How the fuck did no one like this movie? It's pretty accurate to the Patch comics and it's just brutal Wolverine action. It seems like people are confusing this movie with the Wolverine Origins movie
Bryan Colbert Well I think the ending was quite poor and the viper villain kinda ruins the tone of the movie throughout but I agree. This does not deserve to have the same rating at origins. It's much much better.
I give Hugh Jackman props, and I think the was the best film in which he played Wolverine, and James Mangold had several great films that I loved (Copland, Walk the Line, Identity) but that being said, this film was GOOD, but not GREAT. I still think the first 2 X-men films are the best. If you really want to see Hugh Jackman rock his shit, see "Prisoners".
Honestly the battle between Logan and Shingen should have been the climax. Best fight scene in the movie and one of the best I've seen in a comic book movie.
Justin Joshua Sabillo Ya that was close enough to the climax though. The Wolverine was a proper Wolverine solo movie though. That fight was great though
My flaws for The Wolverine are nitpicks. My 5 reasons why I liked it so much: 1. I wanted a close but not exact adaptation of the comic issue when Logan was in Japan. I love the old and pop Japanese culture. It exceeded my expectations. 2. Logan was mostly invulnerable in all of movies. This movie tested how far and deep can he go when his main mutant power was taken away. 3. Mariko was strong on her own right. And she got exposed at the same time. Yuriko looks like she was an anime character far from the comics, but played her part with Logan so well. 4. The twist near a the end gasped me. I did not see that coming. 5. The post-credit scene blew my mind. I got me clapping and excited to see the movie adaptation of DOFP.
I agree with everything except number 4. That twist was both very obvious and was a clear attempt to get a more menacing villain in the movie to accompany the already shitty Viper.
Sorry man, but that hair at the beginning. You looked less than Wolverine and more like Ace Ventura when he runs around in a skirt. XD But that improves the scene actually. So good for you :)
I don't get why the guy Wolverine saves in the beginning turns on him in the end. He is genuinely grateful, offering his sword. So why go nuts at the end?
I like it but it doesnt make sense. Like how does wolverine remember that dude if his memory was erased when he got the claws. And silver samurai got wolverines healing power, so how do they kill him with the claws?
One compaint i have (its very minor) is that when he wasnt healing right and he used his claws there wasnt any type of scarring or anything like that they looke
Hey chris, I just got back from the Wolverine and at the end where his claws get cut off I was wondering how do you think he will get his Claws back? I know he grew his bone claws but how do you think he will get his adamantium claws back? Or do you think he even will get them back? I didn't watch the scene after the credits so if that explains it then you know why I don't know aha.
At 3:24 to answer that. The sword did not cut completely through him only through him but through a corner of him. I believer it was only the left side of his hip but not the spine.
A lot of those Japanese scenes were actually filmed here in Australia. They had put in the major newspaper that they were filming it in Sydney at the time and that people could come down and watch, I almost made the drive down to check it out (Sydney is about 2 hours away from me) Really wish I had.
Old review, i know, but I agree with Ralinor666. (except that last point....) The directing was great, awesome, and the director's work is worth following. Love interest should stay away from Comic action movies. The story/plot/reason we came to the movies was clumsily, see through and full of holes. The actors did what they could, and a damn good job of it. But geeez... honor these great stars with at least a good script. My goodness... Hire some real writers to make it solid.... the actors will do their jobs beautifully, just damn.... give them something to work with.
i like to think the silver samurai sword is altimanium found thison wikipedia In the 2013 film The Wolverine, the Silver Samurai's armor is built out of adamantium. The film depicts more decisive example of adamantium being damaged is shown as the two katanas wielded by the Samurai, also constructed of adamantium, are able to slice through Wolverine's claws
What I Didn´t like is Wolverine not getting his Adamantium claws at the end, i mean if he regenerates why he didn´t get his claws again. And Did anyone saw the guy with the Spiderman Baseball Cap during the scene in the alley with Viper and The Archer?
Can someone explain how that little robot implant thingy could "suppress" Wolverine's healing abilities? Isn't that his mutation; supposed to be genetic isn't it? A little heartcrawler shouldn't have that much effect I would think.
watch it again he never actually puts it back into that position. and seconds before she put it down the second time there were no chop sticks in the up right position. It was obviously a clip hat was either supposed to be placed at the beginning of that scene or at the end and they forgot to cut it out. That was an editing error.
can someone please explain to me the Family Feud or Conflict in the movie because there is a 4year old behind me i didn't hear the reasons and all that
i watched the fight scene between the wolverine and Shingen very closely and shingen didn't slice through wolverine's spine but he sliced only the right side of his waist.
