The night WOE announced They had booted Austin from the band, Issues was playing a show in Buffalo. They literally stopped mid set when they found out, announced what happened and chanted “the wicked witch is dead”
This series has been amazing. I would love to see a series for: A day to remember Abandon all ships I set my friends on fire Iwrestledabearonce From first to last
The mention of a skylit drive reminds me how much we need an ASD deep dive. I thought it was pertinent even back from the 2016-drama, but holy shit, the recent competing 2-a-skylit-drives now makes it even more necessary than ever
I loved a skylit drive but I’m actually not at all awake that there is a “competing 2 a skylit drives now” whaaat that sounds crazy. Also makes that Cali buds song I guess aged like milk
@@Corvy952 the two competing ASDs are the og lineup (minus kyle) vs. Jag ‘n Friends (he turned signals into ASD). Jag owns the name, so they’re called “A Skylit Drive” and the og line up goes by something like either ASD or “she watched the sky.” I’m not even entirely sure. It’s such a shit show.
Since you mentioned Capture The Crown for a second there, that might be an interesting video itself considering how they were dropped from Sumerian Records so quick. Great work though really enjoying this series man, keep it up 👌
@@montanamedia1736 no he didnt. I saw capture the crown on that talk your shit tour and they were really good live. As a matter of fact, i think that was there first time in the states
@@montanamedia1736 I've only seen them at warped around 2013 I think (remember seeing MMF playing Challenger so sometime around there) and yeah they were all over the place but they did have great stage presence and fan engagement, it just all felt kinda sloppy
Their new song "Red" is a huge track .... tells me their legacy is far from over. It was cool to learn the story from you. Love their new sound and vocals and how they've changed their style with the times. Really liked this series as well. Your passion for the music and the history oozes from these videos. Thank you!
Those Woe is me lyrics aren’t positive. They sound like your bro friend, spiteful after a breakup, who thinks he’s intelligent trying to sound like a motivational speaker.
You seem ten times more comfortable and structured with your script . I’ve watched about two dozen of your videos stemming from when you first started to now. Great character arc broski , peace and love 💙
If you're still here: Woe, Is Me is back with Michael Bohn, Hance Alligood, Andrew Paiano, Benjamin Ferris, Cory Ferris, Kevin Chanson and Matthew Whyde. Tyler Carter startet a new project called Emerald Royce.
Hance was the absolute MVP of the latter era Woe Is Me. Also, the American Dream EP was dope; Stand Up is a banger and the title track with the Danny Leal feature also rips. I think embracing traditional songwriting structure helped a lot. The two acoustic tracks are a bit generic and underbaked imo, but soulful nonetheless.
True, Hance really carried Genesi[S] and American dream, tho imo American dream is a bit underwhelming, yeah it's good but it's not something i expect from Woe Is Me, it's a bit generic and Doriano somehow sound way worse then he was on Genesis, the only thing that Made American Dream decent is Hance vocals that somehow reminds me to Kyle Pavone from WCAR (Rip) and the up-beat "follow your dreams" lyrics unlike Genesis
@@RVxCobra Doriano shines the most in the band Sirona. After Woe is Me, he put out an EP with Sirona, and that EP is a banger. Much more lyrical maturity and depth. No macho stuff and just relatable emotional hardships. Wish Sirona would've went on to put out more music, but they just did one EP and disappeared.
Seems like Tyler Carter should've stayed in WIM and had the "leader" make sure he didn't do dumb crap, because, well we all know what happened when he didn't have as short of a leash on...
Bohn and Kevin from Woe Is Me have a new band named The Villa which are fantastic if you haven’t checked them out. Bohn had another band briefly after his time with Issues ended but now he and Kevin are working together again
Please do Jamie's Elsewhere! They Said a Storm Was Coming was super influential in terms of later metalcore and the bands music had such an uplifiting vibe. I remember being so pissed when Aaron left, but I still enjoyed Rebel Revive. Now with his work in OM&M as well as Jamie's Elsewhere releasing a single with the OG members back, it'd be a great time to talk about them!
It would also be super cool to talk about the Rebel Revive cycle of the album, in which (if I remember correctly): the album was crowd funded, on the album release tour they learned that “one of the members decided to take full writer's credit for the latest album without the rest of the band's knowledge, and therefore received and kept 100% of the proceeds. Despite the rest of the band leaving” Justin Kyle finished out the tour still with the other artists on it which I respected a ton. So I thought it was very interesting that they decided to get back together
23:55 THANK YOU! You just summarized my feelings on most of 2010s deathcore. Also I never realized that Genesi[s] had no fully repeated parts (again, save for some hooks like "talk your shit, I'll give you a reason to"). I guess the otherwise stale and repetitive nature of the album completely negates the potential benefit of it, unlike on Number[s] where it was way more apparent. American Dream kinda goes the opposite direction, repeating choruses for more singalong factor, while dialing back a bit on the chuggy breakdowns.
