Fun fact: women are REALLY good at extreme endurance sports! It is not uncommon for women to win in mixed competitions for events like 4000km cycling races, or 410km marathons, and they often hold world records too. At events like that it all comes down to general health, efficiency and mental toughness: all the advantages men have in traditional sports are no longer relevant.
@Pippis78
@Pippis78 Год назад
I think I've heard women even have advantage in endurance sports. And it seems small size is advantageous too for some reason (just guessing because marathoners are often small and relatively short people). Women do have a higher pain tolerance too, but I think those sports go so far beyond suffering that all the professionals just go over some line and don't feel anything 😬

Interesting. AFAIK, the only ultra-distance* runners I know personally are all women. ( * Beyond marathon distance, with one friend who has run over 100k over a weekend for fun.)

I heard about the pentathlon that an incident at the last Olympics caused the change. Apparently you do not ride your own horse during pentathlon but some randomly alloted one - and there was quite some mistreatment going on when an athlete wasn't happy with what they considered their horse's lack of performance.
@alistairwall5470
@alistairwall5470 11 месяцев назад
The riding of a randomly allotted horse comes from that the Modern Pentathlon was a way to get the five major disciplines a ~1900 soldier would have to be good in. "Modern" meaning not Ancient, since there was a Pentathlon in the Greek Olympics.
@88porpoise
@88porpoise 9 месяцев назад
@@alistairwall5470More specifically, it was an officer escaping from behind enemy lines. And the unfamiliar horse was one you stole, presumably from one of the enemies you shot and/or stabbed.

I think the hardest part would actually be not loosing a shoe. But maybe they're allowed to strap them on. Kinda scary on the ancles. Running on toes is the natural way to run actually.
@alexanderkupke920

since they got on to horses, they do nothing else. We still land on our heels, so while it's not hard to run on just your toes I expect it shortens your stride and that is slower.

Riding BD Robots is an interesting solution. On the one hand, it instantly solves your evenness problem. They're all identically manufactured robots, and their differences should be negligible, especially when compared to biological horses. On the other hand, it only makes the problem of affordability worse. (At least I think it does... How much would a BD horse cost?)
@nelsondawson9706
@nelsondawson9706 Год назад

@snuffysam
@snuffysam 8 месяцев назад
Sending the robots to the host country also seems easier than sending the horses there. Some countries (e.g. Australia iirc) have laws about what animals can be imported in, a robot is less likely to escape and ruin local wildlife populations.

Can't believe Tom said he thinks there's plenty of room for improvement on the 13.5 seconds. The normal 100m womens olympic world records in proper running shoes by people who have been training for it daily for a decade "only" do it in 10.5 seconds, so they're not slowing down anywhere near as much as youd expect by being in heels. They're still full out going sprinting speeds. She probably beats the world record normal 100m times from just a few decades ago, but in high heels!! Maybe the heels aren't as big as im imagining and they're modified so they look like trainers because 13.5 seconds in heels is insanely quick
@rob-c.
