It is the opening meet of the UK's newest pack of basset hounds. The Woolaston's country is in Gloucestershire, on the Chepstow side of the River Severn. We have a lovely day's hunting and learn how this pack came about.

I love bassets :-) I have 2 myself and seeing the woolaston pack is like looking back 100 years before all the breeding issues happened :-( Lovely hounds :-)

My dog is half-dachshund and half-basset. I can't believe what a nose she has, and she's only half-basset! I also can't believe how stubborn a basset is (but also sweet and loving).

We had a basset girl several years ago and she was active like these hounds for most of her life until age set in. If they let Pudding off the leash to run a bit with these hounds, I'm sure it wouldn't be long before she was a transformed girl. 👍 ETA -- why the hell is it the business of the government whether people actually hunt rabbits, or hares, with dogs? It's not like they're endangered or that there are huge groups of people who actually hunt for food anymore. Just seems weird to me.

we went to buy a normal basset but we have ended up with a basset with that sort of shape . he was on 500 and he has a very good coat and light brown and white markings

Look up Albany Bassets in the USA. Their bassets are built that way and are bred for hunting.

All I can say that our family Basset Hound was very fast and very athletic operating at a mere 80 pounds and absolutely loved to track and hunt here in Illinois. To those that say they are beagles, they are either misinformed or ignorant....mostly ignorant. Now of course over time there were instances where the stubborn and determined male Basset Hound would fancy a very cute female Beagle and you know......

These are not Bassets, mixed Beagles. Not difficult to import from France pure fit for functionality working Bassets from hare, roe deer, boar hunting origins.

we call these American type Bassets here in the states while the squishy, love puppy types (Pudding) are called Europeans. Are these..Bassets?..considered pure Bassets or are they a hybrid, unrecognized by the kennel club? Are their personalities the same 'ole drole, funny, selective hearing, sweet type that are great with other animals?

Is a young basset a good house mate for a 3-5 yr old placid beagle? And do they make good Lap dogs? i love dogs that come chill out next to me on the on the couch when im watching movies or playing video games.

diviengi No these are what the real hounds are to be like. The ones you see in the Americas can't and won't hunt anything due to false confirmation.

Yes they are, the ears are too short, legs too long, and the bark is too high pitched. If it's one thing that is unique to a hound it's the deep voice

I don't think it's fair to say blair hated rabbits. I've lived in rural gloucestershire all my life, shooting countless rabbits as pest control, and have seen everything from sparrow hawks to stoats, and have never seen a hare.

@@fieldsportstv is there ever a chance to get a puppy from a pack? 🤔 I'm looking to get a working basset to train as an assistance dog for my PTSD. I have background with gundogs and love the eagerness to please that the bassets have and how healthy they look in comparison to the show type 👍

Hi, I have an odd question, as someone who grew up hunting rabbits with beagles and bassetts in the American midwest, do you have to use special sprays to lay down a trail for the bassetts? when training pups we would use the hide of a dead rabbit tied to a string to drag along the ground. (Sometimes we would use a fishing pole to really get the hide into hard to reach places that a rabbit might try to take cover in.) Could you use something like that or would dragging a dead animal hide along the ground be illegal in Britian?

We use a rabbit or hare skin on a string as the lure. The fishing rod is a good idea for training. / Charlie

Theo Amos no bassets have been bred incorrectly the last 100 years. They were athletic dogs. For example the American pitbull is the real bulldog and English bulldog is some inbred dog show crap.

Thanks for this. No - Tony Blair restricted hunting with hounds but didn't ban it. He banned coursing. Under Blair's restrictions, you can hunt deer, hares and mice with a maximum of two hounds. You can use unlimited hounds to hunt rats and rabbits. / Charlie