PRMBA doesn’t go too in-depth and focuses more of the whys of things and doesn’t corner himself to just one genre. Cozy does, although this is what I love about his videos.
@@ReanuKeaves1 Yeah, Finn actually endorses Cozy, I think he said a few times before that anyone who enjoys his "Wikipedia" style videos about scene bands, and wishes he went more in-depth, should just subscribe to Cozy instead.
@@FairyCRat he literally joked about that, Finn was like “You think my videos are too much in depth you really should check out the Cozy Representative”!! Also some could argue since the Cozy Representative came first, Julian walked so Finn could run lol
I'll never understand why crown kicked out David, went butt rock, still had screams (which with no disrespect sound extra generic) but then drop 2 heavy ass songs with those same screams and still not have David. To me he was such an amazing and immediately recognizable vocalist. It's a shame that ego or money ruined something so great
@@relyksdjoser6429 They kicked him out because he wasn't contributing to the band. I agree he was the only one with talent, not that it mattered since they are like 60% back track.
Yup, as I have mentioned in the previous video, really sad how they blame it all to Austin, he was like a father to the band that needs to guide his kids because they are still young and might do unexpected things.
@@lifeordeath13 i find it ironic because i heard a lot of rumors back in the day of thorton doing a lot of coke and ive also seen him first hand belittling people including his girlfriend and calling them and her awful names in public. Wasn’t cool at all.
and look what we have in the end, no one of them became big, even golden voice Tyler Carter, wim probably had ambitions, but people didnt want to talk, solve inside problems, they just left the band ... and this is a big problem of many good bands imho, a lot of people dont appreciate, that they have
I think it really proves how the song Vengeance reflect to Tyler now, specifically the ego thing, poor Austin really need to go all through that shit, I think the part where Austin being pissed off with there live concerts because of the backtrack is acting so weird feels like it was stage, so that they will have reason aside from him being a control freak with the band to be kicked out.
Makes you appreciate bands who’ve stayed together, like Simple Plan. I see them like high school sweethearts who have stayed together since. Some people just know how to work well with others or solve problems together. Others can’t.
@@ReanuKeaves1 money can also play a big part. Craig mabbit said touring with blessthefall he was living in 5 bucks a day while his bandmates parents helped them out so there was some animosity there. Not alot of money in metal except for the very biggest bands
I remember watching an interview with Austin Thornton right after he got kicked out of Woe, Is Me and they asked him if he was planning on starting a new band and he said if he was, the band's name would be "I f*ck everything up"
Not that anyone wouldn't agree, but I think Austin Thornton's philosophy of running bands (the stereotypical "No Abusing Substances of Any Kind, No Bringing Anyone Over to the Studio" philosophy) feels more like him committing the Sin of Hubris of trying to keep the Woe, Is Me Mems from letting their egos get the best of them and devolving into the worst versions of themselves, only for the idea to collapse in on itself with Tyler Carter, Michael Bahn, and the Ferris brothers leaving to form Issues, Austin himself getting the boot, and the band breaking up, than it is him just being a dick and burning the band to the ground for the Hell of it. That's my Muse Theory, anyway.
Over the years Woe, is Me loses more and more things that made them unique in their genre. Not just Tyler. They lost their ambient lead guitarist first. After Tyler they lost Michael, then they lost their keyboardist. All those things for me made Woe, Is Me. I think if the Ferris brothers never left, they would have still made it. The song structures would have been pretty much the same. The style in the “We R Who We Are” cover could have been the sound that followed up into Genesis. Think That’s Outrageous’ first album on steroids. Would have been dope.
I love reliving all these old scene dramas with this channel. You're so right when you day it's like this just isn't a part of the culture anymore. Not like that's a bad thing but I remember when this situation was just the norm.
I have mixed feelings on American Dream, it's good but it's not something i expected/wanted from Woe, Is Me And im surprised Kevin Hanson lasted on the band that long, if i were him i wouldve just left after Genesi[S] lmao
For me, Genesi[s] still holds a place in my heart. Yeah the lyrics gets a bit repetitive but it works well for some reason, the breakdowns just hits your face, and this whole record as a whole is a 9.5 / 10. This album got me through high school. Every song gets to me a lot as an emotional roller coaster. Grateful for the record and still is a special album to me
@kylerknows I agree. I felt like the whole album was just one long breakdown. Was kind of disappointing as a big WIM fan back in the day. I understand sound obviously had changed or was gonna change but , I just felt like it got old after listening to it a couple times through.
I loved the SpinalTap parallel. It's like Woe is Me is an example of the Warped scene reaching critical mass and imploding on itself. A similar thing happened with Yes's album Tales From Topographic Oceans in '73. That album pushed the limit of prog rock so far that it was indiscernible if it was brilliant or a parody of prog itself.
