The nice weather is at our doors and it's time to start the BBQ and eat outdoors on the patio. In this episode, I'm making a cedar patio table for a friend and maybe you'll get inspired to make your own.
This plan and many others are available on my website thewoodpecker.net

Dear Alain, A very nicely made outdoor table. I think the heavy duty subframe adds to it's charm & as your rightly pointed out, won't be falling out soon. No matter how hungry your client is or his/her friends are, they can rest assured that a ton of food won't make it collapse because of weak structure. Very well done. Kind regards.

I like the thing that looks like a carrot peeler you used to round over the corners.

It's a nice tool, but it's a pain to use when the grain is changing direction. Peeling in the grain can quickly become a disaster....

Maybe one day you will... I have another couple from France who will help me at the cottage in September. Maybe one year it will be you? But I know you like to travel and Canada is super big, I don't travel a lot in my own country...

This can be done, It's like an infinite endless work place over there. But you have to be very brave, hares are all over the place at night LOL but like I say to every French person who come to visit my shop; why in the hell are you thinking coming here to visit! They're no castle here.

A very nice table. And I agree better to be safe than sorry with the brass screws. I have shouted many a swear word when the screws have snapped off

Yes these screws last a life time but screwing them is a pain they break easily when they're screwed in.

Put some varnish under the base (the very down bottom feet of the base) and place the table on the grass.

The nice thing about cedar is that it lasts pretty good outdoors. The bad thing about cedar is it's annoying tendency to warp at the worst times. I hope you got some seasoned cedar. The design is popular with a lot of people, not my style as I prefer the much more complicated hex/round ones myself. I may have to build a custom outdoor table soon...the people who are dissatisfied with what is available want one with butterfly flip up extensions. Still it looks very nice and "Canadian" stable *^_^*. Ever notice that us Canadians tend to build things to hold a virtual ton of weight?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 5 лет назад
Cedar is great, but it cost a fortune, but like you said Canadian like to make stuff durable and strong :)) Go ahead build one, and nothing is better than the smell of cedar :)

@@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker well he wanted do use teak first which is really expensive. I'm still trying to get my canoe project started but popping my hip out of place really didn't help me. After two weeks and a lot of chiro its almost normal again

Lovely work, table looks wonderful! What thickness were the boards you used for the top, 5/4? I was thinking of using 2x but really like the look of yours! Inspiring to watch, thanks for posting!
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
the outside is 8/4 but the interior planks are just 4/4. It's a nice design, it's exactly the same top construction of my cottage patio table that I did 12 years ago
@scottrobertson3274

@@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker thanks for the reply! Can you remember how much of a reveal you left between the top frame and the interior boards? It seemed like they were set slightly lower? Awesome channel, it’s like listening to GSP teach woodworking!
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
Thank you. They are no reveal, the rabbet is the same depth as the position of the groove in the side 8/4 piece, so when you pass your hand on the top you feel the boards but no height difference. You now I have the plans for this on my website in the plans section. thewoodpecker.net

Nice work. I can't help thinking though, that the table top needs to be thicker - perhaps by a deep edging strip; it feels (looks) a bit out of proportion with the base to me.

Hi Alain, awesome table build. I’m working on a cedar table right now and wondering what kind of finish you would suggest using? Thank you very much.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 2 года назад
If you want a oi finish, in fact it's the finish I love using on cedar it makes the wood pop, I make an equal mix of spar varnish, linseed oil, and a solvent like paint thinner or mineral spirit and apply this on the cedar, this makes a super finish with a decent protection. My foldable cottage cedar table has been finished like that and look as good as the day I brush it on 10 years ago, But it's true it's always inside when we're not there or in winter...

01) How much material did you plane off of the 4x4s? 02) What size mortices did you make and are the tenons available for online purchase? 03) What size BrassScrews did you use?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 3 года назад
1) only enough to remove the round over 2) 14mm and I bought them online at Lee Valley but t hey are available everywhere where they sell Festool supply 3) #8 1" or 1¼" This I'm not 100% sure

Does using rabbets for the top help with movement. Also will all the screws in the top prevent movement too?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker

The screws are only there to prevent the planks from moving, The way is build is like a door, only the rails are glued to the stiles
