Tornadoes kill about 70 people and cause $400 million in damage every year in the U.S., mostly within Tornado Alley - a region in the southern central part of the nation where the majority of the world’s tornadoes occur.
The threats of tornadoes are sudden, in part because we depend on human eyesight to confirm when a tornado has touched ground. But vision isn’t the only way to detect the violent vortices. Sound may be the key.
A team of scientists at the University of Mississippi’s National Center for Physical Acoustics has spent years studying how acoustic sensors can be used to “hear” tornadoes through infrasound.
The technology, originally developed to detect nuclear explosions, could improve the speed and accuracy of tornado warning systems, helping to save lives and give scientists new insights into the conditions that produce the extreme phenomenon.

Director’s note: 4:07 -5:10
“I grew up in Florida with frequent hurricanes. Hurricanes are scary, but you very much know they’re coming. To me, the idea that tornadoes can appear out of nowhere, with no warning, has always been so unfathomable. When Roger told me that his team’s never had a false alarm tracking tornados with this technology, I knew we had to film with them in Mississippi and give this stuff a closer look. When covering scientific research of any kind, it’s rare that you get 100 percent assurance on anything. The team is confident this system works, has seen it working, and is just trying to get it out there for people.”

Such sensors should be mounted on every cell tower for example.

I've had this idea. It is uncanny to see this when in 2019, I was staring at the upside-down stand for a Christmas tree and imagining an array of sensors all across Oklahoma!

Oh. We have known this from the 60s? Thanks. I guess. Now that they are hitting places other than "flyover country" it all of a sudden matters.

All they have to do is get above the cloud that has the funnel and drop a bomb that can detonate right in the funnel or at the top. It needs to be any kind, like a flour bomb but nothing like a nuke of course. It could be a sound or vibration. If sound can drop a wall it could break up a cloud.

This was alway interesting to me.We in Europe do not get these.I never saw one in my life,neither did anyone i know,young or old.How come is this only an American thing?
@MrBrelindm
@MrBrelindm 2 года назад
The topology of the region is unique, unlike any other area on earth. Weather fronts often originate or rapidly intensify along a line from southwest to northeast. It is in these convergence zones (where warm and cold fronts meet) where tornadoes develop and strengthen. The warm gulf of Mexico air, laden with moisture is swept up into these fronts fueling the atmospheric instability that gives rise to tornadoes.
@temistogen
@temistogen 2 года назад
@@MrBrelindm How often are they formed?Are the people used to them?Can they go thru a brick house or just those regular ones in US?Sorry if this is a lot of questions.
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 2 года назад
@@temistogen More common in summer. People that live in "tornado alley" are very accustomed to them. Depending the the strength of the tornado all structures above ground are at risk. Shelter under ground is the safest. Concrete bunker with a well secured thick steel door should work. Brick is not much of a match for them. Wind can drive a board or tree limb straight through.
@SogenOkami

They do occur in Europe, tho much more rare. Typically near the center of Europe laterally speaking, so near Germany or Italy. That said another more common area is Australia, on the north and east portions of the continent.

@@temistogen I am from OK. I knew an electrical engineer that designed homes for a living that told me varying ways of reinforcing buildings. Short of living in a bunker none were 100% full proof. She did say adding hurricane straps in the roof & anchoring the walls to the foundation increased survivability to over 80%. Throwing in an underground storm shelter was even better. I asked about older structures. She said adding in nails or simply changing the angle they are hammered in could help.

I'm extremely skeptical about this. The way it's explained is that they listen to the winds that are conducive to producing a tornado, yet anyone with experience chasing storms will tell you it's extremely fickle. You can have an otherwise perfect set up for a tornado and yet nothing will drop, sometimes for something so simple as a stray wind. Likewise a stray wind can cause the opposite, it's all extremely situational. This is why forecasting these events, even when you're on the ground chasing, can be so difficult. Another thing I'm concerned of is I see a very typical red flag for scams in that they are "bringing back" an idea from the 20th century, which is basically a meme when it comes to scam projects at this point. And then finally, I find it strange there are no links to this project in the video description, or even a mention on where to find the results of this research anywhere in the video.

Living underground is not only expensive and problematic but it could also cause you to be stuck there if a tornado throws debris on top of your structure
@Graeme_Lastname
@Graeme_Lastname 2 года назад
@@7ngel Simplistic. You would still be alive to dig yourself out. And, digging a hole is more expensive than building a sky scraper. You've never spent any time underground have you? Never mind, give it a try one day. No air con required. :)

Some locations it is not an option. Water table is too high, or bed rock is not deep enough.