Damn, that album is the closest thing we could ever get to Number[S] 2.0, but the clean vocals are kinda lacking imo, i guess that proves how big Tyler impact was on Number[S]
@@RVxCobra They actually have a Tyler Carter feature on the last track lol. And yeah, their singer at the time wasn't as strong as him, but overall I like the songs on that album a lot more than I ever liked Numbers
Cozy, my dude, this series is 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼! Would really like to see if you could find some information for a video on Let's Get It. They only had 1 full-length album and an EP, but I still listen to them today. The lead man, Jay, was a huge inspiration to me because he was one of the first POC frontmen I saw for bands in the Warped Tour scene.
At this point a whole groups of completely unknown musicians should just get together and tour as Woe is me, play the first 2 albums and then put something out😂
In my opinion, which everyone will disagree with lol, I actually like Genesi[s] over Number[s]. It's a lot heavier, catchier, better produced in terms of sound in my opinion, at least to my liking. I can see why a lot of people like Number[s] more and that's all cool, but Genesi[s] is just my taste musically. I guess I just like really mediocre metalcore like them and Capture the Crown and Make Me Famous then!
In the AP article Austin mentioned he thought the original plan was to replace him and Hance and bring Tyler back, only to end up resulting in the Ferris brothers and Michael then leaving. There must have been some label connection Austin had or some other detail that was never disclosed to have him be such a "root" for the band, wonder what it was that changed between 2011 and 2013. E: Always assumed he was the "electronic/ambient" element in their sound and seemed most likely if that was also his doing in Of Machines' sound
Story to tell is pure fire though just saying, but Its just like that early Memphis may fire era. But like when every member has changed the songs themes become redundant and silly
A letter to high school me: Be nice to your friend[s]. Family i[s] everything. Know your number[s]. Get good grade[s]. Stay in [S]chool. Tell them once, don't [S]ay it twice. Don't do drug[s].
Are there no editors in written media anymore? I spotted several typos in that AP article and I feel like I see typos in articles all the damn time these days. It’s really unprofessional to publish an interview or a news story riddled with misspellings and mistaken auto-corrects.
American Dream was way better than Genesis because the latter doesn't have anything memorable. I feel like Woe Is Me breaking up was very promptly but the thing is the band dealt with lots of issues in such short span.
They’re in the same position as woe is me was. They nothing without Tyler, yes they can get a new vocalist but it just won’t be the same, it’s gonna feel completely different Eventually they will break up like Woe is me
@@kingchuckfinley bro he was stuck in bed for like 9 months, lost his hair, couldn’t even sing and they kicked him out because he was “lazy and not willing to commit to the band.” What are you asking me about
I don't know about everyone else, but for me - Genesi[s] had to be the best album to come out by Woe, Is Me. I'm not saying that I didn't miss Michael's vocal (I REALLY did miss him), and I'm not saying that I did miss (I REALLY didn't... I prefer Hance's vocal), but the lyrics from that album really helped me through my teenage years. Because when you grow up with parental figures telling you are worthless, or useless, or hopeless, or anything negative for that matter; having an album written with the narrative of 'fuck your opinions, and your preconceptions about me - I WILL prove you wrong, and I WILL amount to something great through other means that I hope you find. What I mean to say, is that even though it was quite explicit, and for a lack of a better term (no pun intended), Genesi[s] was the stepping teenage me needed to find Jesus. So Genesi[s] will have a special place in my heart. Number[s] was a fantastic album and definitely still has a place in my playlists. And American Dream was an awesome album to hear as part of their journey of the band's 'sound', it carries on with the same sound as Genesi[s].
I knew nothing about the beef. I came into Woe, Is Me with Genesis and I love it. No song skip album. Now knowing about the beef, changes nothing for me.
Weird addendum to this was Hance formed a band called Favorite Weapon and I recall that they hijacked all of the Woe, Is Me social media and used that as their official pages.
The only album I know about them is Genesis, and I love it A story to tell, Nothing left to lose, family first are songs that helps me through. Without knowing what that song is actually about because I found the album in 2017 and know nothing about the dramas.
I luv ur vids so much :D U shud talk about Hawthorne Heights or Senses Fail (been listening 2 them a lot recently, not tripping if you don't tho) Keep up the good work! I love learning about all these different bands dude and U obviously put a ton of effort into making these so thank u :)
Loving these videos! Wasn't a huge Woe fan at the time but I faintly remembered all the drama that went on. I personally would love to see a video about In Fear and Faith. That was a band that should've been way bigger than they were. Incredibly talented musicians but just a revolving door of members and unidentified problems definitely plagued them. Not to mention, their last show was them opening for Saosin with Anthony Green. Pretty poetic ending given the name of the band.
