My mom worked as an account manager on Wall Street in the late 80s when she was in her 20s and has some pretty crazy stories that aren’t far off from some events in this movie. I remember one story where my mom said nobody could find her boss for like 3 days and she was sent to his penthouse to see what was going on. When she got there she found him completely strung out on blow and also found a Chanel purse in his fridge when she was getting water to sober him up. My mom has a lot more stories like that. She’s still an account manager for a different company and doesn’t work on Wall Street anymore, but she says that all the crazy parties and shenanigans were still going on into the early 2000s.

I graduated high school in '85. The 80's were pretty wild and chaotic. It has been called the decade of decadence due to the selfishness and rampant narcissism. Bright Lights, Big City and Wall Street are two more good examples of what was going on back then. Wild times!

Maybe compared to the book, but overall HE told his own story, and if you trust Jordan Belfort to be an honest man about himself after seeing this, you're dumber than the poeple he scammed as they at least didn't know him. Several former employees of his company said that although Jordan really held these daily inspirational speeches, he was often wasted and not nearly the charismatic leader that is being portraied in the movie - also no newspaper gave him the name Wolf of Wallstreet, he himself did. It's an entertaining story and movie but never trust a conman.

I saw a clip of Belfort after the film was made where he explained the "pen question". The answer isn't to "sell the pen", it's to ask the customer questions like "what kind of pen do you use now?" or "do you have a favorite color of pen?". Part of is figuring out if they really do want to buy, because why waste your time if they aren't serious, and the rest is getting the exact idea of what the person wants so you can tailor your product and pitch.

That was a real goldfish Jonah Hill put in his mouth. There were animal handlers present, and per guidlines he could only have it in his mouth for no more than 3 seconds, and obviously not swallow it. (I know Shanelle reads it in the IMDB trivia in the end, but just for anyone who doesn't get to watch that part.)

Great reaction Shanelle, like always. This movie stands as a testament to the storytelling power of cinema when it intersects with real-life events. Its basis in truth allows the audience to not only witness the extremes of human behavior but also to reflect on the broader implications and lessons that extend beyond the screen. And there are some fun facts about this movie, Jordan Belfort was inspired by Tommy Chong to write the book, of all the people to thank for the existence of The Wolf of Wall Street, actor and stoner icon Tommy Chong is the guy who ultimately made it happen. Chong served a jail sentence in the same Californian prison as Jordan Belfort and the two were cellmates. And according to Business Insider, Belfort told Chong stories from his career on Wall Street during their jail stay together and Chong encouraged him to collect those stories into a memoir- which became the basis for the movie. Before Martin Scorsese became interested in the project, in a interview a producer reported that Ridley Scott was interested in directing an adaptation of The Wolf of Wall Street with Brad Pitt playing Jordan Belfort. Leonardo DiCaprio had been desperate to play Jordan Belfort since reading his book, Jonah Hill took a pay cut for the opportunity to work with Martin Scorsese, On an episode of The Howard Stern Show, Jonah Hill says that he was so desperate to work with favorite director Martin Scorsece, also saying Goodfellas is his favorite movie and that he was willing to take a pay cut for the opportunity to work with him. One of the most iconic scenes in this movie sees Matthew McConaughey’s character thumping his chest and humming, which wasn't in the script. In fact, it’s McConaughey’s own scene preparation ritual and he does it before every take. And according to McConaughey, Leonardo DiCaprio suggested including it in the movie and Scorsese decided to throw it in. Since this was just the second week of filming, DiCaprio claims it set the tone for the rest of the shoot. Whenever one of the characters in the movie snorts cocaine- which is almost as frequent an occurrence in the movie as someone dropping an f-bomb, the actors are actually snorting crushed-up B vitamins, Jonah Hill revealed that he contracted bronchitis from inhaling so much and had to be hospitalized. Most of the dialogues in the movie was improvised, the scene in which Jordan tries to get home from the country club as the Quaaludes set in was entirely improvised on the day. It was DiCaprio’s idea for Jordan to open the car door with his foot, though that had to be the only take, since he sprained his foot doing it. And in that scene where a female employee of his firm has her head shaved in front of hundreds of men hooting like animals so she might get $10,000 for a boob job. I watched that scene thinking, "They didn't fake this. This woman was absolutely shaved." And i later found out that her name is Natasha Newman Thomas. She's a Los Angeles-based stylist, and this beautiful women gave up her locks solely for the cinema. Keep up the good work.

I worked IT for a private investment firm for about 12 years 2008-2020. It was a small company of about 40 employees when I joined, and was about 220 employees when I left. They had a trade desk of about 20 people. Yes the trade desk can get extremely loud with salty language during busy or frantic days. Many of my fellow workers were traders during the time frame of this movie - and told me the trade desk scene was pretty accurate, but the debauchery scenes were much less over the top at their own firms (at least that is what they said).

Love your insights as usual! Wolf of Wall Street is a perfect example of why you need a director like Scorsese for projects like this. Anyone else would have kept reminding the audience that Belfort is a bad guy. Scorsese trusts the audience to figure that out and just wallows in the depravity. The people who miss the point and idolize the bad guy will do that no matter what, just like with Fight Club.

Yes! You pay someone to transport it. A yacht that size would definitely require a full time crew anyways, and they're already getting paid, so they'd do whatever the owner wants within reason. Smaller boats, you could hire someone to deliver the boat to wherever you want to. Happens all the time, and that's how some people make a living. In some circumstances, they could even put your boat on a much larger cargo ship, which is expensive and slower, but sometimes makes more sense for whatever logistical reasons.
