Discover the world’s largest organism: Pando, an enormous and ancient quaking aspen, and find out how it became so huge.
--
The largest animal in the world is the blue whale, which weighs a massive 150 metric tons. Even so, it’s not remotely close to being the largest organism by weight. That title goes to an organism so huge that it’s estimated to weigh the equivalent of 40 blue whales. So what is this behemoth? And… where is it? Alex Rosenthal shares the story of the enormous and ancient Pando.
Lesson by Alex Rosenthal, directed by Lisa LaBracio.

Interesting enough, there are a huge variety of ages for Pando, some even younger than the 80,000 years commonly cited. Portions of the Fish Lake Plateau on which Pando grows was glaciated during the last glacial period (it seems the Pando site remained unglaciated), so some estimates place Pando as being as young as 16,000 years old. It would not surprise me if Pando could have survived on the margins of an ice cap, given that Aspen trees have a largely boreal/subarctic/subalpine distribution.

Pando is perhaps the world's heaviest organism but it comes nowhere close to honey mushroom (a fungus found in Oregon) which is in fact the world's largest organism.

Stuff You Should Know did an amazing episode on Pando! You would think an aspen tree forest would be boring but there’s such a crazy amount to learn about it!
