Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Cava de 'Tirreni (SA)
The founder of the abbey of the Santissima Trinità de 'La Cava was Sant'Alferio Pappacarbone, a noble from Salerno of Lombard origin who trained in Cluny, who in 1011 retired under the large Arsicia cave at the foot of Mount Finestra in the current territory of the City of Cava. de 'Tirreni, to spend a hermit's life there.
However, the foundation of the monastic nucleus dates back to 988, because Alferio was not the first inhabitant of the cave. In the Arsicia cave as early as 988, the monk of Montecassino Liuzio, also known as Leone da Ostia, on his return from a pilgrimage to Palestine, had stayed there for some time.
In 1025, Alferio had recently finished the church, when Prince Guaimario III of Salerno and his son Guaimario IV with a diploma donated to the new community the wooded area and the cultivated lands all around the Arsicia cave between the Selano river and its two streams. tributaries Sassovivo and Giungolo. With the same diploma the monastic community was conferred, among other privileges, the exemption from taxes and the free designation of abbots by the predecessor or, by election, by the community itself.