If there was a modern day Spinal Tap, Woe Is Me would probably be a main influence with maybe an interview about how there were 75 line up changes within 2 years. 😂
Alright man, I love you. I love your videos and I love hearing your take. But I gotta disagree on Genesi[s]. It's probably the nostalgia talking because i was a too-cool-for-school 17 year old that was on team Woe, but I still find a lot to enjoy from that album. Like, I have great memories of me and my friends driving my crappy Honda Civic and singing along to Story to Tell, screaming and headbanging to Walking Dead and getting legendary levels of hype to the Caleb Shomo feature since Attack Attack! were like top tier at the time. Yeah, all your criticisisms are completely valid and I've got some rose-colored glasses on, but I have a lot of fun with that album and thinking back to when I first heard it.
@The Cozy Representative YOU NEED TO DO A VIDEO ON AMYCANFLYY THEY MADE THOSE SONGS CALLED DINOSAURS GO RAWR AND LETTING GO OF THE MONSTER BUT THEN THEY DISAPPEARED
Yeah, i’ll be honest, I remember it taking a few listens to get into, but once it caught me, I couldn’t stop listening to it and I still love to sling it on to this day. Such a heavy ride from start to finish and a nice 30 minutes easy listen, super catchy parts, love it
Such a sick channel man! so glad i found it, as a 30 year old emo kid at heart from Australia lot's of the details of these stories went over my head over here while we were all obsessing over I killed the prom queen and parkway drive in high school so its cool to here such in depth recounts... Takes me back!
I could be totally wrong, but I remember part of Hance leaving also had to do with him “being in love” with his new girlfriend, who was like 17 at the time. I remember it blowing up on Facebook with a picture of him at her high school graduation, and the girl’s mom defending hance. That was a wild time. 😂
When you compare the Genesis era Woe, is Me to literally any of Issues’ material, it just couldn’t be clearer which group had the best songwriting chops and the better musicians. In my opinion, Issues really had something special, musically speaking. Between Tyler’s very unique and killer voice, Michael’s solid screaming capability and the musicianship and musical vision of Rebollo and the Acord brothers, Issues wrote one banger after another. It’s a damn shame that it all came crumbling down because that combination of guys really could’ve gone far. I still regularly listen to all of their stuff. They had a sound that was entirely unique to them and it was impossible to hear an Issues song and not know immediately whose song it was. It wasn’t just because of Tyler’s voice, either. AJ’s characteristic guitar riffs and the precision of his playing was a key factor in their overall sound.
“I want to create music until the day that I die. I just want to be involved in a musical project that makes me completely 100% happy.” Has any musician in human history ever been “involved in a musical project that made them completely 100% happy”? Musicians don’t tend to be the happiest of people. Even after a few years of living his dream, Hance still didn’t realize that being completely 100% happy as a touring musician is not possible.
I met them during Warped 2013 and the whole vibe was so different. I talked to them about how much Genesis kinda sat with me and everything. I was so sad they broke up a few months later
Fuck yes, I literally said to my partner "I wanna watch some emo history" and went to my feed and saw this posted 40 minutes ago. Thank you so much for blasting me back to my childhood and keeping me entertained. I watched all your Asking Alexandria videos and I literally never listened to them before lol. You're a good story teller and seem really genuine. Excited to see your channel grow (: Can't wait for part 4 , I actually used to listen to issues when i was like 13 lol
I hope you get to do a video on A Skylit Drive. Been wanting to hear your thoughts on the OG lineup reuniting and Jag pushing forward with the band as of recently
I’m sure hance is a great dude but his vocals just didn’t fit well with woe I didn’t like any of the songs that were ever made after the departure of Tyler. Genesis sucks. It’s just a whole break down chopped up into 10 songs nothing catchy about it American dream also sucked none of the songs from both those albums Triumph, any of the songs on Numbers. I think the only two songs that are good in the Hance era are vengeance, and that Kesha cover..
Suffering from mental illness I'm able to heavily relate with the positive messages throughout Genesis as well as when experiencing conflict with others. Austin wrote lots of the lyrics for Numbets as well hence the "you're so proud of the one liners you wrote" line which alludes to Tyler Carter's "never lose your flames" in Desolate The Conductor that he was so incredibly proud & fond of so it's not like Austin didn't start writing lyrics until Genesis for the band by any means. Genesis still gets me pumped tf up & is great for exercising.
Genesis is one of my favorite albums of all time ha I definitely think it's much better than numbers. Also woe recently just got back together and are writing again.
I love that in the interview he says something about how Genesis still has the Woe, Is Me sound to it... Dawg, that album sounds like a dime a dozen verb the noun band that was copied and pasted 500 times the year that album released. That's why it's dogshit
