The Wise Man's Fear Vlog - Full Spoilers and Reactions
#rothfuss #kingkiller #nameofthewind
I am now waiting with all of you for the third book in the King Killer Chronicle, The Doors of Stone. I have finished The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss, the sequel to Name of the Wind and the second book in the King Killer Chronicle. Instead of doing my typical review style I decided to do a Vlog of sorts for The Wise Man's Fear. These are my in the moment reactions after finishing sections and contains spoilers for both NOTW and TWMF.
Big shout out to ‪@CapturedInWords‬ for making some amazing content around this series and honestly, being my motivation to start this second book.

The best part about bast's reaction to the ctheh is him mentioning that the ctheh shows up on the covers of tragedies, then you look at the cover of Name of the Wind.

Only watching the first sections of this because I just reached Chapter 51/40% myself (thank you for including chapter sections!), and I honestly have to agree that at least up to this point, I'm enjoying it more than NotW. There's some downs but also some really great triumphs, and his friendships feel so much better explored... It is meandering, but enjoyably so? Is kinda like Hobb in that way, where getting a strong feel for Kvothe's day to day helps me feel grounded in his world and empathize with him more.

Loved this vlog, felt like being on the journey with you. Rothfuss' books are full of dualism, parallels, echos and different shades of the same thing but also differenttakes on the same recurring motives. I wonder whether you already read the two novellas (on Bast and on Auri), which are not only beautiful but also bring more depth to these characters, the magic system and Rothfuss' world, all the while not answering any major questions. Looking forward to your reviews of these books. Btw. you picked up on so many things but not on Kvothes mother being Netalia Lackless, Meluans' sisters, making Kvothe the heir to the Lackless box. And The Chronicler, Devan Lochees, also comes from this family, though from a different branch (as explained by Alvarons' arcanist, Caudicus).

Wait is his mother for sure that person? Like fully confirmed? And thanks!
@Swiergotka78
@Swiergotka78 5 месяцев назад
@@thefantasynuttwork Let's say 99% sure - she was noble born, Kvothe's father wrote a song about her calling her Tally (could be short for Natalia), and she got pretty upset when Kvothe sang an unflattering children's rhyme on Natalia Lackless. And Natalia Lackless fell in love with a Rou and run away with his troop. Also, Meluan reminds Kvothe of someone, it's like he knew her from somewhere. So either Natalia and Laurien are the same person or Rothfuss is deliberately messing with us, cause it all just sticks to well to be coincidental. BTW Are you going to review the other books? That would be amazing!!!

Denna is NOT a prostitute. She is an independent woman trying to live her own life is a world that does not generally permit women to be independent. Although not a perfect analogy, Denna is more like a Geisha. Her "job" is to be charming and fun to be around, so that men gift her things, which funds her independence. That's not to say she's never had sex, but she's done it on her terms, when she wanted to, but NOT as a simple money-for-sex transaction. In fact, the reason she leaves so often is (it it implied) that once a suitor has been around enough to expect sex, it's time for her to move to, to avoid having sex. If she was really a prostitute, that is exactly when she would stay.

