 24 random numbers will, of course, give you numbers that approach the mean of all the available numbers. If they had repeated the experiment a thousand times, they would have found that the predictions for all six balls were the same number!

Around 2 years ago I saw a video with a similar concept with "Guess the Jellybean" and the result was only 3-5 jellybeans off or something. I then went to my school and told around 50 people to guess a number from 1-100 and the answer narrowed to 50, exactly halfway which was quite amazing. I then said I would try the lottery like this when I'm 18 (was 13 then, Now 16) and I can't believe Derren beat me to it xD

You are so clever. I love the logic in your brain.
@danielmackay4362
@danielmackay4362 10 лет назад
No amount of cleverness can allow you to predict something that is complete chance. The hook at the beginning was clever: all the experts would be close so it is likely that the average would be the weight of the cow. There are no educated guesses in lottery. There is no logic in his brain that would permit such a prediction.
@luxe.8419

Daniel Mackay I completely agree, but there is still genius in the premise. He is using suggestibility to make people believe in things that are crazy, and that's still amazing in itself.

Cayleigh E. I suppose. He does, of course, seem to be able to manipulate people in a rather extraordinary way, though I am not sure how much of it is misdirection rather than psychology.

I look forward to the passing of this How To series of videos. I thought I was okay with patter in general to disguise tricks, but these rub me the wrong way for some reason. I've been trying to put my finger on it; the closest I've come is that they bring to mind "psychics" who brazenly tell customers their knowledge or memories are wrong and that they'll discover the real meaning behind the "psychic reading" in time (when in fact the fraudster is hiding her/his work/failings and putting blame on the customer who may be cajoled into saying "Oh, now I see what you meant"). Lying at best; insulting to intelligence at worst.

+herp Derp Though the problem with the group is that they needed to put numbers from smallest to biggest which they haven't since all averages were around 30
@JoshSideris
@JoshSideris 7 лет назад
It would still be completely random, but with a biased probability distribution. If that's the case, the only valid strategy would be to pick the numbers that appear most often. Your chance of winning using this strategy would still be so astronomically low, on average you'll lose far more than you'll make.

Man, I have to say I respect the art, but I have zero respect for perpetuating false information like this. I have family members who blew their entire fortune and ruined their lives (and the lives of everyone around them) via gambling. All this video is doing is taking advantage of the average uneducated person for the sake of TV ratings. Crap like this should be banned, just like we retract fraudulent medical research (and hold those responsible for it accountable).
