I really appreciate you commenting on taking the way women are portrayed in Victorian times with a grain of salt as it comes with the territory. I keep seeing how modern readers can't stand classics because of how women are portrayed. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't devalue an amazing novel like that. Anyway, loved your review!
Great discussion of the book! I think Marian is one of the strongest and well developed female characters in Victorian Literature. I also both loved & hated Count Foscoe when I was reading the book.

I love The Woman in White! Count Fosco is such a great character - one of the best villains for sure. Great discussion. I really liked the theme of the perceived powerlessness of women coupled with the strength Marian and even Anne at times.
It lived up to all my expectations! Fosco is the best villain I have ever read in fiction. What a complex character! The struggles of women was very present in the whole book. It seemed to be a display of how much power men hold over women. I loved that the women of this book fought back against societal expectations.
@@naomisbookshelf Yes, definitely. Women were in such a precarious position - it was very easy to lose their reputations, they didn't have access to their own money. I loved how Marion showed such courage and strength despite these things.
