I couldn't keep away from Damascus - visited it four times between 2000 and 2011 and I long to return... But beautiful as the city is, the people are even more beautiful. So many memories - of people walking miles with me just because I asked for a simple direction, of young soldiers standing patiently in line behind old women at the falafel stand, of Mount Qassaioun with its market and the tomb of Spain's most famous medieval Muslim sheikh - Ibn Arabi, of 'the Poet's House' - a restaurant in the heart of the old city where 10 of us dined like kings for a few dollars each, and last but not least the Jewish Quarter, with its houses falling into ruin because, as our Christian guide told us, the government will not allow the houses to be appropriated 'because one day their owners might come back'.
