The town of Aalsmeer was and still is the flowers capital of the Netherlands. It is the place where large numbers of growers sell their beautiful produce for distribution all over the world.
The nearby Schiphol airport is very convenient to ship flowers, plants and bulbs, keeping them as fresh as can be.
As you will see in this film, Alsmeer is a major hub in this very tradional Dutch trade sector, especially in view of the many auction houses that link sellers and buyers.
The trade is done on the basis of Dutch auctions whereby a large clock shows a rapidly decreasing purchase price for the goods at hand. The buyer who first stops the clock by pressing his or her button gets the goods at the indicated price on the clock.
This film has been restored, enhanced and colorized by means of modern video software based on Artificial Intelligence, A.I.

Bijzonder. Vrachtwagens, vliegtuigen, internationale handel, huizen en fabriekenshallen die nu niet uit de toon zouden vallen. 100 jaar oud, maar helemaal herkenbaar.

I wasn't sure if this would be my cup of tea to watch but it was really interesting! Even in the 1930s the processes look quite sophisticated and slick, especially on the auction house. I wonder how much has changed from then compared to today. What was the dredging for at 10:00? Are they spreading the silt back onto allotments and farms? Never seen that before. Great music accompanying the film, as always.

Interesting question, dredged material was sometimes used as soil improver ..

Its essential fertiliser / mulch its incredibly high in nutrients. Now obviously you use chemicals which cause run off and then marine problems etc etc

Thank you Rick. I was born in Aalsmeer and used to live there until my twenties. In some parts regularly dredging is necessary to keep the land above the water table. The peatlands erode and settle in easily. The gardeners dredge the silt called 'meermolm' in the surrounding lakes and transport it to their plots of land. They mainly grow there shrubs such as lilacs. And ofcourse the silt is very fertile.

The same auction system for flowers also operates in Australia too and has for decades. Kudos for your work and time. It's appreciated by all of us here! Know that! Seeing as you're Dutch, you may know of a Dutch film from the early 1930s I've been chasing for years. I think It's called 'The Ghost Train'. It's based on a British film of the same name. So far I can only find fragments of it. Once again, Kudos to you Rick for your time and dedication in preserving early cinema.

Very good video. At 9:30 to 10:30 boatman appear to be digging up mud and loading it into what appear boats specially made for the purpose. What is that about?

It might be an early form of dredging? Considering the importance of water transport it would not surprise me that they are making sure the water is deep enough for travel/transport by boat. Greetings from the Netherlands (And no I am not sure this is the right answer!)