"Even a prized horse is ridden eventually" .. Denna is 100000% a p'tute. I think Rothfuss at first didn't want commit to her being a "working girl". But then quickly realized how nonsensical his story for Denna was. Oh, she goes out with scummy guys like Ambrose but never puts out? She just takes "advantage of the courtship rituals". Can you imagine a guy like Ambrose paying for Denna's room, buying her gifts, taking her to dinner but never touching her? Or does it sound logical to you that these aristocrats who all know who's who among the upper classes etc and can easily check wouldn't know that Denna is just a commoner and a grifter? The first scene we meet Ambrose the guy is pressuring, cornering and harassing Fela in the library. The reality is that whenever you see a guy that's got Denna on his arm, he will be banging her that night. On top of that, she doesn't just prostitute herself to the upper classes. She takes advantage of middle class and poor men who she tricks and robs. She justifies it by the fact that almost all men she ever met have been horrible and only after one thing. Eventually things get too serious, she gets too well known, some salty lover or wannabe lover gets too loud and then she changes her name and leaves. I think Rothfuss realized how ridiculous it would be if Denna was somehow still this virgin love interest just witty enough to "scam all the evil horny dudes without ever getting caught or touched by them". But it might also have been a way to expose how naïve Kvothe can be or how blinded he is by his infatuation with Denna. If I remember correctly Kvothe still seems to not fully realize what Denna does after he listens in on her and that girl. He also doesn't get much more or less jealous when he sees her with Ambrose. Can you imagine seeing the girl you care for so much on the arm of the scummiest guy you know, a guy that you've already "saved" another girl from. That said, even though I liked the second book, it was also a mess. The pacing goes from nothing happens for 2/3rds to "he becomes a blood mage, fantasy tai chi, kung fu master and then learns to have sex from a female sex god fairy. Ok fam. The Adamre not knowing where kids come from is the dumbest thing I've ever read. I'm sorry no amount of philosophizing and trying to justify it makes sense. No people EVER would be completely oblivious to how kids are created. The scene with Fela and Simon is soooo unnecessary and dumb. What was the point of that? It just made Fela seem horrible. Humiliated Simon (that's the kid that Fela ends up with right? It's been a while). Fela out of fkn nowhere talks about how much she has a crush on Kvothe, but how she'd never date him because "he'd break her heart" ..uhhh. Simon sits there like "am I a joke to you". "Don't worry Simon, I'd never cheat on you, even though I can't keep my eye of your best friend and have a massive crush on him. I'm ok with settling for you, because Kvothe doesn't want me anyway! Isn't that great... aren't you happy?" Listen awkward moments like that happen, a similar thing happened to me years ago in college during an after party at a girls house, where she kept flirting with me in front of her boyfriend and it was extremely awkward and the guy was super uncomfortable (as was I). But I don't see the point of having that happen in this particular story. It just didn't fit, and only made Fela look bad and emasculated Simon just so we could pat Kvothe on the shoulder again for being a "ladies man" .. wasn't that already established when he started bragging about fn half of any town he enters. The maid that immediately wants to bang him "because she can see he's experienced now". The whole Felurian bit that was only really interesting because of the Cthea or whatever the evil tree is called. Also, fkn I HATE how Rothfuss describes combat and sex. They both sound the same. And they are both kinda bad. "he did a brown bear tickle followed by the thousand wings of summer". And Adamre's fantasy tai chi is also bad. It's cool to have some really good fighting martial art in your book. But why did it have to be tai chi lol.. it's basically tai chi. You're not going to be a good fighter just because you learned to balance your body bro, this guy has never been in a fight in his life.

I like NotW more than WMF still. That being said, the part in the fea is one of the best in the series! I think it's so terribly misread re: Felurian. To me she was always messing with Kvothe, telling him exactly what he wanted to hear/boasting about herself. She's a fairy, a predator, and he is a prized prey! Not to mention all the things we learn about the shapers, the stolen moon, THE CTHAEH, him calling her true name while looking like an angel??? The Adem part tho is where it tanks for me (and I think is the actual reason people don't like the book). At that point we're so far from the inciting incident for the journey, and the worldbuilding gets a bit ridiculous on top. The sex stuff there was weird for me, but not because of Kvothe but because there's this older woman using her young male student, so creepy! Denna's never been my fave tbh. I know it's all on purpose, and we don't get enough info on her for me to make an opinion this way or that. I'm just not convinced she cares for Kvothe beyond an acquaintance, even tho the narration tries to assure me she does. As to her master, the main theory is that it's Cinder/Ferule which would definitely be interesting!

I don't think Cinder is frightened off by Kvothe. I think it was most likely him sensing one of the Amyr coming his way. Kvothe was told by the Cthaeh that he was close to finding one.

A quote that makes me think that Bredon is an Amyr or a Chendrian is when the cthaeh says: "...the Maer is quite the extraordinary man. He's already come close to them though he doesn't realize it. Stick by the maer and he will lead you to their door... Whatever else you might forget, remember what I just said. Eventually, you'll get the joke." There's quite a lot of play on words in KingKiller, so "Stick by the Maer" sounds like Bredon, who uses a cane/stick, and is by the Maer most of the time when he not vanishes mysteriously with Dena.

