@@MWmMorgan , Lorenz Hart was great. And though stylistically, he was utterly different from Porter, so was Johnny Mercer. Porter sent Mercer a telegram in which he told Mercer that Mercer's lyric for "Laura," was the only one which, he, Porter wished he himself had written.
When you listen to Porter, there's no other music. Hearing Cole singing 'You're The Top' as the final tune with this set, indeed, makes you feel like it!
In honour of my very-recently passed grandmother. Cole Porter was her favourite composer , and now I shall carry on this torch ~ absolutely loving him... RIP Nan and TY for everything!!
Here's to your grandmother! It's wonderful she loved Porter. I grew up in Indiana and proud to have shared the state growing up singing Porter and Carmicheal tunes. I grew up near Richmond and Bloomington, both who have deep music and recording history roots.
Loved this music when I was a little girl listening on the radio. My parents had good fun dancing to this music in the roaring twenties which was when I was a four year old.
@@PunkRockZombie205 , in your entire life, you won't have five minutes as spectacularly creative as Cole Porter had on any random day of his songwriting career, which he was embarked upon 100 years ago, or as sensitive and responsive to greatness as Mary had when she was a little girl. Show some respect for people, you worm.
What a guy! He ´s words catch us as our deepest needs and turnings is in life. He can turn all to a good mood with the glittering shine is hes eyes. We love his humour and flow. One of the big genius from his time and still is. He makes us laugh when everyday feels not so special.
OH EM GEE! Gertrude Lawrence singing "The Physician"! Never heard this one before! WHAT a classic! Miss Lawrence was wonderful with the songs of both Porter and his friend, Noel Coward; she was made to sing those comic (and sometimes tragic) tunes. "The Physician" is a classic by one of the great wordsmiths of song (as was, need I say, Noel Coward). Thanks for this terrific set of recordings!
Do you have something out with the songs of the Gershwin brothers? Ira was pretty good with lyrics . . . "Of Thee I Sing," fr'instance . . . a great and neglected satire on American politics.
Gertie: Experiment....make it your motto day and night. Experiment...and it will lead you to the light... The combination of Gertrude Lawrence and Cole Porter was magic.
I thought you might share this with your father in law. He might like hearing one of my favorite composers from Peru, Indiana. Let me know if he likes it with my best regards.

That name is HUGE among Irish Catholics. St. Coleman of Ireland, died around 700 AD. (Coleman O'Brien, Notre Dame quarterback 1966) But you're correct, some are named after the composer too.
Try to find an Oyster in Oyster Bay and you can get them but they are very expensive. The words are true but you had better watch out because you can make children that way.
