Lyrics:
Clear the Apartment. I plan on collapsing and I could have sworn I heard a car door slam.
I'm stuck at the corner of grinding teeth and stomach acid, all alone under a soft rain and
streetlamp. I spent my life weighed down by a stone heart, drowning in irony and settling
for anything. Somewhere down the line all the wiring went faulty. I'm scared shitless of
failure and I'm staring out at where I wanna be. I just want to sell out my funeral. I just
want to be enough for everyone. I just want to sell out my funeral. Know that I fought
until the lights were gone. I'm walking through harbors and churchyards. I felt the snow
crack under my feet. I'll stay thankful for mild winters, for every shot I got at anything.
I'll blame the way that I was brought up or the flaws that I was born with or the mistakes
that I've made. They're all just fucking excuses. Bury me in the memories of my friends
and family. I just need to know that they were proud of me. Oh, we all wanna know.
Where'd the American dream go? Did you give up and go home? Am I here alone? Oh,
when the credits roll, I'll watch as the screen glows; the moments when I choked, all the
fears that I've outgrown-at least I hope so. I was just happy to be a contender. I was
just aching for anything. And I used to have such steady hands but now I can't keep them
from shaking. I'm sorry I... I'm sorry I don't laugh at the right times. Is this what it
feels like with my wings clipped? I'm awkward and nervous. I'm awkward and nervous
but I was kind of hoping you'd stay. I need you to stay. Oh, god, could you stay? I need
you to stay. I need you to stay. I need you. If I'm in an airport and you're in a hospital
bed, then, what kind of man does that make me? What kind of man does that make me?
I know how it feels to be at war with a world that never loved me. All we had were hand me-downs. All we had was good will. Two blackbirds on a highway sign are laughing at me here with my wings clipped. I'm staring up at the sky but the bombs keep fucking falling. There's no devil on my shoulder; he's got a rocking chair on my front porch but I won't let him in. No, I won't let him in. 'Cause I'm sick of seeing ghosts and I know how it's all gonna end. There's no triumph waiting. There's no sunset to ride off in. We all want to be great men and there's nothing romantic about it. I just want to know that I did all I could with what I was given.

It's incredible. I just saw TWY in concert and they played this album in order for the 10th anniversary. This song caps the album perfectly. It pulls together all the previous songs without being repetitive and then absolutely hits a climax at the end. Such a great concept and ending.

@@nicholasmaillet5619 you're gonna love it. If they do the same set, it's the album, then a 5 minute intermission and a shorter set of other songs. Funeral was an incredible closer before the intermission. It all builds to that ending and blows you away. Enjoy yourself!

It's more than just putting the "most important" lyrics together in the song, though. It's suggesting a model for finding meaning in life. The disparate moments of resolve and clarity within the struggles detailed in prior songs congeal into something forceful and true. The lyrics aren't the only things true and meaningful, the structure is as well, lending subtexts and association to every line. That's why this album is so incredible.

In Devil In My Bloodstream they mention "we wiped out all the buffalo" and a lot of people don't know bison were super common in WV until, ya know, we wiped them out lol. Agreed though. @@KitsuneJager You've got a hell of a music taste my friend. Being from Kentucky (Former Ohio native), I 100% know what you're talking about with WV's buffalo! Too relatable with those lyrics haha. Brand New is a personal favorite of mine, TWY and BN and even NFG shook up the Pop Punk scene at the time, and are genre definers in my personal opinion. Also, "I bet I'd be a fucking coward, I'd bet I'd never have the guts for war" hits so hard, because my family has a military background even going back to WW1. They hit that niche while being something for everyone.
@KitsuneJager

@@reidsilver9466 I really appreciate that! I saw Brand New 3 times live and each one will always be a valued memory. Science Fiction is my favorite album of all time. Didn't initially hit me that hard but over time (and a divorce) goddamn that album is guaranteed emotions. oh man I struggle to sing that line every time without getting a little choked up. Dad was army, grandfather was air force, but I just never had the desire for it. Not because I'm a "tough guy" or anything like that but I'm very much a fuck dying for nothing I'd rather build a compound for my family and friends deep off the grid and only be involved with society when I absolutely have to. The final lines of this song really hit me hard. At first I thought they seemed very pessimistic, but after listening to this album over and over I realize how real those lines are. Yes, we all aspire to be great people and do great things, but it doesn't come without work, pain, and tears. It takes sacrifice and great will to do those great things, but in the end as long as we do all that we can with what we are given in our own circumstances we can be truly happy with our lives.

I gave this album four listens today. The first two before I went to work, the third on the ride home from work, and the fourth as I was laying in bed, in the silence of my room with the lights off. This song stuck a chord in me and I was crying like a baby when it was over. It's such a powerful album, and this song is such a grand finale to The Upsides trilogy. Thank you, TWY. You guys mean more to me than you'll ever know.

fucking hell man, i listened through this album all the way for the first time today on a road trip and this song felt transcendent; it's the perfect musical montage and it so neatly ties the whole album together. i had chills through the whole second half, and i didn't even know it was coming. what a treat

Ever since the upsides, The Wonder Years got me through a difficult junior &senior years of highschool now with this upcoming album they just give me goosebumps & new found confidence. I never thought I would fight my sea of depression but because of them, I can laugh again and put up with the worlds bullshit. I'm not sad anymore. Thanks TWY. For everything.

It really is. The day I drove home after dropping out of college I listened to the trilogy of albums (Upsides, Suburbia, and Greatest Generation), and this song really does an amazing job of wrapping up that journey.

I remember you guys playing this at the end of your concert in 2012 and I remember I bought tickets that night and went. I bawled and sung with my arm up and you held my hand and I was given the guitar pick. Thank you guys for helping us be in touch with the emotions we don't know how express properly. We all love you so fucking much.
