Description:
Byung-Chul Han is telling the stories that need to be told today. Stories about modern technology, about where we are as a society and where we are heading if we don’t change course.
This winter, I dug into five of Byung-Chul Han’s most recent books to discover the definitive philosophy in his work, to discover the world according to Byung-Chul Han. In digging into his writing and philosophical work, I hoped to get some of that feeling of revelation I got from reading Neil Postman and Marshall McLuhan. In many ways, I was not disappointed.
Music from Twin Musicom.

Byung Chul Han is definitely a philosopher we need right now in this world filled with insane values that we adopted and continue to perpetuate. Thanks for creating this beautiful video summarizing his insights.

Yes. Someone that i can reflect with the current society. I like Zizek but i think Byung Chul Han is more familiar with this topic

@@iamleoooo Not too different they are, much of what they aim at (apparently), is, if not the same, very similar; what drives their respective philosophies, the despair and discontent, and the pain of humanity which they perceive in their own ways (of course), is much the same. The divergent aspect is retrospective, not prospective.

I have only just become acquainted with Byung Chul Han, ironically through a Facebook posting of a friend. I wanted to congratulate you on producing such a clear, intelligent, comprehendible, and beautiful presentation of his core ideas. I am spurred on to read more of his work. Thanks.

I was also "searching for a modern author" who would carry the philosophical torch for my generation when I came across Han. It is interesting that whereas previous philosophers seem impenetrably verbose (e.g. Foucault), Han manages to be enigmatic at times without verbiage.

The last sentence really hit me. Very nice video. I have read some of Han's books and I want do proceed in studying him, as I think he helps us taking a different approach towards social media, work, communication with others and many other topics

I cannot express my gratitude to you for making this video. I'm downloading it to my off-line collection of few videos to watch several times, like art pieces. I've fallen completely towards the success and burnout scheme, ultimately within the boundaries of these very social media networks. Its rewards are incredible. But this very moment feels diametrically opposite to when I go and take a walk for hours, freely, with no time boundaries. I'm going to fall apart from the digital world, to reconnect with my friends, society, and my inner self. This has already pushed too far from anything I've ever wished to be. Free technology and money may be some of the most dangerous drugs of this era, because we don't regard them as drugs. Again, thank you very much for this video. There are people out there truly hearing, and looking for an answer

*2 years after* We did it boys. Nowadays, I don't connect nor vibe with technology, and while I keep working hard, it's in an arts work in my pursuit of understanding the world as it is hidden, surrounded by people following the same pursuit. Now I do not care about money, nor tech, but health, relations and arts as a job. You can do it, you can break free from the Panopticon to find your own way as well.

@@jorgesandoval2548thats nice to hear Jorge! I'm looking to do similar to this, I feel wornout of digital which is tricky because I work filming-videos and "suffer" a lot of fomo of equipment abd better-faster computers/tech, it's like I work more just so I can't have better stuff in order to work better you know? Any tips on detaching from consumerism?

I was at my local bookshop yesterday flicking through a book called Saving Beauty by Byung Chul Han... I wanted to search more about the author as I have never before heard about him. That’s how I came across this RU-vid video which I am instantly fallen in love I would definitely be buying some of his books . Thanks a million.

I'm reading his work, "The Disappearance of Rituals", and in it he seems very critical of focusing on authenticity and spoke about it as a form of exhibitionism and production. You mentioned that in the works you read he was talking about making the self a product; I believe this idea also is congruent with this critique of authenticity. Have you read this book of his? He talks a bit about depth of experience, maybe a this obsession with making everything smooth (physically, emotionally, etc.) is tied to the lack of depth of experience? I found the book of his that I read to be extremely countercultural and refreshing. If you have a suggestion for which had the most compelling ideas, I'd be interested to hear it. (I'm not reading him in English so the translation isn't a factor.)

This is a fascinating video -- and ties in also very heavily with Michel Foucault and with Baudrillard's assertion that we are living in a simulacra. Thank you for this video ( your S is coming out too syllabant on my audio -- and it keeps your work from being "perfect" I am not sure if it is my speakers or if maybe you can clean up that tiny criticism with your editing program) I loved the message of this -- it is so important, so current. I have not read him yet but I am definitely going to read him. Koons is a great example -- and a fascinating critique. Really a great vid all around ( fix that S because it is too good not to.) and I appreciate you brilliant critical thinking. Peace. Thank you.

my one disagreement with him is that he uses the terms 'self-love' and 'positivity' in a derogatory way, to name harmful phenomena. i see and experience {in parallel to that insistence on positivity and individualism} a lot of self-hatred and pain & negativity. i need genuine self-love and genuine positivity or hope. so i would not use 'positivity & self-love' derogatively. i'd describe these phenomena of *false* self-love and false positivity in more precise terms - e.g. loneliness, isolation, having a small self, and understanding contentment/joy as this smooth superficial happiness