Denna is a prostitute my guy. That's her grift. She tries to not sleep with her "benefactors" but if you check the chapter prize horse it becomes exceedingly clear that she does. Telling a young run away turned prostitute that if she's gonna work then she might as well do it properly and become a lady that has rich men pay for her room and shower her in gifts. The girl then asks "oh so I don't even have to sleep with them?" (It's implied the conversation is cut off while Kvothe evedrops) and denna replies *"Don't be ridiculous, even a prize horse is ridden eventually."* I'm paraphrasing but you get the point. Denna sleeps with the dudes that Kvothe sees her with. Eventhough it seems at first that she doesn't. And honestly this makes a lot more sense than her just getting gifts in some endless courtship ritual.

Great Vlog! I really enjoyed it. I too like TWMF more the TNOTW. I have never understood the camp of people that claim that Kvothe is immediately an excellent lover. Felurian NEVER says that. She says that he has "....You have some cleverness and natural skill, but you have much to learn." This is HARDLY a statement of him being a great lover. Yes, at first, she says that his lovemaking is like a "gentle summer storm" and that he's "like a dancer fresh upon the field", but those don't really imply that he's good. He asks her to teach him and she does, which further indicates that Kvothe has a lot to learn. Some people interpret her shock of it being his first time as implying that Kvothe is good. It's not. Felurian's whole existence involves sex, so it's just hard for her to comprehend someone who has never has sex before.

Interesting perspective! I’ll need to reread this section and think on it, I appreciate the comment!

I read this several years ago and have clearly forgotten a ton! I do remember there were 3 things I was fascinated about in this book. 1) I'm always obsessed with the odd, missunderstood, drunken-fist kind of master. So his character was always fascinating. 2) Naming itself was so fascinating to me! It almost feels like bhudists embracing nirvana and finding peace. That like soulful understanding of the world. 3) I felt like once he left the academy: the world became fascinating, I enjoyed Kvothe much more, and we really began to embrace growth as a thinker and a philosopher/theologian rather than a student of magic.

All three great points of the story!

The Adem section is what ruined this book for me. It was just too repetitive and Adem culture seemed like a less interesting version of the Aiel from Wheel of Time.

Loved those books even slightly more than Game of Thrones but after years I am absolutely not interested in the final book even it would come out. Wouldn't buy it.

Oh interesting! I’m indifferent, if it released I’d read it but not upset if it doesn’t

Quick thought on the Felurian but where she claims he's good in bed. The more I thought about that section after I finished the book, i started to think that her saying that may be part of her trap. In the sense, that she says this to everyone and this is part of how she keeps people going because once Kvothe calls the name of wind and calls her by her true name her behavior/attitude changes since she sort of fears him. This lead to her making a deal to let him live in exchange for the song/music, i don't necessarily believe she would let him go unless she had a reason to or couldn't keep him under her spell/control. Also I don't know if you caught it since you didn't mention it. Meluan Lackless is theorized to be Kvothe's aunt. Meluan has a but hatred for the Ruh and talks about her sister being taken away by one and back in NoTW there's a mention of his mom being royalty and leaving with his father. Plus when he sees her initially at the dinner, he makes a comment at how familiar she looks but can't place where from or why. I would also recommend reading The Slow Regard of Silent Things, since there's a couple things in that novella that spark some theory and it's about Auri (who doesn't love her). If you're interested in theories, look into the Caesura theory and the penitent king. www.reddit.com/r/KingkillerChronicle/comments/b21m38/the_most_direct_hint_about_the_king_killed_in_kkc/ www.reddit.com/r/KingkillerChronicle/comments/ruho27/the_true_meaning_of_caesura/

@@thefantasynuttwork yeah the aunt thing is really crazy. But the implications (if true) is that is part of the Lackless family and everything that Pandora's box opens up is really fun to think about.

There is also Kvothe's dad's poem that ends "To make my wife Not tally a lot less…” Netalia Lackless. Along with his mom getting upset over an unflattering Lackless song he picked up from some other kids.

I dont think the problem is the sexuality, is the fact that he is 16.... with a thousand years old faerie and his teacher.....

Oh I agree, and I said in any facet I don’t care for 16 year olds having sex, it’s never something I really want to read about anyways