Well in Days of Future Past he will have bone claws in present time but when he is sent back in time into his younger self's body, he will have his adamantium claws. I don't know if he'll ever get the metal claws in the again in the present though :(
The strike doesn't go thorough the spine merely cuts the lower half of the torso and the movement through is actually along the belly to clear the sword from the abdominal cavity, so no it didn't go through the spine. I know because my hobby is Kendo. Don't get my started on the flips during Shingen's sparring match...
I agree with this explanation. Since we didn't have Harada generating his mutant tachyon field around the Black Blade, a super-heated adamantium sword cutting through other adamantium makes sense.
that is true. However, you have to consider the imagery that cutting off his claws provided. Also, it will be a unique hurdle for him to overcome later on. i think they did it to ground Wolverine a bit more. Otherwise you'd have a unstoppable, unkillable guy whom, can just tear through armies of enemies without thought.
I think the scene people are talking about is the Shingen vs Logan fight...and Shingen slices Logan across the stomach. you don't actually see the cut go through Logan's body. this is however a fatal blow, since your stomach would be sliced open and your guts is on the floor, but Logan can superheal. I am basing this on the Japanese sword is not a hacking weapon, as a longsword, but a slicing weapon and if your opponents stomach is cut open you don't have to cut his spine...the dude will die
The way I figure it was that his sword was Adamantium and was super charged because of the samurais ability thus giving his sword the ability to cut through it.
whenever there is any Japanese action drama kind of stuff involved in any movie, Hiroyuki Sanada is the guy i always look forward to. i haven't watched much of his work but he always seems to be perfect for the roles !
I'm surprised to hear how much you liked this movie. I think it had a great set up in the beginning with Japan in WW2, but I think the plot fell apart as the movie progressed. I did not think the female viper villain belonged and the twist with his friend being the silver samurai made me feel like my intelligence was being insulted. I will give this another chance thanks to your review. Jackman was amazing as always (He's so good I don't think anyone else can play Wolverine right now). The Wolverine movies have failed to capture the guilt, shame, remorse, and regret that Wolverine carries around with him. I really wish someone like Scorsese could direct Wolverine so we can get a more intimate character study. He's that type of character, in my opinion, more so than Spiderman, Batman, and many other superheroes. He's also a very romantic character, which I think they scratched the surface with, but have not gone all the way.
The Silver Semurai in the movie was entirely made up of Adamantium as Yukio or Viper I think said they have been gathering adamantium materials everywhere. So that adamantium semurai word and added with super heat..and you know how metal react with heat eventho adamantium isnt ur typicalmetal but I hope you get it Chris:O
When wolverine saves yoshida at the start of the movie he had bone claws so that means that event happened before x men origins wolverine so if wolverine lost his memory after that then how was he able to remember that he saved a guy and when he was with mariko how does he remember the well?
I think this was the apology for how bad origins was. As such, I think they are just acting like origins never happened, which is probably for the better.
i really enjoyed this movie and i agree with your assessments. However, i don't think the samurai sword went through Logan. to me it looked more like he held it as if he had hit something hard on the way through and 'cut around' it. if that makes sense. in any case i really enjoyed it and will pick it up once it's on blu ray.
Chris I was wondering if you could break out your review grades... Like a grade for: director, acting, sound track, etc. and then add those up for a final grade... Just like GameTrailers used to do for video games. Nice Wolverine Review
Well, I'm considerating to put this movie somewhere in my personal Top 11 favorites of the year, but there are other titles I have yet to watch, "Kick-Ass 2", "The World's End", "The Hobbit Episode II-Desolation of the Smaug", "Rush", "The Zero Theorem" so... We'll see about that.
I agree with Sam about the stuntwork because the action scenes were great, although I heard that Jackman got injured doing a stunt that really worried his wife, so I guess some stunts are better left to the professionals
He seemed like an Iron Man villain because he was wearing a giant suit like Iron Monger did in Iron Man (2008). He just stands around and uses the suit...kind of like Iron Monger...but he was a bad villain while Iron Monger was at least decent. I agree with you about Wolverine...they really understood how to handle his character this time around.
The only real problems I had was that it was really obvious footage was cut out because it was "too violent" and the last 20 minutes really ruined it. I would've rather just had a really well choreographed fight shot wide rather than a cheesy fight with a giant robot samurai. Viper was pretty worthless too.
The Shingen v. Wolvie sword fight didnt have Shingen cut him in half. In Japanese sword fights you dont cut the other guy in half. Merely opening up the side of a guy is more than fight ending (for a human).
I thought it was lazy of them at the end when Wolverine grew his claw back, as well as how his power was being stolen with screws? How come Wolverine didn't even grow a little bit of his claws until he needed them to stab with? And they should have explained how those screws were stealing his powers and how they were given back...
Actually the robot didn't suppress his healing completely. In a few shots if you look, they show that he is healing a little but not healing completely. Also none of the normal swords when through his adamantium they just cut his skin.
